WESTPORT.
Saturday morning’s host was severe and
Spoke death to the tomatoes, vines, and all
tender plants. on ' reefs, and other ex-
posed wooden surfaces the frost was fully a
quarter of an inch in thickness, reminding
one of a light all of snow.
Gen. Kilpatrick addressed the democracy
at National Hall, on Friday evening last.
The annual town election resulted as fol-
lows z—Town Clerk, John W. Taylor, his

J. Taylor, James Smibert; Collector, G. G.
Goodrich; Treasurer, E. A. Williams; Reg-
istrar of Births, Marriages and Deaths,John

The tax rate remains as last year,——one
per cent; the collector’s compensation to be
one per cent. V _ _
The Union School System adopted two
years ago, will, by vote, be continued, and
a committee, consisting of G.,S. Adams, T.
R. Lees, E. J. Taylor, James Smibert, and
Alva Gray, was appointed to inquire into
the expediency of establishing a Graded
School. , The Union School District Com-
mittee is composed of meu,wc make one ex-
ception,in no special way calculated to fulfill
the duties thereof, and who, we learn, did
not desire the appointment, but who were
chosen for party’s sake, and for the sake of
venting spite against one, whose record in
letters entitles him to favorable considera-
tion. ,
Mr. H. R. Treadwell arrived home from
Europe last Wednesday. He looks hale
an d hearty. '
Timber for the new draw arrived on
Thursday, per sloop Escort from Bridgeport.
The work of demolishing the old draw goes
forward, and in about two weeks the new
structure Will be ready for the public. Four

The election on Monday was one of the
closest knotvn in New Canaan for years,
both parties carrying 011' some trophies of
victory. Both parties nominated the same
candidate for first selcctmau, and of course
he was elected. For second selectman, B.
D. Purdy, dem., had a majority of 3. For
third selectman Samuel K. Lockwood hada
majority of 5. The republican. candidate
for town clerk was elected by a majority of
33. The republican candidate for treasurer
had a majority of 5. The ticket elected is

ish its Scht 01 districts and adopt the union
system. The following School committie

work.
‘On Thursday, a horse belonging to Messrs
Hubbell & Wakeman, of Saugatuck took
fright at dogs fighting near his heels. started
off at a rapid rate with a wagon load of
coal to which he was attached, ran towards
Westport, and when near Mr. Head’s resig'
deuce, collided with ahitching post, demol-
ishing the vehicle, demoralizing the driver,
and/stunning the-horse. The harness has
been sent to the repairer. ,
More than 1,000 persons, a large 'share of,
them ladies, attended E. P. Smith’s land sale,
at Point Imperial, last Tuesday. The re-
gatta, tub race, music, and collation were
fine, the weather splendid, and the sales of
' lots satisfactory; . . I
On Saturday, Oct. 5th, water was let into
the trout ponds, Poplar Plains, at 12 m. In
less than 30_ hours afterwards, the lower
pond was full and running over. All doubts
as to the success of the scheme are now at
an end. - -
Mr. F. W. Fellowes of this place, who has
been spending some time in Europe with
his family, arrived in New York on the Sth.
At. the end of thirty days he will return.
One of the bridges above'Kelley’s Mill, on
the road to "Weston, gave way under the
weight of an OX team and load of coal, last
week Wednesday. Mr. Fred Coley was
driving, and had difficulty in cxtricating his
establishment. The bridge will be al.0nce
repaired. ~
On Saturday a young man by the name of
Pendar, working for Mr. HOrace Staples,had
the first finger of his right hand lacerated in
a fanning mill. ‘
Persons driving horses with carriages, '
will be glad to learn that; Mr. Martin Grace
has completed his contract on the road from
Saugatuek to Norwalk.
The Supreme court Of errors heard the
arguments pro and con, on the Saugatuck
Bridge caselast Thursday, and tax payers
are waiting to hear the decision.

Jacob Hess, a German in the employ of
Albert Wood of Bedding, while exploding a
blast in Smith’s lime kiln on Tuesday, acci-
dentally threw a lighted fuse in a pan cou-
tainiug about two pounds of powder which
exploded, burning him quite severely about
the lace, neck and arms.
George W. Hamilton met with a serious
accident on Monday evening. In descend-
ing a hill with his team on the way home
from the village, a part of the harness broke,
allowing the wagon to strike the horse, and
starting it into a run. Mr. Hamilton was
thrown violently into the road, and severely
bruised about the body. ‘
Nathan Benedict, while driving between
Danbury and Brewstef's, was ,thrown {rem
his wagon. and quite seriously injured.
The Wooster House Drawing still con-
tinues, and the $2 prizes are not all drawn
yet. The committee promise to finish up on
Friday, When the large cash prizes and the
Hotel will be drawn.
Mrs. Balmforth is to erect a mansard roof
house, for herself, en Balmforth Avenue.

The Shepaug Excursion.
About-a week since your correspondent
received a ticket from Supt. Greig for a
Stockholders’ Excursion to N orwalk on the
9th of October. 4
The morning'was a perfect one and any
doubts as to the success of the trip were dis-
pelled as we drove up to the station. The
platforms were jammed with people and the
grounds filled with’carriages. Two trains
were sent off—the regular train taking five
the
same number. In the excursion train Presi-
dent Perkins informed us there were 299
people and the. eslimated number of the
whole was about 000.
At every station the people were out in
crowds and the train stopped at several
road crossings to take on passengers. The
trip down was made without accident or
delay of any kind. The beautiful valley
was gorgeously dressed Ill yellow, red and
green. Everybody was noisy and happy.
Mr. Greig was everywhere at once, .und
President Perkins exerted himself in his
usual successful manner to make people
enjoy themselves. The run over the exten-
sion was made at the rate of 40 miles an
hour and we reached Norwalk Bridge at
about 11:30. Then the train divided—the

Antonio Munoz, employed on the brig S. P.
Smith, Capt. Dodge, was adjusting the rig-
ging, he fell a distance of about twenty-five
feet and struck on the rail of the vessel.
His head was thrown against the deck ”with
great force, producing concussion ot the
brain. Nothing could be done to save the
life of the unfortunate youth, and after
lingering until afternoon he died. He
was of Spanish birth, aged about sixteen
years, and had been for some time in the
service of Capt. Dodge, by whom he was
much respected. ,
At a recent meeting of the Common Coun-
cil a vote was passed to borrow $30,000 for
the use of the city. At the meeting last
evening another vote was passed to borrow
$40,000 more, making $70,000 thus far.
Mr. George F. Tracy, 3. Well known and
highly esteemed citizen of Bridgeport, and
late Postmaster, died on Monday afternoon,
at five o’clock. after a long and distressing
illness Of several months. _
Joseph Reed, assistant engineer of the
fire department, was badly injured Saturday
week. While engaged in sawing timber a
heavy piece was thrown against his face
- with great force breaking his jaw and
knocking several teeth down his throat
The amount paid Into the bands of the
Fairfield County Commissioners for licenses
up to Wednesday, was $21,000. Of this
amount $16,400 comes from Bridgeport,
$4,000 from Norwalk, $900 from Newtown,
$100 from New Canaan, and $200 from
Stamford. ‘
About5 o’clock Wednesday morning fire
broke out in the printing office of Mr. Wm.
H. May, 21 Wall st. It started under the
stairway leading to the attic and soon
spread through the room and attic, and
thence to the roof There being danger of
its passing to adjoining buildings the tin
was stripped from the roof, floods of water
were POP-WEI on, and the progress of the fire
was soon arrested. , , .
Thlll'SdSY evening about ten o’clock Mr.
Geo. Mayne noticed that; smoke was issuing
from the cellar under his drug store, No. 29
Stale street, and upon going below it was
found that a fire was In progress near the
centre of the cellar, which was then already
filled with smoke. . A stream of carbonic
acid gas was itnmedtaielythrown from the
-soda fountain upon the fire and it was in-
stantly extinguished. An investigation dis-
closed the fact that uaptha had been poured
upon the straw between a lot of empty
boxes and a number of barrels of liquor and
then set ongfirc. The stump of a. burnt
match was found close by.——Stamlard.

against the republicans for the first time in

The Chicago Tribune (Greeley) says one
instructive fact of the campaign, as demon-
strated by the recent elections,»is “ that a

set the liberal republican vote in each of the

We visited Tyron'hili, from wfiose top
Gov. Tryouwatehed the burninv .of the
Town in Revolutionary times. This hill
is situated on the premises of Mr. J. AHoyt
and is as revular as a sugar loaf.
The Fire lDepartment were out on their
Annual Parade and many of our excursion-
ists watched the “steamer” with evident de-
light. A visit to the Reservoir and a drive
through South N orwalk Were among en-
joyable things of the day. -
The return trains left at 4 and 6:17 o’clock.
The four o'clock train was delayed ' and
came in only ten minutes ahead of the regu-
lar. We arrived home at 9:30 without an
accident or mishap. Their was one univer-
sal expression ot‘gratitudc toward the people.

had a better time than anyoneelse.
We desire to’ express our thanks to Mr.
Gould Hoyt and Mr. Trubec, for kind at-

ward the S. V. R. R. has been increased by
this trip and the officers of the road may
congratulate themselves on the successful

Trust Funds. It is only when a-Rallroad is earning,
net, an excess of its interest obligations, with a cer-
tainty of steady . growth, that its Bonds can be said

The Chicano, DANVILLl-AND VINOINNIB RAILIOAD
is doing this, and has this certainty. That part of
it known as the Inuxors DIvIson (from Chicago to
Dunville. 135 miles.) was finished last year, and its
gross earnings have increased from $34,409.07, in De-
cember, 1871, to 857, 657.95 in August, 1872.
The net earulngs for August were $30,412.“, or at
the rate of $304,959.52 per unnum. The total interest
liabilitynpon the total issue of bonds upon both the
Illinois and Indians division: is $230,000 gold. The
lllln'ols division is, therefore, earning, not, more than
enough to pay interest uponthe entire bonded debt
upon the whole road. , '

is about eighty miles in length, traversing extensive
Bituminous coal fields, and making '1 direct (and the

part of it is now in operation, and the entire division

A first mortgage upon such a road, at the rate of
815,500 per mile, is a safe ”investment. and know
of no other railroad bond, at the price ed ‘for

We have sold nearly two' millions of these bonds
to savingsbunks, trust companies and the most care.-
They are for $1,000 each, and have forty years to
