BRIDGEPORT.
Our city was visited Monda evening
week by another destructive con agration,
destroying an immense amount cf property.
The extensive lumber ard of S. C. Nicker-
son it Son, located on nowlton street, East
Bridgeport, was destroyed by fire. The fire
wasseen burning in three distinct places at
the commencmeut, and is supposed ,to have
been the work of an incendiary. The plan.
ing mill, in which the fire first started, was
located near the center of the yard, and on
different sides of this were’ sheds, piles- of
lumber, two dwelling houses, car enter’s
shop barn, paint-shop, doc. Over a 1. these
the flames swept with a fury that defied the
utmost efforts of the firemen to arrest them.
About-ten buildings were destroyed. Th
brick fire-proof building standing on th
east'side of the street,‘belonging to Messrs.
8.0. Nickerson do Son, containing their oili-
ces,.books and papers, was saved ‘by the
most heroic efforts of the firemen, the upper
stor only being destroyed. -Had this build-
ing alien, there seems to have been nothing
to prevent the fire leapin from one wooden
Ibuildin to another, unti .it swept the cor-
ner to . illiam street, and soon north‘to
the large carriage factory of the Messrs.
Hall Brothers. on the corner of East Wash-'
iugton avenue. ' For along time it was fear-
an that this would bethc result, but by erect:
ing a barricade of timber the firemen were
able to stand against the fire and hurl solid
streams of;wnter into the upper story of the
office building until the flames were con-
quered and the march of the fire-king in that
direction was sta ed. 'The whole of the
works of Messrs. . C. NickersOn do Son are
“destroyed, and all their lumber, excepting a
few thousand feet piled in a remote corner
of the yard and such as was thrown off the
dock into the harbor. Their— loss is estima-
ted to be about $50,000, and is. only partially
covered by insurance. Other sufferers by
the fire are :. Morehouse and Manwaring,
builders, who lose about $1,000 in stock, in
yard, and some $150 in their shop—the lat-
ter is covered b insurance, none on the for-
niel'; Ring & hillips,‘ builders. loss $900,
insurance—$500; Foster ck Longstati, stair
builders, loss $200; -:Wheeler do Howes,
$2,500. insured; Joseph Hotchkiss, machin-
inst, $2,000. In addition to these is the loss
of tools by the different workmen, and in
many cases this loss falls hard on the men.
About sixty men» were employed in and
about the yard and mill, man of them
owning valuable chests of tools a of which
were destroyed—Standard.
