At the Greeley and Brown club meeting,
held last Wednesday evening, Mr. Joseph
W. W'ilson was elected President, and Mr.
Edward Merrill, Secretary. ,
Rev. B. B. Snowden, recently of Califori
bio. and Sandwich Islands, will occupy the
pulpit of the first Congregational Church of
Norwalk, on Sunday, next, Sept 1st.
Mr. David E. Disbrow: and wife, Henry
W. Lester and wife, and Miss P. H. Bundert,
of South Norwalk, were registered last week
at the Ocean House, Edgartown, Martha’s
Vineyard.
The election in West Virginia, last week,
resulted in the disastrous defeat of the regu-
lar democratic ticket, the independent party
electing their ticket by probably more than
five thousand majority.
Now iliat water is fairly introduced
through our Borough streets we would
urge upon our authorities to erect at suita-
ble places, several drinking fountains, for
Horses and cattle. They are very much
at cded and should be erected immediately.
Mr. Byington’s party left New Brunswick
last week, and are new spending a few days
at Mooschead 'Lakc, aiid will visit other
points of interest in Maine. During his
stay in the Provinces, Mr. B. made a trip to
Prince Edward’s Island, returning through
Nova Scotia, experiencing much cold weath-
er. The party will probably reach home
about the first of September.
A “war of words” is raging fiercely Down
Town, in regard to school matters. A meet-
ing was called for last Thursday evening,
but the voters arrived only to find the school
house closed, the committee stating that
owing to an informality the meeting, if held.
would be illegal. The voters insisting, the
house was finally . opened, and the meeting
called to order. After the statement by the
committee the meeting adjourned sine die.
Another meeting has been called, to be held
next Thursday evening, at which we earnest-
ly hope that wise counsel' will prevail, and
harinrny be restored. ‘
It is now stated that Charles Francis
Adams not only refuses to accept a nomina-
tion from the Greeley party as Governor of
Massachusetts, butis actually iii favor of
Pres. Grant’s re-clection. Chas. Francis
Adams,Jr., and John Adams are also out
for Grant.
Mr. Greeley attended a printers pic nic at
Jones’ Wood, N. Y., last~Saturday, making
an clectioneering speech on “labor.” He
seems to labor more in trying to catch notes
(reform 2’) than he used to do as editor of a
campaign paper.

GEORGETOWN.
Excursion parties to Roton Point and nu-
merous other places along the shore, are frc
quent, and excite little attention. All being
intended for pleasure they but complete the
object for which they are projected. But
several of our young men, being desirous
for recreation more than pleasure, conceived
the plan of a three days’ excursion to one
of the islands in Norwalk harbor. Tues-
day, the 20th of August was the appointed
time, and the party to number eight mem-
bers, all of whom were enthusiastic in the-r
undertaking. So when Tuesday arrived
they were promptly on hand to embark on
the mornrng train, with faces expressive and
full of great expectation. A sail and a row
boat were procured in Norwalk, and the
party started on a search expedition to hunt
up some island suitable for an encampment.

FAIRFIELD
WESTPORT.
,A tornado, accompanied with lightning,
thunder and rain, visited this town and
vicinity on Thursday afternoon last. In its
effects it was more terrible than any expe-
rienced since 1826,if we can rely on- the
statements of those whose memories extend
back to that period. Astroll through the
streets and fields of the surrounding country
will amply demonstrate the assertion. This
storm was the culminating point on which
the back bone of one of the hottest summer’s
was broken,and the comfortable coolness
secured to us since, furnishes a relief which
all have long hoped to experience. The

After such an expenditure of force, people
naturally thought the end reached, and
settled themselves down to that belief, rc-
solvcd to put up with any little rise that
might be indicated by the thermometer.
The state of things on Monday, Tuesday and
chdnesday following proved that they had
been too credulous. and on Thursday, which,
though it opened gloriously, yet developed
into one of the most serious scorchers of the
season. To keep cool was an impossibility,
and an appeal to the breezes was hurled
back in mockery with invitations to ply
more vigorously fans or band-anus. Early
in the afternoon of this day,the sun sending
out its hot rays, a small bank of clouds at
the same time visible in the west, were the '
first sounds of distant thunder heard. The
attentive listener could observe that they
were very distant. Later,a stillness and
calm, truly said to precede a storm, were
noticeable. For three and a half hours
these sounds continued, approaching nearer
and nearer, when, at about half past five
o’clock, the storm in all its fury burst upon -
us. The very flood gates of heaven seemed
to be open, and the waters of a. second
deluge let loose. Terrific flashes of light-
ning were Qincessant, and bolts struck fre-
quently doing damage. In company with
it all came a mighty wind, unequalled as to
power and by devastating effects. It lasted
about thirty minutes, sweeping a region
eight or nine miles long, three and a half
miles wide, commencing in Wilton and rush-
ing down between this town and Norwalk.
North and east of Westport scarcely any
damage, was done. The number of trees
absolutely uprooted in this vicinity will
reach three hundred, and the fruit pelted
from the stems cannot be measured. As to
trees with broken branches, every door
yard in town tells its tale. At Saugatuck,
near. the depot, the storm king seemed to
take his chosep ground. Mr. Jesse Bradley
suffered the loss of a chimney, which in fall-
ing stove in his tin roof and broke the
rafters. Mr. Frank Raymond is now on-
. gaged in plumbing up out buildings which
had been forced to make sundry summersets
during the gale. Fields of corn are, many
of them, flattened and tangled. Fields of
sowed corn l'ook as if great rollers had pass
ed over them. The rain was prodigibus and
