The Washington Post plaéc has been pur-
chased by a French gentleman, Mr. John J.
Charrarnund, of Brooklyn. We understand
that he contemplates making extensive im-

WESTPORT.
On Saturday last, Capt. Budd, of,Green’s
Farms, was driving a very spirited horse at
Saugatuck. The horse took a notion to
turn suddenly about, upsetting the carriage
and throwing the captain to the ground. He
sustaineda bruise or two but was not se-
riously hurt. , ' ,
The yield of cherries this year is heavy,
and the quality of fruit fine. Strawberries
are dwindling, and will last but a day or
two longer.
A town meeting is called for Saul-day,
July 6th,.to take action looking to the re-
scinding of a vote appointing James Smi-
bert, Esq, agent for the town of Westport
in the case of the Sapgatuck Bridge Co.
against the town, and to direct the Select-
men to pay the judgment and costs in the
case. -
The Neptune Quartette gave an entertain-
ment at National Hall, on Thursday even-
ing last. The performance was excellent,
and deserved a larger patronage than it re-
ceived. An earlier advertisement would
have secured a better result. Notwithstand-
ing the drawback, the club went through
their programme and were heartily encored
at the close of 'a number. They thus
published a splendid advertisement for
themselves, and we believe they need have
no fear to visit us a second time. Messrs.
Spinning and Burlock of Bridgeport; Mr.
D. Disbrow of Norwalk, and Mr. Arthur
Sherwood, of Westport, form the personnel
of the club. All have good voices, and are
fast winning favor of the public as first-class .
,vocalisits. '
_ One of the prettiest home views to be
found in town, is that from the front veran-
dab of Mr. J. E. Wheeler's residence at
. Saugatuck. The verandah is, we should
judge, 20 feet above the river, and 80 feet
distant from it, with a roadway passing be-
tween. The eye catches a view of the water
far above and below. One inclined to take
comfort with a good cigar, could not but
say—perfect, on beholding it: '

There is authority for saying that certain
ofour wealthier citizens are in fayor of con.
tributing liberally towards the purchase of
a steam fire engine for Westport. Frequent
destructive fires, of late, have made it evi-
dent that “Old Compo,” although she has a
good record, is yet inadequate on many oc-
casions, and a. Steamer alone is the institu-
tion .wanted. We feel sure that wrth a
Steamer, the boys would take renewed in.
terest, and do such good‘work, as would
amply repay investment“ Let us have a
Steamer.

“Fourth” when it comes, and we know. you
all expect to do so, don’t stay up through
the previous night, carousing through
the streets, ringing-the Church bells, dis-
charging fire-arms etc., thus wearying your-

away to your hearts content_and take pleas-
ure in it.

We feel sure its members will make 'a good
record for themselves.
Gentlemen of Norwalk! Co.’ X, of the
“ Squcduuk Brigade,” don’t promise posi-
tively to join you on Thursday, but'you need
not feel surprised if some 60 or 70 of the
oddest looking chaps you ever laid eyes on
appear in your, streets on that day, armed
with the implements of glorification. We
have a number of costume “killers," here,
who by practice in the past are qualified to
perform that noble part which true fantastics
aspire to. They are “stunners” of high de—
gree, but their coming depends somewhat
on “Old- Prob,” and the' condition of the
thermometer.
Mr. Lewis Chase, of the U. S. surveying
party now in our harbor, was§fiued $5 and
costs on Monday, the 24th ult., for maraud
ing in the streets during the previous Satur.

Mr. George Washington Hall and Silas B.
Bixbcc, charged with disposing of Goose
Island fish guano without authority from the
owner, were tried before Justice Goodsell on
Tuesday last. They 'were bound over for
trial at the next term of the Superior Court-
Bixbec procured bail but Hall didn’t and
went to Brflgeport.
Mr. George G. Goodrich, as is seen in fre-
quent promptness in the discharge of his
duties, is the most etilcieiit officer Westport
has had for several years. The pluck and
energy displayed in the cases of Cook, who
broke into Co'uch’s house, Chase and Hall,"
corroborate the statement, and will by and
by bring well merited reward. _ -
Dr. Birdsall, superintendent for a term 0,
years, of the U. S. Mint, at San Francisco,
was the guest of Mr. John M. Pinkney on
Thursday last.
Lots of New Yorkers in town to keep the
Fourth. '
Sunday was a scorcher, but large congre-
gations attended the churches. .
The bi-monthly concert of the M. E,
church Sunday-school took place last Sun-
day afternoon. Rev. Mr. Hough, pastor, con-
ducted the services. A; large number of
children were present. ‘ Singing and recita-
‘ tions comprised the exercises. It was shown
that the pupils had been well taught. Par-

Gen. Tom Thumb sports a mustache and
Chill whiskers, and has grown perceptibly
older during his three years’ tour abroad.
A factory for the manufacture of the“Com-
mon Sense Fruit Jar” will be erected in
Bridgeport the coming fall. , .
About four o’clock Sunday aflernoon’
three men, belonging in N orwalk. went
dashing down Pembroke street, East Bridge-
port, ma carriage, and turning the corner
into Stratford avenue too rapidly, the wheels .
were crushed and the men thrown headlong
into the street. When strangers come to
Bridgeport on Sunday to have a “bender”
they should be a little more careful how
they turn corners, and especially so if they
are a trifle boozy, or a good deal drunk.
Rev. A. N. Benedict, of this city,
elected Most Worthy Chaplain of the
National Division Sons of Temperance, at
the session, held last week, in Chicago.
Politeness pays. One of our citizens says
that by courteously furnishing a camp stool

A fire broke out in Bridgeport about nin
o’clock Friday morning in the upper story
of a wooden house near the railroad crossing
on Main strccf. The employees of the Nau-
gatuck shop near by gathered on the scene,
and through their exertions the fire was
quenched by throwing on pails of water.

Mr. Watson, one of the contractors at
Wheeler & Wilson‘s, squared the ends of
his fingers, Friday, with a buzz-saw. That
'is, he sawed two of them off, and “hacked”
the other two on the same hand badly.
A mad do ran down the main street of
Bridgeport hursday evening, and while
going very fast 'umped through a plate
glass window of orthrop’s store, and being
attacked, escaped, and ran round the block
twice. Finally a large crowd collected, and
he was dispatched with clubs;-,and stones.
He hit one man in the heel.
Commodore Nutt'and brother, General
Tom Thumb and several members of his
traveling troupe were the guests of Mr.
Barnum Friday at Waldemere. The en:
tire Tom Thumb party consisting of Gen;
eral Tom Thumb and his wife, Commodore
Nutt, Minnie Warren and retinue, making
in all thirteen personsrand a- pair of ponies
and carriage 'haye been absent from the
country three years, and have completed a
voyage around the world. They went over-
land to California, thence to Japan, China,
Australia, the East Indies, returning via.
Ewypt, the Continent and Great Britain.
We learn from their agent that they have
traveled 55,000 miles, (33,000 by sea) given
1,411 entertainments in 578 different cities
and towns in all climates of the world
without losing a single day or missing a
single performance ‘through illness or ac-
cident. The little‘ General has long since,
accumulated a' fortune and has just com-
pleted a fine residence at Middlcboro, Mass,
the birth place of his wife. '
A little girl about seven years of age,
named Jennie B. Ingersoll, was frightfully
burned about ten o’clock Wednesday morn-
ing. During the absence of her mother from
the room she took a can, containing two
quarts of kerosene oil, and began to. pour
the fluid on the fire for the purpose of kind-
ling it. The oil took fire, and the can ex-
ploded, covering the child' with a sheet of
flame from head to foot. The clothing was
all burned off the poor child and her body
and limbs presented a shocking appearance.
The case is sad in the extreme, and furnishes
another painful illustration of the danger of
using such- an inflammable substance as
kerosene oil in the kindling of fires. The

The Society awarded their first premium to
the Buckeye Mower. The hay crop in.
Southern Jersey has suffered from the dry,
cold Spring, but the late rainshavc greatly
improved the prospects which now gives

rowed on Friday, on Saltonstall Lake. The
academic department crew came in first,
leading the junior class crew by four and a
half .seconds. The scientific department
crew were third and the freshmen last.

ively. The course is a trifle over three
miles. The sophomore crew did not get
their boat in time, and so did not take part

Scientific School will occur July 8th. Pre-
