NEW CANAAN.
A party offriends, with the Rev. Mr. Des
Brisay, of New‘Canaan, will be entertained"
by Mr. H. W. Longfellow onTuesday morn-
ing, June 24th. In the afternoon, at three
o’clock, they will attend the Peace~ Jubilee,
seats having been reserved for them in ad-
vance. When poet meets poet, then comes

attending the Presbyterian festival at Fitch’s
Hall. I would suggest, however, should
they conclude to' paint another horse with:
out consulting the owner as to color, that
BLUE is not generally considered a favorable
one for either man or horse.

WESTPORT.
At about half-past eight o’clock, Sunday
morning, a fire broke out in a small building
on the premises of Mr. S. H. Alden near the
new and elegant barn and stables now going
up in place of those recently burned. It
Was nearly time for the first balls of churches
, to ring when the alarm was given, and al-
though each bell pealed forth in response,
many thought it was a mistake on the part of
, the Sextons, soon however, a dense volume
of smoke from the locality named told the
true story and the cause. Instan‘tly the fire
company with .“Qld Compo," which, though
much abused of late, is yet good in cases of
emergency, proceeded to. the scene. The
fire had now made 'great headway and got
into the Hen-house and Wood-house where
were piled 20 cords of wood—very dry and
combustible. Water was taken from an im-
m‘ense cistern at the rear of Mr. A’s house. ~
Two Streams'were at once thrOwn upon the
flames, there being plenty of helpers at the
brakes,——ministers, lawyers, doctors and
merchants forming the number. It seemed
as it all Westpbrt was on_hand to render
aid. The cord wood now got on fire in
earnest and all the firemen could do was to
confine the flames to it and keep it from the .
barn, which smoked under the great heat,‘
- Like the rushing of a mighty tempest the
flames spread taking in their course the Gas
‘ House, Carriage House, Horse shed and
other structures‘clow by,magnificent Arbor
Vitaes, the growth of 12 years, and 30 feet
high burst into pillars of living flames: the 2
foliage of Elms, Sycamores, Maples and '
others wilting and changing to a crisp in
an instant, paining the heart of the proprie- .
tor who looked on amazed, yet powerless to
arrest. The trees of Mr. Alden’s place form
One of its ‘most' beautiful features. At this
juncture‘one of theEnginc’s suction pipes
gave way, fell into the cistern and sunk. It
took twenty minutes to force a hole through
the ground into another. cistern nearer the
fire. Meantime the flames shot up with re-

: newed fury, carrying heat that .almost took

The Neptune Yacht Club Quartette are to

The Rev. C. T. Coer, of Biughampton,
New York, who formerly resided in this
city and assisted in the service at St. John's,
has received and accepted a call to the rec-
torship of a church in Morristew York.
Illinois -hay is brought to Bridgeport by
the car load, and sold for $35 per'ton:
About $12,000 were realized by the
auction sale of building lots belonging to
Charles Hough,-Esq.
A small company of entlemen went on a
trial trip of the Thyra, hursday afternoon,
down the Sound asiar as Norwalk. This
steamer is propelled by the new Fowler
wheel which for a year or two past has at-
tracted large attention from those interested
in the propelling power of steamboats. The
Thyra is 110 feet by 22%, with an engine 35

' , by 22 inches, deSIgned to give 130 horse
power. The wheel is eight feet in diameter
and has six blades or paddles, four feet long
by 16% inches at the. top and 14 at the bot-_
tom. Her hull was built by Baylies do Son,
Port Jed‘erson 1 the engines b the N orwalk
Iron Works ; the boiler by ames Watson,
Bridgeport, and the condenser by John A.
Lighthall, of New York. She was built un-
der the superintendence of Capt. O. K. Bern-
haum who is to command her, and is owned
by Wm. F. Moore, of Santa Croix, andis de-
signed to run between the Danish West
India Islands, to carry freight, passengers,
mails, &c. . ‘ .
A worthy Brid eporter, who happened to
be in Boston Wednesday evening, was
arrested by some of the “Hub” detectives on
suspicion of beingcngagcd in the murder of
Captain Colvocorcsses. After submitting to
a search of his person and traveling-satchel,
and a detention of halt an hour, more or less,
he was discharged. ,
The Howe band is soon to be re-enforced
by two. first-class musicians. Mr. W.‘ C.‘
Sperry, 1st E flat comet player with Gil-
more’s band, Boston, has been engaged as.
leader, and will remove to Bridgeport about
July 1. ‘The services of Mr. Frank Fuller,
bass, have also been engaged. With the ad-
ditions to be made, the band will number
twenty-one pieces, and a drum major, and
may be counted upon as one of the best in
the State—Standard.

The eleventh regiment of Maine has invi-
ted the Connecticut tenth regiment to join
in a reunion on the 26th inst.

vention. Truly that is a fair and festive
town. They are going to celebrate the

Among other attractions we notice an ex-

double fare on the New York and New
Haven railroad: Scarcely a day passes but
somebody is put oif fromu train on the New

ing full fare through from the second

the Borough of N orwalk. duly held at the allies
of said Court, in said Borough,on the 4th do of June,
1872, the following, votes were passed and lrected to
be published as herein stated:
Vowd, That the 1st day of November. 1872, be fixed
by this Court as the time when the several sums re-
spectively assessed by this Court, by vote of May 28,
1872, upon the property and property-holders in the
matter of the construction ot sewer in West Avenue
and connecting sewers in Wall and Chapel Streets
and Mott Avenue, shall become and be due and pay-
able to the Borough Treasurer. ’
Voted. That the Borough Attorney be and is hereby
directed to file. within the time required bylaw, liens
on the propert assessed of all persons who shall
neglect to pay y the time herein limited, viz., No-
vember 1, 1872, the assessment on their progeny h
the matter of said sewer assessment, made y vote
of May 28 1878,tmd that said attorney make collec-
tion of said assessments in the manner provided by
the Boron 11 Charter.
