We have here a nice instance of the gross
tyranny often exercised by Medical Asso-
ciations. In Louisville, Ky., the doctors
charged $5 for examining any applicant for
, an insurance policy, The ofllces thought
that the Med. Facs. could afford to do it for
$3. The College of Physicians and Sur.
geons passed an edict that none of its meni-
, bets shouldIdo such work for less than 85.
Dr. A. B. Cook, a member as aforesaid, hav-
ing an eye to business and being willing to
work at reasonable rates, continued to
charge the ridiculously small sum of S3 for
his examinations. Of course the C. of P. and
S. instantly expelled Bro: Cook, who from.
that moment became, of course,a quack, u‘
charlatan, an empiric, and an irregular
practitidner.‘ This Dr. Cook could by no
means- stand; and he has sought redress
in the Common Pleas Court. He wants to
be reinstated in full communion; from
which we infer that it must be a perfectly
awful thing to he turned out Of a Medical

For his success, as well as for a famous cor-

tion of the‘city, and betweenIit and the iron .
clad ships of the Spaniard. Pinzon saw the '
awkwardness of the situation and in a char-e
acteristically arrogant note informed him
that he had better move his corvette, as he ,
intended to bombard the place and would-
not be answerable for any damages that
might result. This roused the ire of the
Greek, and he hastened to,inform the Span.
ish Admiral, in language that was model Of
explicitness and force, that the St. Mary's
was anchored to his perfect satisfaction, and
would remain where she was, and added
further :

“In the event of a bombardment of the
city, I beg you, Sir, to have a care that none
of your shot touch the hull of the St. Mary’s.
I am perfectly aware of the weaknes of my
corvette. in comparison with the‘powerful
squadron of her most Catholic Majesty now
blockading the port, but I beg, Sir, to remind
you that the flag that floats at her peak
represents 3,000 guns on the sea.” -

The correspondence was printed in the
Spanish papers, and besides creating the

greatest enthusiasm for the plucky Captain,
openbd the eyes of the Chilenos .to the ire-
mendous eli'ective service of the American
navy at that time. But his action subse-
quently caused him no'little inconvenience,
fer whenever he showed himself (on shore
he found himself immediately surrounded

 

by a crowd of enthusiastic citizens, who at- 5

tributed the immunity 'of their city for a
long time afterward to his refusal, and who
made the hills ring with their vivae for the
“brave American.”

new issued, the price being $1,145 in gold,
and the running time 81 days. The line of
route,'going westward, is from New York
to San Francisco, say 3,000 miles; San
Francisco to Yokohama, 4,700 thence to
Hong Kong, 1,600 miles, thence to Calcutta,
3,500 miles, thence to Bombay, 1,400 miles,
Bombay to Suez, 3,000 miles, from Suez
by the way of Alexandria and Brindisi to
London, say 2,300 miles, and horn London
to New York, 3,200 miles. When the pro-
jected improvements of the Indian rout
are carried into efi‘ect across Europe, and a
great continental railroad is established with
proper branches and connections through
Asia, the trip around the world will be,
shorterin duration and space, and at the

same time much more interesting.

The Sunday-School Il'mcc of April 8th,
copied from The Presbyterian, an item re-
~rpecting a minister in South Carolina, who
has accepted a commission from the Ameri-
cin Sunday-School Union, to organize Sun-
day-schools in his native State. A recent
Iietter. from him reports thus:
‘7 “The first Sunday that one of my mission
schools held its session, a little boy was
discovered'outside the door peeping slyly
through the crack. The superintendent
rsent out and tried to induce the little wild
:.:.-iu to come in. After much coaxing. he
altered the room, but insisted on sitting
.imvn near the door'whence he could run
away it'he wished to—which he soon did.
“The next Sunday, however, the whole
schoolwere surprised to see him march
boldlyI in, with his three little sisters, and

but without hats or shoes. ‘
“The next Sunday he returned with his
three little sisters, and brought also his
grandmother, who was sixty years old.

President Porter, Rev. E. D. Saunders, the

naturalist, whose stud of bee culture has
