Jere. Johnson, Jr’s. 'sale of real estate
owned by Mr. M. E. Mead, of Daricn, came
off as announced, notwithstanding the un-
favorable weather, on the 23d. It was large-
ly attended by- many of-the residents in the
cities and tOwns on the line of the N. Y. &
N. H. R. R., andhad it not been for the fre-
quent and severe showers the occasion
would have proved one of unalloyed pleas-
ure. Although many were deterred from
coming by the threatening aSpect of the
skies, the sale commenced a little ailer
eleven, with some spirited bidding on the
property near the depot. At twelve the
company were invited to partake of an ele-
gant and bountiful repast spread for the
occasion under the large tent belonging to
the County Agricultural Society, and dur-
ing the shower that'followed they were very
agreeably entertained with impromptu songs
' and a violin performance by‘ Mr. Harrison,
elicitingshouts of laughter. ' The sale was
resumed as 'soon as possible, the crowd,
headed by .Grati'ula’s band discoursing
sweet music, walking in procession from
one locality to auctberuntil a terrific thun-
der storm suddenlyIput a stop to proceed-
ings and caused every body to rush for the
depot iIOr'slielter. The sale was according-
ly adjourned to June 8th, when attractions
of similar character will be presented, and
it is hoped the weather may prove propiti-
ous.

We learn that the work of rebuilding the
village draw is to be commenced at once.

pied the pulpit of Christ Church on Sunday

For some time-past, Mr. E. H. Nash has
been excavating in the bank rear of the
barn south of his house, with a view to
throw that structure some sixty or seventy
fect‘back from the road, as it has always
been too close. The earth thus removed
has been used to grade the street in front of
his residence, and makes a very sensible
and acceptable improvement. -
The members of the Chess club who .
called for an early adjournment on Friday
evening last, that they might rise early on

in a body to a brook near the Hue Factory

Nichols Beardsley, one of our oldest citi-
zens, has passed away. He was born in
Trumbull on the 28th of July, 1785, married
in 1808, and lIVed with the companion of his
youth nearly sixty years, being in his 87th
year at the time of his death, which occurr-
ed Tuesday, May 21, 1872.
The process of rebuilding the Washington
bridge has been commenced,and in due time
the structure will be completed.
The illness of George F. Tracey, Esq.,
postmaster ,of Bridgeport, has developed in to
derangement of a somewhat serious charac-
ter, and he has been taken to the Retreat at
Hartford for treatment.
An accident resulting in the death of
Samuel Eaton, occurred at Lyon & Curtis’
lumber yard. Mr. Eaton was employed in
assisting to discharge a load of lumber,
when one end of the heavy stick. of timber
slowed around and struck him under Ult-
chin‘ breaking his neck.
N. W. Vaudegrift, superintendent of -the
Howe Machine Company, is soon to sail for
Glasgow, Scotland, to. take charge of the
enlargement. of the Company’s factory in
