The Grist Mill near Bedding Center,
owned by Mr. Benedict, was destroyed by
fire on Wednesday night last, together with
flbulll eighty bushels of grain. We did not
learn the amount of insurance.

Things ' are prospering in this quiet
village. The oyster trade has been better
than usual the past winter. The farmers
.have most of their' seed in the ground
though the season is late. everal new
buildings are going tlp. The stores are well
filled with customers. The churches begin
to show full'scats on the Sabbath. Rev. Mr.
Day has returned to his old charge of the
Babtist church. The Sunday School attach-
ed to the church has been opened this
springasa Union Sunday School, under
the Superintendency of Vincent Colyer who
has commenced a Friday evening Bible
class. -
DARIEN.
Dr. Dio Lewis. of Boston, is to visit Miss
Rice’s Seminary this week.
M. E. Mead’s sale of houses, building lots,
&c., in Darien, takes place on the 23d inst.
Jere Johnson is to be auctioneer, and a free
excursion, free banquet and free music are
among the attractive features of the pro~
gramme.
WESTPORT.
Mr. Phillip Phillips, whose fine voice has
been.heard in all civilized lauds, sang for
the people of Snugatuck at their church on
Wednesday evening last. The proceeds
were for the benefit of the church. Avocal-
ist of so high merit and accomplishment as
Mr. Phillips Should have been favored with
a larger audience. The few who did attend
were delighted, and will cast lhelt' good
opinions in favor of their entertainer.
Intelligence, by telegraph, has been re-
ceived from Mrs. Lewis Bradley, who started
for Galveston, Texas, on the 4th, to the
effect that she had safely arrivr d at that.
place, and that her son Randolph was im-
proving in health.- This will be welcome
news to many here. . _ -
If the frame which was raised on Friday
is any indication, Mr. Alden is about to com-
plete one of the finest barns in the State.
- The lumber for it is purchased in and
brought fronl Norwalk.
Certain .boys in this town, with an eye to
securing capital for celebrating properly the
coming Fourthot July, talte time by the
forelock. Old iron is worth 94 of a cent
per pound, and every scrap from a horse
shoe up to a condemned cook pot is seizctl
as means to an end. Wood’s factory, with
all its intricate machinery and iron work,
was destroyed by .fire some time since, and
nothing had been done by the proprietors
towards removing the debris. Boys know
how to calculate, and, seeing a good chance,
went for the locality which was rich' in the
commodity they sought. Mr. Wood did not
get information of their game until a.few
days ago, and on going to the. premises to
find out about his damaged iron, found it out
indeed, and now advertises for the appro-
hension of the thieves; Boys, look out.
If city pebple were wise they would come
to the country now, In May, when the apple
and cherry trees are in blossom. Thts is the
only time during the season when nature is
absolutely beautiful by reason of her fresh-
ncss. Ten thousand happy bees attest the
truth of this.

The steamer City of Hartford ran into
schooner W. R. Knapp, of Southport, the

Amtau named John E. Perkins, of Pitts-
ficld,jutrlpcd from the up express train, last
Wednesday night, when nearing Bridgeport.
Two of ltis friends got off at the station and
tried to find him, but without success. Next
morning, however, his body was found by
the track badly mangled. There had been
some trouble about his fare, hcbeing unable
or unwilling to pay, but the conductor says
that no attempt was made to put him off.
A young man plowing . up a field, the
other day, losta horse in an old covered
cess-pool. He was drowned before he could

The undersigned, citizens and voters of
Connecticut, beg leave to urge upon the Sen-
ators and Representatives itr our State Leg-
islature the following considerations :
first, That one of the fundamental prin-
ciples of our political and civil institutions
is, that every man is bound to act on all
questions ol'public policy, and in the selec-
tion of State and National representatives,
according to his individual judgment and
conscience, and that any subjection of his
judgment and conscience to the rule or die-
tation of one or many, is an abandonment of
rights and personal dut y, hostile to ourselves
as a self-governing people, and directly in
the interest of those' who deny the right of
man to self-government. ‘ _ -.
Second, That Our caucus system has its,
proper limits, within which It is useful, but
beyond which it is productive only of evil ;
and that caucus action should be confined to
cases where the right and expediency of
measures is in no doubt, or where the want
of preconcerted ngr ement may cause the
It ss of some principle or of some important
representative of right principles; in short
—that when non-caucus action will bring no
loss of principle or powetfinnd will give no
advantage to those who hold and would
carry out wrong principles, then and there
caucus action becomes unwarrantuble and
injurious. ,
Third, That Congress has, in its recent
law. prescribing that on the second Tuesday
of the sessron of the Legislature the roll shall

The funeral of the late William S. Bur-
well was humorously attended at Christ

that each body shall be secured against the
undue influence of the other ;_ that each

Caucusses, and that the “voice” given shall
be “his voice" and not “a voice” dictated to
him by somebody, else. In short, a vote
giVen in aecordanceavith the terms of the
freeman's oath; which requires that it shall
be given “without respect of persons or fav
or of any man, ' ‘ ’ ‘ ' .
Fifth—:That Mr, Berry's record and servi-
ces are such as to make It. in these times. a
matter of duty and principle that he be re-
turned to the Senate of the United States,
and that his re-appointmeut is not a matter
of expediency ora thing of indifference, to
be submitted to the determinatiatl ot'a cau-
cus. And they hold that such reflection is
due to him; that the welfareof the nation
requires it, and that it is in accordance with
