At the burning of the stables opposite the
depot, last week, the most interesting fea-
ture, as far as the general public was con-
cerned, was the fact that this 'was the first
occasion for proving the eflcienc Of our

with fire. Right nobly did it anewer its
purpose. A section of hose belonging to
the Railroad Co. was attached to the depot
hydrant and proved of the most vital impor
ance in saving the buildings adjacent to the
burning stables. The firemen were prompt-

through the front doors, which the opera-
tar opened with false keys. The goods
taken consisted mostly of km gloves, lace,
velvet ribbons, Japanese srlks and broche

shawls. There were no shutters to the
front of the store, and the gas was left/burn-
.ing all night. It was a bold Operation as
well as a successful one.

A child of Henry L. Reed,aged two years,
fell down two steps on a stairway in the

house, Monday evening, and broke one of

its arms.

The award of the contract for the build-
ing of the new jail has been made to Foster
Brothers, of Danbury. for $29,400. Work

The jewelry store of Clark do Hampton in
Daubury, was entered, by forcing the front
doors, at 2 o’clock Friday morning. The
safe was drilled and blown open, and rob-

Methodist church last Tuesday evening.

church, Brookficid, has tendered his resig-
nation—to take effect on Easter Day.

The schooner Harry Conrad, of New
Haven, was run into on the night of the 4th
inst, eight miles southeast of Cape May,
and was abandoned. The steamer Albe-
marle, which arrived at New York Wed-
nesday from Richmond, reports that she
found the Harry Conrad with both anchors
down, barely floating, with a boat floating,
astern, in w ich were Captain Parker, son
and wife, Mate Bushnell, Robert Brown,
Wm. Smith, George Smallet and James
Moore, seamen, all of Clinton, and allnearly
frozen to death. They were rescued with
much difficulty and revived by the captain
and ofiicers of the Albemarle and brought
to New York. Ina few hours longer all
would have been frozen to death. The
schooner was owned by James H. Hoyt, su-
perintendent of the New York and New Ha-
ven railroad ; his son, the captain, and one
or two others; Loss about 40,000; no in-
surance. The vessel was almost new, and
was loaded with gas coal.

elected president of the commission which
is to have in charge the arrangements for
the centenary celebration of American In-
dependence, aud the world’s fair, in Phila—
delphia in 1876.

A paragraph in the Shoe and Leather Re-
porter states that there has been a strike
among the workmen in one of the morocco
factories in Philadelphia, caused by one of
their number wanting to have his son taken
in to learn the business, contrary to the
rules of the Morocco J ourneymen’s Associa-
tion, by which no apprentice can be taken
into a factory when there are men out of
employ. Now as there are always men out
of employ, smce some journeymen are not
fit lo work, this rule is almost a prohibition.
These rules are not peculiar to the Morocco
Journeyman. All trades in the country
have similar rules. The men are them-
selves the sufferers by it, in many instances
like the above, where the father of a fami-
ly finds that by the rules to which he is
bound he can not apprentice his own son to
any mechanical trade.

Mr. Clark Baldwin, of Milford, went out
to dig clams last Tuesday, that very cold
day, takin his boy with him. After they
got throng digging he sent the boy home
with the horse and wagon, saying he would
walk. Mr. Baldwin was afterwards found
near his house almost frozen to death. He
was taken home, and in a short time died.
