Friday, with an evening concert by the

GEORGETOWN. .
, Of the many entertainments in which
the people here have participated during
the winter, the supper given by the Odd
Fellows of this place on Wednesday even-
ing (complimentary to the Ridgeficld por-'7
tion of the Order,) will be remembered as
one of the most enjoyable, lively and pleas-
ant partys of the season. Owing io'thc ex-
treemc cold and the unpleasant nnin‘r'e ' Of-
the evening the attendance from Ridgefield
was small. The whole number present was
about seventy each of whom made it incum-
bent on themselves to try and increase the
pleasures of the rest. The peculiar feature
of the party was the absence Of that form-
ality and reserve which generally interfere
with social enjoyments. Of the table we
can say it. was superb in its arrayofdelh
cute and tempting viands. Oysters being
one of the chief refreshments their cooking
denoted skill, while of the cakes which orna -
lneuted as well as supplied the table there
were sufficient to have supplied a hundred,
and so delicate and varied as to satisfy the
most exacting epicure. Confectionscom-
pleted the supper.

The Republican Convention for the pur-
pose Ol' nominating a candidate for the posi-
tion of Sheriff Of Fairfield County convened
at the Norwalk Opera House, on Wednes-
day, Feb. 28th.

and on motion GEN. WM. H. NOBLE, of
Brideport, was chosen temporary Chairman,
and John Tweedy, of Danbury, temporary

The woods near the Railroad track, for a
distance of two miles, were on fire last week.-
WESTPORT.
The funeral Of the late Miss Louisa Rob-
inson, aunt of Rev. John R. Williams, rec-
tor of Christ church, was attended at the
church, Rev. L. 8. Stevens officiating, on
Tuesday last. Miss R. had long been an inva-
lid and was found dead in her bed on Satur-v
day night, Feb. 24th. The remains were}
taken to Fairfieid for interment.
,The Westport Book Club, which had a
one year‘s existence and then quietly “shufU
fled,” left effects valued at about $100.00.
These were auctioned off on Monday, 26th
nit, by Mr. George S. Adams, :1 member
and the proceeds, amounting to 25 per cent.

Williams and Rev. Z. Davenport, for distri-

Saturday evening a gentleman expended
about ninety dollars for “prize package
candy," at a store on State street, and drew
sixteen or seventeen dollars in specie. The
candy cost him about seventy-five dollars.
Mr. Samuel A. Howe, only son of the. late
Elisha Howe, of, Bridgeport, is going to
Scotland to connect himself with the mainly
factory of the Howe Sewing Machine Com-
pany located there. , ,
Ml. Burroughs, Cashier of the Bridgeport
National Bank, was suddenly stricken with
apoplexy at the bank about ten O'clock
Saturday morning. 3 .
On Friday afternoon, a Mrs. Jones, Of
Slratford, an elderly lady while coming
from the store of 1) r. George Thompson,
fell from the steps and fractured her hips.
Mr. Patrick Welsh, employed at the NAD-
gatuck railroad dock, in Bridgeport was
seriously injured Friday while coupling
cars. One of his bands was caught and ter-
ribly laceruted. ' ’
The twenty-fourth, session of the New
York East Conference Of the Methodist

cepted the responsibility ; faithfully and suc-
cessfully did she discharge it. Soon the el-
dest son was called away in his youthful

refined the first-born daughter for the skies;
fourncblesons followed in quick succes-
sion, all having reached early manhood
with flattering prospects of success and
usefulness ; the remaining daughter bloom-
ed-into womanhood and faded. “All‘ these
died in the faith.” Thus all God’s waves
and billows seemed to compass and cover
her. But the Bow of the Covenant was
ever above her; her anchor was cast within
the veil; and so with serene composure
she ‘fwaited patiently” until she was gently
walled into' the havenrof peace.
All that constant devotion could possibly
conceive was lovingly rendered by the
surviving-son to nouris and cheer her de-
ciinin'g years, and the sunset of her life was
insubducd happiness and beauty. Her
character and lif: were revealed. in the
fruits of faith, love and patience—impressive
illustrations of the sweet uses , Of adversity
tempered and sanctified by 'the grace of

next Sunday, at the same hour, she was
