WESTPORT. _
Ice in the Saugatuck river one day last
week, was so thick that a tug had some
dimculty in working a barge loaded with
lumiien up as far as Staples' dock. Much
of it has since broken up and floated out of
the river. .. : , 2—. ,
A strange and unusual sight was witnessed
on Friday morning Iast pt I .10, o’clock and
one that, may not again be seen for years to
come. The Sun, Mon, and planet Venus,
were all in plainvicw at :one _time. The
latter may be found on any clear I day until
the middle of Jan. is stated recently.
Our village brass band shOuld arrive at a
degree of great efficiency, if constant prac-
tice will produce that result. There is
scarcely a‘nightin' the week that some of
them are not On hand for work at Betts’
Hall. .

0n Fridily night at about 11% o’clock a
fire broke out in a stable owned by William
Lee, Esq., near the corner of East Main and
Coleman Streets. .As it was a frame build-
ing very large, with a carpenter shop on the
Second floor, and the third floor filled with
sashes, blinds, doors and other materials, it
burned with such rapidity that four horses
in the stable referred to, could not be re-
moved, although great efl'orls were made to
save them, and consequently they were
burned. The wind blew strong from the
west and the flames from the stable soon
communicated with the Barr House on the
corner, occupied on the first floor as a sort
of Hotel, and above as a tenement, and as it
was also a wooden building, and one of the
largest in East Bridgeport, burntlikc tinder,
.and it was with the greatest efforts of fire-
men and others, all of whom strove no ly,
that the fire was kept fl'om spreading to
other frame boildings near. As it was, the
brick house owned by James M. Jones was
greatly damaged in the upper parts, and
other houses _near actually caught fire, but
were extinguished by pails of water. All
the Steam Fire Engines were on the ground
and did'the best they could, which was at a
disadvantage a'nyway as water had tO be
forced through hose over 900 feet in length.
The greater share of the burned buildings
were the property of Mr. John Barr.who
claims a loss of nearly or quite $30,000, on
whiCh was about $10,000 of insurance,Boyle
Bros lose $1,500. William Lee $1,200. Car-
