WESTPORT. .
Joy has been caused in many hearts
during the past week. A large number of
our poorer citizens, who dill not expect to
celebrate Thanksgiving, except by memory
of what perchance they once enjoyed on its
return, were enabled to partake of feasts,
and to bless those who, prompted by instinc-
tive benevolence, bestowed the means
through which their happiness, though
temporary, was, while it lasted, .none the
less complete. A few days before Thanks-
giving a kind citizen placed $500. 00 in the
hands of Rev. John R. Wilhams, Rector of
Christ church, v'vith instructions to disburse
as follows: To Memorial church, 8100;
Congregational, $100; Catholic, 8100' -
Methodist churches at Wesiport and Sauga-
tuck, each, 350; and to retain $100 for dis
tribution' in his own parish. In view of the
fact that the gift was wholly unsolicited,
and, indeed, unexpected, what a pleasant
lask it must have been for each of the pas-
tors to carry out the request. 'We are not
permitted to publish the name of the benev—
olent person, but the curious in casting
about for one who would be likely to do
such a thing, can very readily determine
who did it not. We may simply say the
person is well and favorably known among
us. At about the same time another well
diSi’osed person, also known, sought out
such as were needy, giving to one a ton of
coal, to another a barrel Of flour, and money
to such as needed it. The sum of his gifts
approximates many hundreds of dollars.
These transactions are the theme of favor-
abh- comment among our people just now.
Coming as they have with the advent of
winter, they cannot but result in great good.
If the greatest of all good works is charity,
and again, if charity is the fulfillment of all

A horse and carriage belonging to 'Mr.
flenry G. Middlebrook were staudipg near
the track, 111st Wednesdfiy morumg, between
Canaan's Station and Wilton when the
Danbury train came down. The horse was
frightened by the approach of the locomo-
tive and started across the track in that of
the train, The horse wag killed and the
carriage smashed. No persons injured.

$2,085 worth of postage stamps taken from
the Bridgeport Post ofice.
On Friday at 12: 15 o ’clOck, three men eu-
tered the Post oillcc which faces on two
streets, State and Bank streets. There was
only two persons in the office at the time.
G. S. Tracy and his clerk C. I. Seymour,
all the others had gone to dinner. . One of
the men went to the Bank street delivery,
the other to :thc State street delivery,
while the third stood aloof. Parties No. 1
and 2 began to talk about registered letters,
money matters, the best way to send money
by mail, etc. and gave the idea that they
proposed to send or receive large amounts.

As a good many people were going in and
out and wanted waiting on, Postmaster
Tracy said to his man, I cannot fully ex-
plain the plan of registering letters now,
but if you will step into the money order
office, at the same time pointed to the door. I
will very soon come to you and give com~
plete information. That would not answer,
now was the time, as he had to go away
soon. The same game was being played
with the clerk at the Opposite end of the
ofllcc. While they were thus intently en-
gl‘tgcd, party No.3 stealthily went into the
money order oriice, sealed :1 little wicket
gate surmounti'ng the counter, only used as
a means to get at the “night box" without
going around outside, passed into the rear
open, seized a quantity of stamps, retraced
his steps, 1-'eached the street, and thus made
good his escape. A $20. 00 bill and a small
amount of currency remained untouched.
A moment'iate’r,‘the,men so anxious to ob-
tain information hastily departed. '. Their
actions and m'anner had excited the suspi-
cions 'of Mr. Tracy and his clerk, each of
whom spoke instinctively ofjit, and on go-
ing to the safe discovered the robbery. It
took but an instant to ascertain the amount
stolen which is as follows, 57'500‘ three cent
stamps, 4 ,000 two cent. and 28, 000 one cent
stamps, valued at $2, 085. Mr. Tracy went
at once to the police station, caught his man
in the act of buying a ticket for New York,
house, and search being made a burglars
key was found on his person. Party No.2
was caught on the train which leaves this
city at 12: 40 brought back to Bridgeport and
locked up. No stamps were found on eith er
of the men and the third party with the
stamps is still at large with no clue to him
as yet. Both culprits remained in jail over
Sunday and will be tried before U. S. 00111.

The new jail, in Bridgeport, is a model
institution The building is heated b
steam, with gas pipes extending all throng
it, and is also arranged for hot and cold wa-
ter for cooking and other purposes. It con-
tains a dwellipg, for the jailor;a chapel.
with separate halls of entrance; a debtors’
room in the tower, over the front hall, - a
hospital and sick room; ninet -two cells,
eighty for males and twelve or females.
The building has cost about 880,000, for
which bonds were issued by the count.
The inmates of the jail were employed in
excavating for the foundations and 831116
$2, 000 saved. The building is 106 feet front
and 173 feet deep. Connected with the
county buildings is a tract of eight or nine -
acres containing a valuable quarrv.
Apublic reception will. be tendered the
Bridgeport, by Governor Jew'ell' 1n behalf of
the State, and by Mayor Goodsell in behalf
of the city. The special train will arrive at
precisely 11 o ’clock, A. 11., on Thursday, the
7th inst. The public will have an oppor-
tunity of seeing the distinguished visitor.
After the public reception which will take
place at the depot, his Imperial Highness
will re-enter the car and proceed to the
cartridge factory for the purpose of inspect--
ing the works. The visit to the factory will
bedstrictly private, and no one will be admit-
te
