‘fI think you are mistaken, Mr. Brick,”
said Vanderbilt, after reading the advertise-
ment, “for though you did not say here, in

' “It WoUld sartinly be fair to infer that the
critter was sold for sound if the advertise-
ment reads as you read it,” said I, “but it
don’t; look a little closer, and you'll find
thut it~says the horse was too Imam-y : that’s
considerable of a fault, I calculate. I scorn
to take a man in; about a horse, so I pub-
lishedhis defects to all the world. I said
he was too heave-y for harness, and so he is;
crinsefimntly he ain't worth much, anyway:
I wo dn't take the critter as a gift, if I was
obligated tokeep him: in shoal, he ain’t
worth condom!" . '

“Well I‘ did notice that the word heavy
was wron ly spelt,” said Van Dam, “but I
supposed tto be a mistake of the printer,
or that the writer of the advertisement had
this-spelt the :WOrd."

“Oh," said I, “I guess I can spell tolera-
ble well ; and what is more, I know how to
sell a horse; «and ’cause you don’t know
how to buy-oneg'it ain’t a goin’ to mend the
matter by gettin’ in a passion and calling
me all that long string of names you did jest
now.” ‘

Van Dam began to teel a little ashamed of
himself, so he finally shook hands, and said
to inc-and the Captain, “Come aboard and
let’s liquor-:I‘ll stand treat.”

I felt sorry for the poor fellow ; so I let
up on the fifty dollar bet—told him how to
feed and manage the horse to make him
show ofi‘ well, and advised im to send the
critter up to ISaratoga forsale, during the
greenhoru season, where, likely as not, he’d
fetch more’n he cost. -

Van Dam took my advice. The horse
was sold, without warrant, for seven hun-
dred. dollars, and, as soon as it got known
around. that he was the seller, it raised his

' reputation as a lawyer amazingly. In fact,
he became suddenly popular, and was elec-'
ted Lieutenant Governor the next year. .' '

fully impressed upon the-youthful mind. Is
it not equal] the dutv of the elders to re-

terms ofthe proverb: “ It’s a poor rule that
won’twork boih ways.” This is a sound
principle, having scarcely an exception.
Certainly the relations of the juvenile and
mature members of-society do not' ofl'er an
exceptions If grown rsons demand re-
spect from, they shoul also give it to chil-
Oren—not merely for the purpose of teach-
-in by example, but from a sense of justice.

True, children ere sometimes noisy and
inclined to ,mischlef. The child who does
not develop those tendencies is unhealthy,
physically, mentallyIaud morally. But how
much. more. noise men make, and how far
moreserious the-consequences of their mis-
chief 1 Children do not plunge nations into
war, shedding rivers of 'blood and clothing
continents With mourning: Men do. Chil-
dren do not misgovern cities, states and em-
pires for; their town selfish and ambitious
purposes. Men do. Children do not lun-
der the public treasury. Men do. Chi dren
do not maintain political, railroad and min—
ing “rings” at the to use of the people, and
create monopolies o a few for the oppres-
sion of the many, so that a small number
may grow ric while the ' masses starve.
Men do: Child do not commit the great
variety of mdmdual and organized crimes,
some of t mvenial and some of them in-
famous, m which society sufl‘ers. Men
do. The contrast might e iilustratively
amplified to any extent. Who, then, are
the real nuisances, men or children ? 'It
might be shown that children are actually
en tied to 'more;cousideration and respect
than any other class of the community. ‘

Then let them be encouraged rather than
magi-eased. Let their pleasure as well as
th improvement be carefully provided
for. Let ents tolerate childish'sports and
