And like lawyers they cling to a chap to the lad,
And blade both alike the foe and the friend.

Secure a Homestead.
Fvery landless man should proceed with-
out delay to procure n. homestead—land
enough, much or little, in the borough or
suburbs. upon which to build a house and
have a home. If he has no money, let him
begin at once to save enough for the first
payment. As soon as he shall have $50, or
$100, he should buy a lot, make the first
payment, and get sufficient time to enable
him to make the subsequent payments. He
should at the same time get his life insured
in a life company, for at least the amount
,of the deferred payments, which will cost
but a trifle.
If he has but a small sum, say $50, or
$100, for the first payment, be can purchase
lots which in a few years will be worth two
or more times its cost. Every day deferred
in making a purchase is money and oppor-
tunitylost. In four or five years population
will no doubt nearly double, which will
greatly increase the value of lots.
In this country, for every poor man, who
is not to sickly to work—thege is no good
excuse for being landncss. The more home
owners we have, the more m to], patriotic,
thrifty and prosperous will be our people;
the greater and more populous our‘town ;
the better our municipal government; lower
the taxes ; the more the school houses ; the
better our religion ; the more everything
that is good and the less everything that is
bad.
Believing all this,wc feel that we render a
great service lo every poor man, whom we
persuade to save from his earnings enough
to buy a lot fora home.
The International Bowing Match,
John and Barney T. Biglin, Henry Colton
and Joseph Haye, J r., who will represent
the United States in the international race
at Halifax on the 29th inst, are practising
daily on the Harlem river, in shell boats 42
feet long and 18 inches wide, and weighing
108 pounds. Elliott is building them a new
boat the same length, but is one inch nar»
rower, and to weigh but 90 pounds. The
men on the day of the race will weigh on an
average 153 pounds per man. They are in
strict training, and row twice the distance of
the Halifax course three times a day, besides
walking and other exercises. They have
made the Knickerbocker Hotel their head-
quarters, and the Gramercy Boat Club have
placed their boat house at their disposal.
An effort is being made to raise a subscrip-
tion for them of $1,000. The men them-
selves feel confident of success, and will
probably leave Harlem for Halifax on the
20thvinst., so that they may become acquaint-
cd with the tide and currents of the harbor
before the final struggle. They will be ac‘
companied by J. S. Cosgrove as the fifth man,
in case of accident to either of the crew.
The Brooklyn Eagle,a democratic journal
of confessed ability and influence, denounces
Hall’s impotent excuses in severe terms,‘and
concludes its scathing article as follows:
“The mayor, who was already buried under
the odium 'of his servility to the mob, has now
a monument of infamy raised over his grave
by the revelation of this new court-house
jobbery. This exposure ends the federal as»
piration and state career of the Tammany
ring. Fortunately for Govenor Hofiman
the riot episode come just in time to prove
in the most conclusive way that he is not of
the ring, and that Mayor Hall, who ‘is,
envies,hatcs, and expected to supersede him.
No party can attempt to carry the load of
the new court-house, now that its real
weight has begun to be ascertained. The
tenth part of such a load sank Fernando
Wood, when his power was as great in oili-
cial circles as Mayor Hall’s is now,”
Grass for Hones.
There is no better medicine to keep work
horses in good condition during summer than
a bite of grass. Horses that have such slow
work as plowing are better out in the field
at night where they chn get such grass as
well keep them feeding half the time. They
should however, have their regular feed in
the stable before being .turned out, as the
gpss will not answer in places of more sub-
stantial feed. chcrleta work horse spend

Turn him out, if he does roll in a wet spot
and give occasion for an extra cleaning on
Monday morning. He requires just such a
change of exercise and feed to keep him in
good health.
The wife of a gentleman at our hotel tells
a good story at her husband’s expense. It
is well understood that they did not live
pleasantly together, but evidence of this is
rarely seen in public. The other evening,
when taking their usual drive one word
brought on another, when the husband
said : “You will drive me mad." “I should
call that admirable driving,” rctorted the
wife. “By Jove i" exclaimed the husband,
“if you say another word I will drive down
into the sea.” They were then near one of
the roads that leads down to the beach.
“Another word!” screamed the lady.
“Drive where you please,” she added, “into
' the sea. I can go as deep as you dare to go,
any. day." He became furious, took her at
her word, and drove the horse and vehicle
into theocean. They began to swim. He
held in, looking into her face, and she laugh-
ing inhis. , “Why do you stop i'" she do-
manded . 'exultingly, exhibiting not the
slightest alarm. “You are a devil l” he ex.
claimed, turning the herses about, making
for the shore withall expedition. “Pooh!
pooh I,” laughed the tormentor. ”Learn from
this that there is no place where you dare
to go,whcreIdare not accompany you. She
had conquered. The pair returned to the
hourle, and the only evidence of anything
extraordinary'having occurred was the ap-
pearance' of .the poor horses. The lady re-
peated the story to one or two female friends,
and, of course, such things are to good to

Mr. R. J. Bright, democratic State printer
of Indiana, has flunked. He was charged
with a. $20,000 fraud. ' In his paper be pro-
fessed himself ready to meet his accusers and
courted an immediate trial. They took him
at his word and had him arrested for perjury.
They engaged a stenograplier and got
their witnesses together. All but four were.
democrats. The hour came, but not the
man. Mr. Bright waived an examination
and gave bail. The Indianapolis Journal
says: We have done all in our power to
put the case where the public could have all
.the facts. Ier. Bright will sue us for libel
and malicious prosecution, we will make a
deposit of $10,000 in a national bank in this
city, with spawn of attorney to Mr. Bright’s
council to receive any sum that may be ad-'
judged against us in such an action. Such
an action would enable us to prove in pub-
lic what we have said about him.
