TEE IMPORTANCE or LEARNING A TmDE.
A writer in the Manufacturer and Builder
pertinently asks :—“Why is it that there is
such repugnance on the part of parents to
puffing their sons to a trade 1‘”
A skilled mechanic is' an independent
man. Go where he will his craft will bring
him support. He used ask favors of none.
He has, literally, his fortune in his own
hands. Yet foolish parents, ambitious that
their “sons should rise in the world,” as they
say, are more willing that they should study
for a profession, with the chances of even
moderate success heavily against them, or
r run the/risk of spending their manhood in
the feminine task of retailing dry goods or
of toiling laboriously at the accountant’s
desk, than learn a trade which would bring
them manly strength, health and independ-
ence. In point of fact, the method they
chose is the one least likely to achieve the
advancement aimed at; for the supply of
candidates for the position as “errand boys,"
dry goods clerks, and kindred occupations
is notoriously beyond the supply. The cry-
ing need of this country to day is for skilled
labor, and that father who neglects to pro-
vide his son with a useful trade, and to see
that he thoroughly masters it, does him
a grievious- wrong, and runs the risk of help-
ing, by so much, to increase the stock’of
idle and dependent, if. not vicious members
of society. . - .
It is stated in the report of the Prison As-
sociation, lately issued, that of fourteen
thousand five hundred and ninety-six pris-
oners confined in the penitentiaries of thirty
States, in 1867, seventy-seven per cent. or
over te‘tbousand of the number had never
learned a trade. The fact conveys a lesson
of profound interest to, those who have in
charge the training of boys, and girls, too.

Mrs. Susan King Higgin,‘ of Quarry Bank
West Derby, Liverpool, England, widow of
the late Robert Higgin, Esq, an eminent
merchant of that city Whose early years of
commercial life were spent in United States,
.has presented to the Sbefileld Scientific
school the sum of five thousand pounds ster-
etc.
Ellis agrees with Mr. Trumbull, that these
numerals among the Indians are of Welsh
origin.
Rev. Joseph Anderson, of Waterbury, read
a paper on “The newly discovered relation-
ship of the Tuteloes to the Dakota stoc .”
He slated that the Tuteloes were a tribe of
Indians, now extinct. When first visited by
Europeans, they were situated on the Meli-
errin river, a branch of the Chowan, in South ‘
eastern Virginia and Northeastern North
Carolina. In consequence of their being in-
corporated in the eighteenth century into the
confederacy of the Six Nations, it had been
supposed that they were of the Iroqugis
stock, but the evidence presented by Mr.
Anderson went to show not only that the
Tuleloes were not Iroquois, but that they be-
longed to the Dakota stock or Sioux Na-
tions, situated, since they were visited by
white men, around the head waters of the
Mississippi. The evidence relied upon to
establish this fact consisted of a vocabulary
of Tutelo words, taken from the mouth of
old Nikungba, the‘lust of his race, by Horace
Hale, of Clinton, Canada. Mr. Hale visited
him last winter to assure himself that the
Tutelo was Iroquois dialect, and found that
the list of words furnished by the old man
., showed no affinity to the Iroquois language,
but that they did to the Dakota.‘ Mr. An-
derson read extracts from letters written to
Mr. Hale by Rev, Mr. Riggs. a missionary
among the Dakotas. He also presented a
compartativc vocabulary of the Tutelo, Da‘
kota and Iroquois languages, and called at-
tention to the bearing Of Mr. Hale’s discov-
ciy upon the subject of Indian migration
and upon the question whether the Dakotas
came into their present area from the North-
west, as claimed by Mr. Lewis H. Morgan,
or from the East.

STILL ANOTHER CANCER REMEDY.—“A
Physician" writes to the Herald as follows:
I have tried the “cundurango” in several
cases of cancer. It is an efficient alterativci
but in several fiesI entirely failed. I have
tried tea infusion of the red clover tops in
ten cases of cancer and failed in none. I
will venture the assertion that by the means
of this unpretentious plant I will cure more
cases of well-sealed canceroid deposits than
“cundurango,” or any other remedy that is
known to the materia medica, can effect. I
feel that I cannot urge upon the public too
strongly the wonderful remedial alterative
power of this plant, and having been in the
practice of medicine about forty years, it
must be conceded I have had some experi-
ence. For all dermic diseases and cutane-
ous affections the. red clover tops are the
most efficient remedy I have ever tried. I
have cured some fifteen cases of cancer that
my brother physicians had abandoned as
incurable. Let every farmer understand
there is flourishing in‘ his fields a remedy
which is far the superior to “cundurango”
in its wondrous curative properties, and that
remedy is the red clover tops. In my hands.
it has proved for more powerful than “cun-
dilrango," for I have had ample opportunity
Of testing the latter in the country of its
growth. To use the red clover, all that is
necessary is to render a tea of it, and drink
freely through the day. A piece of rag
ought lobe wet with the tea and kept ap-
plied to the cancerous sore. I assert that
as an alterative, the red clover tops cannot
be excelled by any remedy in our materia
iiicdlca; and I hope the pedple will take
hood and govern themselves accordingly.
MEDICINAL-We published sometime since
an article clipped from an exchange, in
which allusion was made to the effect of
common. red clover in the treatment of can-
cer. Thc case cited was a very strong and
marked one, and well calculated to arrest at-
tention, if the statement could be verified
But of this nothing could be known, and the
article was inserted in the Telegraph, as
many things of this nature are, because of
the possibility of their truth and utility, and
the evident harmlessness of a trial of the rec-
ommendations. The attention of one of our
citizens was called to the article, and having
had a sore upon his under lip for some ten
years, which several of the medical profes-
sion had successively attempted to heal and
remove, without success, and which it was
supposed, was of ,a cancerous nature, Or at
least, if not now, such would, if not cured,
be the form taken, was induced to try the
clover treatment. He ehewcd the clovar
heads and kept the diseased part moistened
with the clover impregnated saliva,and drank
freely ofa decoctiou, or ten made of the clo-
ver- This was followed up closely for four
days, when the healing process became ap-
parent, and went on untila cure was appar-
ently effected, and the lip to all appearance
and facing, restored to soundness. The dis-
appearance of the sore was accompanied by
a return of the wonted tone of bodily vigor,
and: capacity for labor, which had been,
measurably at Ieastfimpaired and lost. This
result is confidently attributed to the clover
treatment, and the connection of cause and
effect seems so close as to afford a pretty good
warrant for the conclusion. The case, we
think. is, at least. Worthy of the attention of
the medical faculty, as well as those afflicted
with istubbom,cbronic sores, whether can-
cerous or not. These facts, as here given,
willvbe affirmed by Mr. L. D. GATES, of our
village, from whose lips they were taken,
and to whom the reader is referred.

The Brooklyn limes claims, that Tam-
many recently made desperate efforts to buy
the N. Y. Times, which failed, and that then
