HOW TO SAVE THE 'DBOWNED.
, Many valuable lives are lost owing to ig-
norance and want of proper instructions
how to proceed when the bodies of persons
are recovered from the water. The follow-
ing instructions are based on the principles
of the late Dr. Marshall Hall,combined with
those of Dr. H. R. Sylvester, and are the re-
sult of extensive inquiries made among the
principal medical bodies in England, France,
and this country. I have known cases of
persons being recovered after having been
in the water fifteen minutes and over, by fol-
lowing these rules. I would recommend
every one of your readers to cut out the in-
structions and carry them in their pocket-
book, so that in cases of emergency they
might have them handy for use. These in-
structions are printed on large placards and
are used all oyer England and in many of
her colonies, and also in many other coun-
tries, being translated into the various for-
eign languages.
TREATMENT on THE APPABENTLY DnowNED.
Send immediately for medical assistance,
blankets, and dry clothing, but proceed to
treat the patient instantly on the spot,in the
open air, with the face downward, whether
on shore or afloat; exposing the face, neck,
and chest to the wind, except in severe
weather, and removing all tight clothing
from the neck and chest, especially braces.
The points to be aimed at are: First and
immediately, the restoration of breathing;
and secondly, after breathing is restored,
the promofim of warmth and circulation.
The efforts to restore breathing must be
commenced immediately 1nd enegetrically,
and persevered in for one or two hours, or
until a medical man has pronounced that
life is extinct. Efi'orts to promote warmth
and circulation, beyond removing the wet
clothes and drying the skin, must not be
made until the first appearance of natural
breathing: for if circulation of the blood be
induced before breathing has recommenced,
the restoration of life will be endangered.
To RESTORE DHEATHING. ' '
To clear the throat—Place the patient on
the floor or ground with the face downward
and on of the arms under the f6rehead,in
which ition all fluids will more readily
- escape by themouth, and, the tbngue itself
will fall~'forward, leaving the entrance into
the windpipe free. Assist this operation by
wiping and clensing the mouth. If satisfie-
tory breathing commences, use the treat-
ment described below to promote warmth.
If there be only slight breathing—or no
breathing—or if the breathing fail, 'then— '
To W Breathing —Turn the patient
well and instantly. on the side supporting
the head, . and excite the nostrils with
snufi’, hartshorn, and smelling salts, or tickle
the throat with a feather, doc, if they are at
hand. Rub the face and chest warm, and
dash coldwuter, or cold and hot water alter-
nately, on them. If there be no success, lose
not a moment, but instantly—
To Inmate Breathing—Replace the patient
on the face, raising and supporting the chest
well on a folded coat or other article of
dress. Turn the body very gently on the
'side and a' little beyond, and then briskly on
the face,back again, repeating these meas-
ures cautiously, efficiently, and persevering-
1y, about fifteen times in the minute, or once
every f9_ur orfive seconds, occasionally va-
rying the side, By placing the patient on
the chest, the Weight of the body forces the
air out; when turned on the side, this pres
sure is removed, and air enters the chest.
On each occasion that the body is replaced
on the face, make uniform but eflicient pres-
sure with brisk movement, on the back be-
low the Sh‘onlder-blades or bones on each
side, removing the pressure immediately be-
fore turning the body on the side. During
the whole of the operations let one person
attend solely to thu movements of the head
and arm placed under it. The first measure
increases the expiration, the 'second com-
mences inspiration. The result is respira-
:ion or natural breathing : and if not too late,
ife. '

the lungs). Then turn down the patient’s
arms, and press them gently and firmly for
two seconds against the sides of the chest,.
(By this means air is preSSed out of the
lungs). Repeat these measures alternately:

times a minute, until a spontaneous effort to
respire is perceived, immediately upon which
cease to imitate the movements ofbreatbing,
and proceed to induce ‘ circulation and

TREA'nIENT AFTER NATURAL BREATHING HAS

To Promote Warmth add. Circulation.—
Commence rubbing the limbs upward, with
firm grasping pressure and energy, using
handkerchiefs, flannels, «be. (By this meas-
ure the blood is propelled along the veins
toward the heart.) The friction must be con-
tinued under the his st or over the dry
clothing. Promote the warmth of the body
by the appl cation of hot flannels, bottles or
bladders of hot water, heated bricks, &c., to
the pit of the stomach, the arm-pits,'between
the thighs, and to the soles of the feet. If
the patient has been Carried to a house after
respiration has been restored, be caretlil to
let the air play freely about the room. 0n
the restoration to life, a tea‘spoontul of warm
water should be given: and then, if the pow-
er of swallowing has returned, small quan'
titres of wine, warm brandy and water, or
coffee. should be administered. The patient
should be kept in bed, ‘and a disposition to
sleep encouraged. '
The above treatment should be persevered
in for some hours, as it is an erroneous opin-
ion that persons are irrecoverable because
life does not soon make its appearance, per-
sons having been restored after persevering
for many hours.

entirely; the eyelids are generally half clos-
ed; the pupils dilated; the jaws clenched;
the fingers semi—contracted; the tongue ap-
proaches to the under edges-of the lips, and
the se as well as the nostrils, are covered
with a frothy mucus. ColdneSS and pal-
lor of surface increase.
CAUTIONS.
Prevent unnecessary crowding of persons
round the body, especially it in an apart.-
ment. Avoid rough usage, and do not allow
the body to remain on the back unless the
tongue is secured. Under no circumstance
place the body in a warm bath unless under
medical direction, and even then it could on-
ly be employed as a momentary excitent.
Sunday-school Progress in the South.
A missionary of the American Sunday
School Union in Virginia writes: “Last Sun-
day, I made a journey of several miles along
one of pur principal roads to meet an ap-
pointment. How it cheered my heart to be—
hold the evidences of the prosperity of our
Sunday schools on the route, and'how strik-
ing the improvement during the last twelve
or fifteen months! The boys and girls were
pouring into the different schools, it seemed
from all quarters. Among others was one
colored school, held in a glove until their
little log-house is finished, very prosperous,
and old and young were gathering in.
“Where there was but one schopl only a
few months ago, and that veryfieble, there
are now in that district sic: large and flour-
ishing schools. Such is the revolution ef.
fected, by God’s blessing, on my field. In
the first school organized by me a consider-
able revival has occurred, resulting in the
hopeful conversion of many souls. At other
points much interest has been awakened.”
He speaks of a colored Sunday school, or-
ganized in a place where much prejudice ex-
isted, in an old still-house, where the waters.

DEAE SID. : I know of nothing in my hab-
its that deserve public attention. I was
formerly called a “ Grahamite ;" that is'I
rarely ate meat ; and it is still my convic-
tion that meat should be eaten very spar-
ingly. I out however, like other .folks, not
having time to make myself disagreeable
to everybody by insisting on special food
wherever I go, since I~travel much and eat
in many places in the course 'of a year. I
ceased to drink distilled liquors January 1
1824, when Iwas not quite thirteen years
old. I occasionally drank beer four or five
years thereafter, when I abandoned that
also. I cannot remember thatI ever more
than tasted wine. I stopped drinking coffee
about 1834, because it made my hand .trem-
ble. I am opposed to nerves. I did not
drink tea for a quarter of a century, ending
in 1861, when I had the brain fever and was
very ill. My doctor insisted that I should
drink either claret or tea, and Ichose the tea,
which (black) I have generally used since,
though not uniformly. My favorite exercise
is trimming up trees in aforest with an axe,
cutting out underbrush,&c- I wish I could
take more of it, bub my farm is distant and
my family scattered. I sometimes lift
weights at the Lifting Cure. I have only
lifted 265 pounds since I became sixty years
old, February 3d last.

Yesterday one of our justices of the peace
was called upon in haste to perform the cer-
emoig of marriage for a man and woman
who had been for several years lawfully
married. The case was a somewhat sing—.1-
lar.one. The man and woman were mar-
ried some years ago in Douglass county, but
theman and his mothervin-luw did not get
along very well—in' short, she made it hot
for him. After awhile the mother-in-law
succeeded in persuading the wife to com-
mence proceedings for a divorce, at Rose-
“ burg. At the trial the husband put in an
appearance and the suit was compromised,
ind, as the parties supposed, an end made
of it. Subsequently the man came to the
Wallam'et Valley and commenced a suit for
divorce at Eugene city. At the trial the
wife appeared; this suit also was compro-
mised,and the husband and wife came to Port
land to get away from the “old woman,”
who seems to have been at the bottom ofall
the trouble. Yesterday or the day before,
they received a dispatch stating that the
wife had justheen divorced by a decrec'of
the Circuit Court at Rosebutg. This news
fell like a bombshell in the family circle, and
is nothing could be done except to repair
lamages, the justice was called in and the
twain were again made one flesh, despite the
machinations of the “old woman"bnd the
