The Happiest Man in Illinois.
An eminently intelligent merchant in Illi-
nois said with deep emotion to a friend 01
mine, “I believe I have beenmore blessed
than any man in Illinois, Myself, wife, and
five children are all members of the same
church, we all sit down at the same com.
munion table of our Lord; we all sing in tht
same choir; we all teach in the same Sun-
day-school, and all take turns in leading the
family devotions. I believe if there is a
heaven on earth we have it.” Atler a pause
occasioned by his emotion, he added, “We
owe this happy state of things, under God,
chiefly tothe influence of theSunday-school."
He further remasked, that there was no way
in which be expended his money, where the
good results were in his view so great as in
Sunday-schools. This man, Ilearn, has con
tributed thousands Of dollars to aid the
American Sunday-School Union in estab-
lishing Sunday-schools in the West.
We do not wonder he appreciates the val-
ue of the immense missibnary labor that
this society performs. The country does not
perhaps fully appreciate it. I learned from
a friend of the Rev. Dr. Newton, that this
society has expended nearly two million. dol-
. a a s s -
lara in organizmg and sustaining Sunday-
schools, and that this large sum has been re-
alized chiefly from the centributions of indi-
viduals, churches, and Sunday-schools.
The Lord be praised for all that this and
kindred societies are doing! The Lord be
praised for the whole Sabbath-school agency!

WHAT Is A CABAT ?-—The carat is an in
a 'nar weight that expresses the fineness
o gol , or the propbrtion of, pure old in a
mass of metal; abus, an ounce 0 gold is
divided into 54 carats, and gold of 22 carats
fine is gold of which 22 parts out of 24 are
pure, the other two parts being silver, copper
or other metal ; the weight of 4 grains, used
by jewelers in weighin precious stones and
pearls, is sometimes on led diamond weight
the carat consisting of 4 nominal grains,a
little lighter than" 4grai'as troy, or 74 1-16
carat grains being equal to 72 grains troy.
The term or weight carat derives its name
from a bean, the fruit of an Abyssinian tree,
called kuara. This bean, from the time of
its being gathered, varies very little in its
weight, and seems to have been, from a very
remote period, used as a weight for gold in
Attica. In India also the. burn is used as a
weight for gems and pearls.

the wheat crop, amounting to about four per
cent. or nearly three-fourths of a million

follows :--New York, 1 per cent; ew Jeri
sey,2; Ohio, 6; Michigan,4; Wisconsin,4;
Minnesota, .10; Iowa, 15; Kansas, 30; Ne-
braska, 25; and Oregon, 3 A small de-
crease appears in the New England States.
