After a lingering illness of many months,
during which he hasbeen a great but patient
sufi‘ercr, Mr. George L. Cable departed this
life on Sunday evening, agedfil years. The
funeral will take place on the 5th, at 2 o’clock
p. m., at the Memorial Church, upon the ser-
vices Of which he had up to the time of his
' sickness been a constant attendant for a term
of years. The burial will be conducted with
Masonic ceremonies. Mr. Cable was one of
our most prominent public men, having in
former years been Postmaster and identified
with matters of public interest. Had been
Town Collector for a long period, holding
the office at the timeof his death. He was
a former member of .St: J ohnls Lodge, Nor-
walk, and later did much for the establish-
ment of Temple Lodge, NO. 05, of this town
' of which he was the first Master, and a most
able helper and defender. His first connec-
tion with the fraternity dates far back to-
wards the beginning Of the century. His de-
mise will be mourned by a large circle of
friends. 0 "

GREENWICH.
The Clara LOUise Kellogg Concer came
off in the Metho'dist Church on Tuesday eve-
ning last. As a matter of course the church
was crowded with citizens of Greenwich,
Portchester, Stamford, and other places.
Miss Kellogg is reported to “have sung her
best,” and delighted all. The artists who
appeared, besides Miss Kellogg, were Miss
Maggie R. Parker, soprano, Mr. Aldolph
Sohst,basso, Mr. W. S. Leggat, tenor, and
Mr. Geo. W. Colby, pianist. ~
A new quarry of blue granite has been
opened at Byram Cove and said to be one
of the first in the State. Fifty men are
employed. .
STAMFORD.
In connection with the celebration of the
Fourth, to-day, the Stamford people are to
jubilatc over the introduction of Water. A
tountain has been erected in “Central Park”
and the people are invited to see the water
turned on at 9% a. m. The Warden and
others will deliver brief addresses.
The Catholic societies, escorted bya band
will make a parade, then spend the day at
Woodside Park, and hold a Ball in the eve-
ning at Seely’s Hall. No fireworks are pro-
vided publicly, but good private displays
are hoped for. The day will be ushered in
and out by the firing ofNational salutes and
riniging'of bells. -
Water was turned on into the street pipes
for the first time last Tuesday. Hose was
attached and a x inch stream thrown about
ninety feet. They ex'pect to do better after
the water gets the hang of the pipes.
The steamer Americas makes an excur-

The scaffolding has been removed from
about the Town House, which now presents

Work on the new Catholic church is be-
ing pushed forward rapidly. The rear wall
is now some fifteen feet above the founda-
lion.
Mr, J. L. Leeds has purchased the old
Continental Works, at Riverside, late Mc-

Sunday afternoon as James Owens,-J ames
Hall, and a boy named Henry Veil, were
sailing a. boat off Point-nO-Point, just out-
side, this harbor, they discovered the body
of a man floating on the water. With some
difficulty they made fast to the body and
.tode it to the city, where a coroner’s jury
held. It was found to be in an advanced
state of decomposition, the face beingen-
tirely gone. On the abdomen were three
wounds which looked as if they had been
indicted by a sharp instrument. The epin-
ion prevails that the man was murdered on
some passing vessel and thrown overboard.
The bodyhad evidently lain in the water
several weeks. Twenty-three cents were
found in the pockets, but no papers to indi-
cate name or nationality of deceased. He
had black hair, and looked to be about45
years of age.
A man by the name of Patrick Flynn
committed suicide in this city on Sunday
morning, using for the purpose a razor with
which he cut his throat from ear to car. He
was a drinking man, and lived Unhappily
with his wife, and is reported to have had
much trouble in one way or another for

The Bridgeport National Bank has de-
clared a semi-annual dividend of six per
cent, payable now. .
A two year old son of John Beardsley,
Strattord, fell‘ from a swing and broke his
arm.
The school house in Grand street is being
enlarged to double its former size.
Marcus Cook, aged 12, fell from a cherry
tree in Stratford and broke an arm.
Mr. James Wilson, one of the Bridgeport
Ice teamsters,_was carrying a block of ice
weighing about 150 pounds up an outside
flight of stairs at the Staples House this mor-
ning, when the stairs gave way and Mr.
Wilson fell some twenty feet striking on his
back. He was taken up insensible. No
bones were broken but Mr. W. will be dis.
abled for some time.
Two young girls were brought to the Sta-
tion House intoxicated, last Monday.
George Hines, a few» days since, picked up
a large New Foundland' dog in the Sound
off Stratt‘ord Point light house. The dog
was very much exhausted, apparent! hav-\
ing been in the water a long time. c had

A man named John Morton was shot by
Henry Curtis in Huntington, June 25th, and
died in about two hours. Curtis claims to

The foundation for the new light-house on
Penfield rteef, ofi Black Rock, is so far com-
pleted as to be nearly on a level with low
water mark. This light-house when com-
pleted will be one of the 'most important
ones on the coast; it is to be built of stone
and similar in style to the one on Two
Brothers Island. '
Tuesday being the sixticth birthda of
Mr. Scoficld, ticket agent at the New ork

BRATTLEBORO, June _2’Z.—The body of
George H. Walker of Amberst,Mass., author
‘of the war dramas,“ Old Flag" and “Home
and Country," was found suspended from a
tree in Asylum meadow yesterday. The
body had probably been there since Friday
afternoon, as he left the American house,
where he boarded, about dinner time that
day, not stopping to eat any dinner, and had
not been seen since. The first of last wee’l
he applied to Mr. Buzzell, contractor fO
building the Brooks Hotel in this city for
work, and Mr. 'Buzzell engaged 111111 for
carpentering. He complained the next day
of lameness, as he was unused to work, and
after resting a day came again, Mr. Buzzell
again set him to work, but In about an hour
he a ain complained that he was so lame he
could not work. A letter found on hIs per-
showed that he premeditated the act, that
he was completely disheartened, and hint-
ed at some woman difiicult . The landlord
at the American house ha noticed that he
was much depressed. but no one anticipated
that he contemplated suicide.

says the. Titusville Herald. One architect
recently completed a design for a barn and
hen house with six bay windows on each.
Carpenters‘now contract only for the bay‘
windows, and throw in the rest of the house.
An American minister writes in one of
the papers: “London has what it calls Sun-
day schools, but they are generally only a
milder form of iu‘quisition. The school of
Dr. Cumming’s Church was without picture
or pleasant sight, and had thirty-seven schol-

The seats are narrow and without backs,
and remind one of the Irishman’s remark on
a fine cemetery at he thought it ‘a very

That magnificent piece of stone work the
fort at the Narrows, which has been fifteen
'ears a—building and has cost two millions,
it is said, will be condemned by the board
of examiners as utterly useless. The guns
will probably be dismounted and placed on

The Mayor of Evansville, Ind, was
obliged to call in the services Of the Mar-
shal to suppress the profanity and obscenity
of one Van Riper, a democratic member of
the Council of that city, at the last meeting.
The latest form of the labor and capitol
conflict is shown by the action of 150 oper-
atives employed in a rolling mill in Newark
Ohio, who determined that they would have
their back pay, and accordingly captured
the President of the company, and only re-
leased him whcn he promised to accede to
their wishes. ‘

at a recent festival.
