WESTPORT.
Thursday Evening of last week, at about
7%, a shower passed; over this. locality of
the most furious Character. It was accom-
panied with Wind and hail, and lasted more
than fifteen minutes. . Great ponderous
clouds were noticed looming up in the north
previous to the breaking forth, and the indi-'
cations were that it would be carried under-
thc influence of the wind, away from us.
. The setting Sun was almost.visible=throiigh
the thin clouds, behind which the wind
whipped and hurled it to the SOuth and OVer
our heads. At thievinstantthe whole heav-
cns assumed a wildiand yellowish Complex-
ion and in agmom‘ent more the rain fell in
torrents with hailstoues of remarkable size,
continuing until in SOme places they were
three inches in depth and did not disappear

Strawberries and onions were much cut,
and cherries where they were ripe came to
the grbund in bushels. It was a-morc seri-
ous storm» than any knownhere for years,
and it is thought that damage has been done
to trees and crops generally. . .
Mr and Mrs F. w, Fellows rind family
sailed for Europe, to be absent several. years .

Much excitement was created along/the
shores of Long Island and .Connecticut,.by
the arrival at City Island, on Monday night
last, of a schooner freighted with , oysters.
The, captain was beset on all sides for infor-
mation as 10' where he had made the haul.
but he was at first silent. He told his in‘
”q'uircrs after awhile that they could have the
information if they were disposed to pay
for it, and they finally consented to give
him $500. to be shown the spot where the
oysters were taken. Having got the money
the captain directed. his clients Off EMOD’S
Neck, as the locality of an oyster bed of im-
mense extent. The oysters were represen-
ted to be equal in flavor‘ and size to any-
thing ever found on Long Island and Jer-
sey shores. For several days the Sound in
the neighborhood of Eaton's Neck was dot-
ted with craft, but up to this date, the “bed”
has not been found ahd the whole thing is
now pronounced a wicked imposition.

CANINE SAGACITY.—-Ml‘. J. S. Trowbridgc,
.of New Canaan,I-ecently lost his wallet, an
Old-fashioned 6 x 9 affair, with $50 in it.
Thinking that he probably dropped it the
night before on the road between his house
and depot he sent his hired man early next
morning to look for it. The man drove to
the depot and near the platform saw a little
dog (which had mysteriously come to Mr.
Trowbridge’s house sometime previously,
and wlu'ch delighted to follow his wags...)

nizing the man made every manifestation of
delight, but would not leave the spot. On
going to him, there 'was the missing pocket
book, and although it had rained during the
night, it was perfectly dry, the little dog hav-
ing protected it by lying upon it all night.

A jolly. good natured, ready-wilted, fair~
haired Scotch-Irishman with sweet German
accent and the grace and politeness of an
old-time . French dancing master, entered
our office recently, introduced himself as
McNamara, and courteously invited us to
mend our ways, at the same time offering
several varieties of Thread' for the purpose.
He then proceeded t6 demonstrate the supe-
riority of the Willistou thread over all the
tamous foreign brands. It sustained one-
fifth greater weight than any other brand,
and the microscope showed it to be wonder-

The Death of Vulluudlgham.
A'Verygeneral sympathy was expressed
for Mr. VALLANDICHAM, whose life was put
in peril by the accidental discharge ”of a pis-
tol in his own hands’ and the subsequent
announcement of his death will be heard
with sorrow. MrNALLANDrenAM’s position
in the Democratic Party has alwaysattract-
ed attention. He was twice in the Ohio
Legislature. For two years he was editor,
and he served in Congress two terms. His
cOurse in Congress was that of a bold and
and pronounced opponent of the War, and
before the people he was a mischievous
, agitator. In 1863 he was arrested for trea-
sonable utterances, and banished to the
South. He escaped to Bermuda, thence to
Canada. In Democratic National Conven-
tions for many years, VALLANDIGHAM has
been conspicuous. His latest political utter-
ance had the merit of novelty and unex-I
peetedness, and placed him in the attitude
of a leader. The loss of VALLANDIGHAM
will be deeply felt by his party. An event-
ful career comes to a most untimely end.
