WESTPORT.
Mr. Luke Wilkins has sold his fine house
and grounds to a gentleman from New York,
for about $15,000, more than twice the sum
paid for them six years ago. He takes in
part payment real estate in Jersey City, to
'which place he proposes to remove soon.
We regret 'to lose so estimable a gentleman
from our midst.
On 'Friday. afternoon the thermometer in-
dicated ,85 degrees. On Saturday morning
at sunrise 48, a most remarkable variation
for June. . ~
The :litliculty relative to the Sa‘ugatuck
draw bridge has been temporarily settled by
Mr. J, Wheeler, who came forward and ad-
vanced money for the payment of Mr. Den-
mead, the tender in charge.
Rev. 1. R. Williams of Christ Church
preached at Greenpoint, N. Y, on Sunday
last. At his residence on Thursday evening
last, a splendid little entertainment was giv~
en, consisting of charades,‘in which several
youiig ladies and gentlemen took part. Some
ability was exhibited in the last piece “ The
Tea Party,” Misses Sarah Coley, Emma and
Jessie Adams, L. Crossman, B. .TntllehN.
'Partrick, M. Jones, and Messrs. Jos.‘ Hyatt,
IGlee. Dickerson and I. Adams participated.‘
Other similar representations are in prospect.
Parents, friends and invited guests were
present. It was given under the auspices of
the Mite Society.
The annual convention of the'Protestant
Episcopal Church assembles at New Haven
this morning. Delegates from both churchés
herewill be represented.
Black fish, in goodly numbers and' size,
may now he caught. The bebt time for a
catch is in the early morn. '
Strawberries are ripe and plenty.
The condition of- Mr. George D. Cable, up
to latest dates remain unchanged.

' Mr. W. G. Dickey, a traveling agent from
Illinois, was taken severely sick, and in a fit
of temporary insanity jumped from a sec-
ond story window, but fortunately broke no
bones. He was in a very critical condition.
but the. authorities took care of him and
there is now hope of his rechvery.
Joseph Dickson, the Stamford poet is still
grinding out verses.
The Yale Glee Club is to give a Concert
in Stamford on the 14th inst.
The Wardeuhas given otficial orders for
the closing of all stores, saloons, &c., on the
Sabbath. -
Dr. J. 8, Dodge, Jr., of the Universalists
church, has been presented With a fine horse
and defiant harness, by his parishioners.
The nuess Pottery recently burned down
is to be rebuilt larger than before.
The “Strand Park,” foot of Atlantic street,
is being fenced in and its surroundings put
in order.
Last week the water was let into the pipes
and came easily through to' the gate at
North street, A hose seventy feet long was
attached at that point and the water thrown
to a distance of seventy—two feet, thus pro-
ving that the pipes are thus far a success, and
that we can ha e water in the upper stories
of most Of on uses.
There is not much demand for houses this
season, and there are more vacant than ever
before. .
The Rev. Dr. Lord and son sailed for En-'
rope on Saturday last. We understand that
the Rev. Dr. Booth, formerly pastor of the
Presbyterian church in this place, was to
sail in the same vessel.
Mr. George Scofield also sailed on Satur-
day, in the steamer Italy. He intends to
make a protracted visit. L‘

It is quite a relief to see that the News is
through running “up and down the ladder.”
A boy named Daniel Torpy recently -re-
ceived severe injuries by falling from a tree.
His recovery is doubtful.
A mad dog was recently 'killed in Danbu-
ry and a mad cat in New Fairfield.
' Lieut. Dickens has been ordered to New-

BRIDGEPORT.
About half-past eight Sunday evening, a
fire broke out in McCoy's livery stable on
Middle street. There were some :40 horses
and a large quantity of hay in the “Ming.
The upper portion of the building was burn-
cd— and the rest in dangerflhough the fire en-
gines succeeded in getting the fire under
control a little after nine o’clock. .
The Bridgeport Sons of Temperance are
increasin‘gtheir membership. After the two
recent murders in liquor saloons it. would
seem as if the whole city might be Induced
to 'oin the order. .
. A. Bartram is preparing to rebuild his
pork packing establishment. '
Thirteen criminals were transported from
Bridgeport jail to Danbury, last week, for
trial. ' .
Another attempt has been made to burg-
larizc Barnum’s residence, but~the faithful
electric alarm frustrated it. .
The application for a Savings Bank in
East Bridgeport has been granted by both
houses of the General Assembly. '
A few gentlemen have departed on the
steam yacht Pioneer, for a trip to Albany
and thence on the raging canal.
The mother of Sylvatlus Cobb, Jr., is
around lecturing on the Laws of Life and
Health.” ‘ .
_ Francis .May was thrown from a wagon
to East Bridgeport, last week, and had an
arm and leg broken. ' '
, The steamer Metis, Capt. Kenney, from
New York for Providence, when between
Falkland Island and Cornfield lightship,
about 12 o’clock on the night of the 2d inst,
collided with. the schooner Merle], Poland,
of and from Portland for Bridgeport, with
lumber. The schooner was struck on the
port quarter, and received considerable
damage, causing her to fill and sink to her
decks. The Metis towed her to the mouth
of New London harbor, and loaned them a
small boat, in place of their own, which was
lost. She will probably be towed to Bridge-
port. The steamer received no damage. -
A man named Allen, Pickles,) of Nor-
walk, came to Bridgeport Vednesday wi
a fine horse and buggy and a few articles 3‘
merchandise that e ofi‘ered * to sell cheap.
Our chief of police got wind of some of his
transactions, and, as they seemed suspicious,
took the matter in hand. Allen had dis-
posed of a splendid lap robe for $9—-wortl‘
three times that amount—also a coat, for a
mere song, and bad a fine anama hat and
other articles of clothing w ich he was try-l
ing to sell. He had also offered the horse
for sale, cheap. After the chief had been on '
his track awhile he accosted him in State
street and made several inquires regarding
the- horse and. buggy, goods &.c.,'which Allen
failed to answer to the satisfaction of Mr.
Marsh, who then informed ,him that JIC
should be obliged to detain him until he was
sure it was all rivht. 'Finding himselfin the
hands of the Cmef of Police, Allen. stated
that he hired the team at Mot-ehonse’s livrey
stable in Norwalk. .Mr. Marsh telegraphed
to Morehouse and received an answer to de-
tain the man and horse both. He did so
and Mr. Moreltouse came over on the even-

to him and were let to Allen, as he stated.
The coat belonged to a churn of Allen’s in
Norwalk. The hat and robe were the prop-
erty of Mr. Beattie, proprietor of the Straw
Hat factory, at Norwalk, for whom Allen
worked. The goods sold were recovered.
A customer had been found for the horse
just as the arrest took place. Allen was ta-
ken back to N orwalk Thursday to answer
for what he had done,'and was trying to
