Our quiet, yet as we think attractive town

ress as well as some of our more ambitious
neighbors; We have quite an accession of
New York business men, and others are,
this spring, buying suburban residences
among us. The number of new houses and
the improved character of the same, With the
advance in real estate for two or three years
past have been truly marvelous. Mr. F.1W.
Bruggerhof, of the old for famed _“Grant
Thornburne" seed store, No. 15 John St. has
completed a most unique and attractive
house, while the great Farina man has made
the rocks and desert'about his house literal-
ly blossom with the rose. Speaking of Mr.
Hecker, I learn that he has just gone into an
extensive real estate operation with? a con-
tingent view to “City Lots,” in the future,
and not the least gratifying fact is the evi-
dence of neighborly good feeling evinced by
your N orwalk Savings Bank in loaning him
the large amount of $15,000 to carry out his
plans. A great many of such institutions are
only interestbd in promoting the welfare of
th err own localities and we are glad to know
that your bank is Willing to advance the
growth and prosperity of sister towns.

One year has passed since the organiza-
tion of the'Noroton Reading Room and Cir.
culating Library Association. Timid con-
servativessaid, it will has failure. Enter-
prise said, we believe that there is intelli-
gence enough in the masses to prefer a well
lighted ‘room, art, and literature, to Winter
evening gatherings around the stOve of a
country store. All reforms move slowly.
It’s been a struggle between refinement and
indifference, but books and papers have
'won. The people support it, and it starts
on another year of its life. They have a
library. of 235 volumes to which will be
.added 100 more this month. They have
also made arrangements withvthe trustees of
Fitch’s Home for the privilege of drawing
books from their library of 2,000 volumes.
They have all the principal pictorials and
magazines. The walls are thickly hung
with the finest engravings and all together
make an attractive room. They have given
a number of public readings this winter and
under their auspices a lecture will be deliv-
ered next Monday evening. The officers
elected for the ensuing year are as follows:

diction of the small islands off her coast does
not apply to Mystic Island, which, although
