PAT’S CONSCIENCE.
After the late civil war was over, one of
the Irish volunteers who lived to return
from the southern battle fields, went to the
priest with a mournfully long face and a. ter:
rible load of sin on his tender conscience,
and began:
“Your riverence I am so troubled in me
conscience, and what shall I do to get even
with it ?"
“And What’s the matter, Pat; pray what
have you been doing that’s so dreadful?
Make a clone breast of it and tell me the
Whole truth.” _ .
“And so' I will, your rivercnce: when I
listed in the war, they sint me just where
they liked, and I found myself In the sarvice
at Fernandina, in Florida; and the naygurs

the holy Catholic church that is there; and
one day, I saw in the street a naygur and he
had on him one of the sacred vistments,

alraid that my duty as a soldier forbid me
to take vengenance on him; but, by the by,
the Christianity got the better of me, and I

The priest imposed a penance suited to
the hole, and Pat went away to repair his

Churches and Brandy-suns.
A Missionary of the American Sunday
School Union in Tennessee, writing of a be-
nighted districtin his field, says, “The great
objection to Sunday schools here is, that in
them the children are taught the Lord’s
Prayer 1- I recently passed through three
counties, Where there are more than forty
churches, but did not hear of more than five
Sunday-schools ; and they were veryfeeble.
I heard more 00811113 for making apple-bran-
dy and peach-brandy than of churches.
“As I was crossing the mountains, I meta
man who very earnestly inquired if I was
the brandy man. I told him I was the Sun-
day-schOol man, looking after the spiritual
and not .the spirituous interests of men. I
learned thathe had'a brandy-still ready to
run, and was looking after the government
officers to grant him license.
“I called. a few days ago, on my way to
lay appointment, upon a very old man, 115
years Of age ;‘ and met another who is father
of 28 children, and another having 24."
Children, dOn’t you think they need Sun-
day-schools in such a country, where chil'
. dren are so many, and mylive' so long;
where there are so: many brandy-stills to
destroy them, and so few Sunday-schools to
save them, and where the churches are
afraid of the Lord’s Prayer ? Won‘t you help
to pull down' the brandy-stills, and set up
the Sunday-schoéolst ’

The people of Ohio have got a new law in
their State with which they are making suc-
cessful battle against the liquor trafic.‘ Be-
lieving that the ‘sale of‘ intoxicating liquors
isthe great and primary cause of intemper-
' ance and its outgrowing evils,‘and knowing
the difficulty of exterminating it, their Leg-
islature determinedto make the liquor deal-
crs responsible, in some m’easure,.for- the in-
jurious results which might flowfroui the
traffic, and so passed an act, which while it
prohibited the sale ofardentspirits to minors
or intoxicated persons, and doutained sever-
al commendably stringent clauses, also in-
cluded the following provision: .
SEC. 3. “Every husband, wife, child, par-
ent, guardian, employer, or other person,
who shall be injured in person, property or
means of support, by, any intoxicated person,
or in consequenCc or such intoxication, hab-
itual or otherwise, shall have a right of' ac-
tion against both the person who sold the
liquor and the landlord who owns the prem.

The Baltimore Episcopal Methodist, in refer-

"Catholic. bishops on the subject, says, “The.
opinion ofihis council derives great weight
from the fact that it is based upon the infor-
matiOn'obtaine'di-iu‘ the confessional'trom one
end of the country to the other. The effect
of these dances upon the mind and“ morals
With'u's is'an inference ; with them it is 0 dis-
closure; and we do not know how its weight
is ob be resisted by the votaries of the fash-

Some reader may cxclaim, in a kind of
lofty contempt, “Fudge l” but we must take
human nature as it is, and from the stand
point of a daughter’s purity, thoughtful par-
ents are invited .to consider the subject, for
it is one of great social importance. _
