STAMFORD .
The sacred concert of Tuesday evening
was a success. Our well known “ Stamford
Glee Club” sang two male quartetts, to the
perfect enjoyment of everybody. Mr. Gib-
son, an organist of great promise, played,
besides the overture, two organ pieces, a
fugue by S. Bach, the difliculties of which
he mastered with perfect ease, and an offer-
toire by Batiste, of extreme brilliancy,
which called forthnn encore, when he play-
ed a very pleasing “ Pastorale” 'by Kullach.
Among the sales recently entered in the
.Town Clerk’s office, we find that Ernest
Hasse, of Yonkers, N. Y., sold to Catherine
F. Meyer, of West Farms, N. Y., a tract of
land on the Cove Road, in the vicinity of
“ Willisville,” for $8,800.
Mr. and Mrs. Whitney and their children,
of Stamford, were recently stricken down,
with “trichina spiralis,” according to the
physicians of the place, after eating some
raw ham. It is hoped the patients will re-
cover.
Some Yale students who disgrace the in-
stitution they are connected with Went to
Stamford last week to spend Sunday and
spent Saturday night in breaking door bells,
carrying 011' gates, removing signs, etc. Their
names are known and it IS said warrants
have been issued for their arrest. '
A man named James Ryan, residing n'ear
the Catholic church, accidentally shot his
thumb 011‘ on Monday evening last and died
on Wednesday night from tetanus or “lo ck
jaw." He leava a wife and three children.
The ladies of St. Andrew’s Sewing Society
hold a sale. of useful and fancy articles and
refreshments, on the afternoon and evening
of Thursday Feb. 16th, at the house of Mr.
George H. .Redding, Summer street. ' '
Friday evening, Feb. 17, has been select-
ed for the grand complimentary soiree to

promises to bathe most elaborately prepar-
ed and most successful held in Stamford for
many years. '
Rev. Mr. Tiffany gave the sixth lecture of
the regular course on Thursday evening.
He presented some graphic and startling
word pictures of that wonderfhl natural
phenomenon the Yosemite valley. It now
becomes our pleasant duty to invite the at-
tention of those who hold season tickets,
and the public generally, to the entertain-
ment promised for Thursday evening, Feb.
16. This, as before announced, is given
gratuitously to those who hold season tick-
ets. Miss. H. L. D. Potter, who has been
engaged to read on the occasion referred to,
has already appeared before scores of culti-
vated audiences in New York, Brooklyn,
and elswhere. -
DAN BURY.
On Saturday evening of last week, Samu-
el Downs laid himself under a shed, being
too full of liquor to see his way home, and
slept there till morning, when he was dis-
covered, in a half frozen condition. Both
feet and several fingers were frozen.
Geo. F. Bailey & Co’s Circus and Menag-
erie, which is'wintering here, are busy pre-
aring for another annual tour, 'and will
cave here about the middle of April' Not
less than $40,000 iscxpendcd each year in
remodelling and reorganizing this extensive
concern.
Washington Division, Sons of Temper-
ance, is in a flourishing condition, eight
candidates being initiated at the meeting
last week, Wednesday evening. _
Business is dull, everybody says the
“times are hard ;” batting the principal
manufacturing business is rather quiet, but
still people fold their hands, and content
themselves with complaining. The town
is full of people looking for work, and many
, of them praying to God that they, will not
.
find it.
- The seats in the Methodist church were
rapidly relet last week. The only difficulty
"that-lobe committee met with, was where to
find sitting room for the people.
Mr. Joel Foster is still confined to the
house from an injury to his knee, inflicted
three weeks ago. It was done by breaking
a small stick across his knee, not by the
blow of a hatchet, and what was supposed
to be an unimportant bruise proves to be a
serious wound.
BRIDGEPORT.
A serious accident occurred on the steam-
er Bridgeport Sunday afternoon about ball
past two o’clock, resulting in' the death of
one of the deck hands named Owen Mc.
Carthy. The boat had-just arrived and was
backing up to the dock when the line that
passed around the stern slipped up over the
rail and caught McCarthy between it anp
the end of the saloon, pressing him very
hard. He _was immediately released by
starting up the boat, but his injuries were
so severe that he died about seven o'clock
in the evening.
Friday one of the joiners at the Naugatuck
shops, named Wm. Diwney, was badly in-
jured by the falling ofa plank.
The Winchester Repeating Arms 00. are
rapidly moving their machinery and work
to New Haven.
STRANGE ANOMALY.—Messrs Smfield do
Barnum are selling wet Dry Goods at very
low rates.

The League Island, New London, Kittery
Island and other proposed navy yards were
discussed'ir. the house, on Friday, when the
naval appropriation bill was up. Mr. Stark-
weather spoke a good word forNew London.
Anxiety is felt by the President and others
at Washington concerning the steamer Ten-
nessee, which carried out the Commissioners
to San Domingo. .
Alittle boy at New Britain, who was
sent by-his father for liquor, one night last
week, could not get in on his return, his
father being to drunk to'answcr his call,
and he was found frozen to death on the door
step in the morning.
The French elections have resulted in a
substantial success for the Conservatives,
few Republicans being electedin the Prov-
inces. .
The extension of the armistice is said to”
be contlngent on the action of the Assem-
bly on the cession of French territory.
The French Generals have had a con-
sultation in Paris. -
A terrible cattle plague has broken out
in Paris.
Numerous marine disasters are reported
on the English coast, and the loss of a
French transport with over 1,200 persons
on board.
The Senate has confirmed the up oint-
ment of H. E. Gates as postmaster at itch-
field, and S. M. Norton at Winsted.
The three Republican members of Con-
gress from this State were all present on
Thursday, and voted in favor of going into
committee to.reach the bill repealing the in-
come tax ; but Mr. Barnum, the Democratic
member from the Fourth Distaict, was
absent, as usual.

vigorous efforts to raise contributions for
the suffering people of France. The com-.

Two new and very elegant sleeping cars
are to be placed in a few davs on the through

L?” The Concord Daily Monitor, of Feb.
4th, has a column sketch of ’Rev. Nathaniel
Bouton, a native of this place, who was set-
tled in that city for 42 years as pastor of the
North church. We make a few extracts :—
For many years his congregation was the
largest in the State, arid his parish one of
the most extensiVe, tcrritorially considered.
In the first twenty-three years of his min-
istry he preached every Sunday but one:
and in the last nineteen years every Sunday
but two, which showao a remarkable degree
of good health. During the forty-two years
he never failed to preach his Anniversary,
Thanksgiving and Fast sermons in his own
church, and during that time he-preachcd at
home and abroad 7,176 sermons, 31 of which
were printed. He received as members of
the church 772 persons, which included
every male member of the church, and 'all
but ten of the female members, at the time
the sermon was preached. ‘
Rev. Dr. Bouton was born in Norwalk,
Conn., June 20, 1799. In the year 1814 he
went into the otiiee of the Remlbll'can Farmer,
published at Bridgeport, Conn., to'lcarn the
trade of printer, where he continued three
years, employed in all departments of the
office, from “devil" to “proof reader." To
his connection with printing business. and
the tastes therein formed, is to be attributed,
no doubt, the desire to become a clergyman,
which he has since so successfully and emi-
nently realized. And his case is not an ex-
ceptionable one of a printer’s exchanging the
“case” and “press” for the “pulpit.” It was
a common saying with a well known printer
of this city, twenty years ago, in summing
up his~experience, that when printers left
the “art preservative of all arts,”. they either
“joined the army, went upon the stage, or
became ministers,”—a statement, however,
which he did not verify when he left the
craft at the age of fifty years, and turned his.
attention to farming and milk marketing
However, printers can point with satisfacl
tion to a long list of able ministers who
spent their youth in printing ofiices, and to
no one with more pride than the honortd
pastor of the North Church for 42 years—a
longer period than the Israelites journeyed
in the wilderness.
After'leaving the printing ofiice, Rev. Dr
Bouton fitted for college at Wilton Academy'
under the instruction of that eminent educa-
tor, Hawley Olmstead, Esq., and graduated
from Yale College in the class _ of 1821, and
from Andover Theological Seminary in 1824.
But we remember that Rev. Dr. Bouton is
still in the harness, doing ministerial service
on Sundays, and agreeable historical work
for the State on the other days of the week,
so we will not say of him to-day the many
pleasant things we have in our mind to say ,
concerning his long life of usefulness, indus-
try and integrity, not only as “Minister” of
the North Church, but as a citizen of Con-
cord. Having passed the allotted three
score years and ten. he is vigorous in health,
and we trust has many years of usefulness
and happiness in store for him.

TO GO TO FLORIDA 1N WINTER.
HAVING for the last: thirty-five years dcvotcd my whole
time and attention to the study of lung diseases and con-
sumption, [feel that I understand fully the course that
ought to be pursued to restore a tolerably bad case of
dlscascd lungs to healthy soundness. The first and most
important step is. for the patient to avoid taking cold; _
1n the best ofall places on this continent for this ur-
pose-.111 winter, is Florida, well down In the State, w cm
the temperature is regular. and not sub cct to such varia-
tions as in more northern latitudes. ’alatka is a slut.
I can recommend. A good hotel is kept there by eter-
man. Last winter I saw several persons there whose
lungs had been badly diseased. but who. under the heal-
ing influence of the climate and my medicines, were get-
ting well. .
One hundred miles farther down the rivcris a point
which I w Id prefer to l’alntka, as the temperature is
more even nd the air dry and bracing. Mellonvlllc and
Enterprise are located there. 1 should give a decided
referenccto Mcllonvlllc: it is two miles from rlvtr or -
like. and it seems almost impossible to take cold there.
The tables in Florida might be better. and patients com-
plain at. times; boot that is a. good sign. as it indicates a
return of appetite : and, when this is the case, they en-
crally increase ill-flesh. and then the lungs must hca .
Jacksonville, Hibernia, Green Cove, and many other
places in various parts of Florida can be safely recom-
mended to consumptlvcsin winter. My reasons for say-
ing so are. that patients are less liable to take cold there
than where there is a. less even temperature: and this
not necessary to say. that. where a consumptive person
exposes himself to frequent colds, he is certain to die
shortly: therefore no 'advlcc iskgo well down into the
State, out of the reac of prevailing cast winds and fogs.

named, will benefit those who are troubled wltlr a torpld
liver, a disordered stomach, dcrnngcd bowels. sore throat,
or cough; boot, for those whose lungs are dlscuscd, a more
