feeling of hatred towards the man for 'his
want of patriotism, his many cruel and ty-

As this country has again become one of
the great family of American Republics,
and will probably soon have a Government
organized in amily with that of the United
States, it must increase in interest to us,
from its proximity to our shores, its vast
territory, nearly three times the area of
Massachusetts, with its rich and varied re-'
sources yet undeveloped, its sparce popula-
tion of only 7 or 8 to the square mile, of a
people so docile and hospitable that you"
may travel among them with as little fear of
harm or ering as in New England; and
its climate, taken as a whole, unsurpassed
in. the tropics, and superior to any part of
the United States. It will, therefore, interest
the people of the United States, to know
what the probabilities are of its being a
stable and respectable Government. Let
not its past historyso prejudice us as to dis-
pair of their success now. The two politi-
cal chiefs, Santana and Baez, who have kept
the country in almost continuous commo-
tion since its separation from Hayti, in 1844,
will never again disturb its repose; the
former being dead, and the latter politically
so. The revolution, now happily at an end,
had the support of nearly all the intelligent
men of the country, the very lien who dis-
tinguished themselres most and who sufi'ered
in tin the late war with Spain. ' They en-
gaged in this last contest to get rid of Baez
on account of his despotic rule and his mal-
admiuistration of the Government, and not
to favor l'y other aspirant for the Presiden-
cy. In order to avoid jealousy, or give
prominence to any one man, the provisional
Government has been organized under a
Triumvirate, who will exercise the execu-
tive power until the national will is ex-
pressed. The country is perfectly tranquil
throughout. In fact, there has been but
little interruption to business at any time,
and but; little fighting. The masses are
easily swayed to one side or the other, byr’
some distinguished chief in whom they have
confided on other occasions; and although
naturally the most harmless and inoffensive
like tigers when they meet a foe. They de-

A terrible accident occurred Monday
night, on the Hudson River Railroad, at

“There She Blows.”
Down on Nantucket Island all the male
inhabitants are seafaring men. They are

weeks. But during these brief intervals
from toil, these hardy sons of the salt sea

when Rev. Mr. Cheerful called upon Mrs.
Bobstay,whose husband, an old Whaler. bad
