ROWAYTON.
The members of the' Baptist church of
this village contemplate having an oyster
supper at the residence of air. Jacob Grant,
on Thursday evening, Feb. 2d, 1871.

The Mechanics’ Library. of this village
perfected their organization on Wednesday
evening, 25th inst, with the following offi-
cers :—Pres., Thos. Bragg; Vice-Pres, J. E.
Milner; Sec’y, Edwin Northrop; Tress,
James Crowther ; Librarian, J. E. Milner, Jr.
This institution is deserving, and should
receive the liberal support, moral and pecu-
iiiary, of the entire community. The books
will be ready for delivery on Saturday eve-
ning next.
GREENWICH.
IIon. Myron L. Mason, formerly of West-
port, who is now residing at River side, has
recently opened a law ofllce in Greenwich.
The Judge is an experienced lawyer, and
will be sure to gain a full share of local
practice.
WESTPORT. .
In last Tuesday’s GAZETTE we stated
that a grand social dance, under favorable
auspices, music, supper, etc., would. take
place at National Hall on that evening. We
take this occasion to say that our report
was inadvertant and premature, for it did
not come off until Friday evening, when a
magnificent afi‘air was the result. We feel-
sorry for those who, reading our announce-
ment, dressed themselves with care and
reached the hall just in time to find them-
selves the victims of misplaced confidence.
They, with the public at large, must have
endorsed that poignant suffering which
anxiety and disappointment always engen-
ders, and we, being the medium through
which it was induced, sympathize, apolo-
gize and beg pardon generally. 1
Up to Saturday, 21st, the winter had been
so open that many thought we might be
favored with little snow, but on the even-
ing of that day it came down in good cam-
est to the depth of several" inches. Again
on Monday and Tuesday, again on Thurs-
day, long to be remembered, and again most
furiously on Saturday night last. During
the whole period the cold was extreme.
Once or twice the themometer indicating
severel degrees below zero. Those who
have wished tor sleighing can now enjoy it
to their hearts’ content.
A large party“ Of ladies and gentlemen,
principally members of the Memorial
church, visited the residence of E. S.Wheel-
er, Sangatuck, and were highly entertained.
Wild ducks have made their appearance,
and quite a number were captured during
the past week. The harbor mouth being
frozen over, sportsmen can operate to good
advantage. Next to turkey, many esteem
the flesh of this bird to be the best.
Draw-tenders are now having an easy
time of. it.
Evory'ice-housc in town has been filled,
and if we mistake not, low prices will be
the rule next summer.
Two deaths occurred within ten minutes
of each other in the household of Joseph
Sherwood, Esq., on Wednesday last, in the
persons of a former wife's mother, and the
esteemed wife of a son. Their respective
funerals took place on Friday and Satur-
day. ' . ,
The quantity of rain falling during the
past six months is remarkably small. Not-
withstanding this the water which was low
in wells, or had entirely disappeared, is, of
its own accord, rising. This shows that
Dame Nature, who often appears negligent
or sleeping, is always in the end true to her-
self.
The Gazn'r'rn’s retrospect has‘ been read/ ’
by many here, and with great interest by
those whose memories go back‘fiftyye'érs.
Jewell and the whole Republican' ticket
_of last year being renominated, there is sat-
isfaction over here. .The next metre will be
for the nomination of a’proper candidate for
Congress.
A lady in this place complains that her
house is infested with rats and mice—that
the latter ~ are troublesome and familiar,
perching on her bureaus and chairs, and of-
ten actually running across her face in the
night while she is sleeping, and asks what
can be done to rid herself of them. We
can only suggest the eating of burnt cheese
before retiring, sleep with the mouth open,
and when a “varmint” presents himself
close on him with a vengence.

BRIDGEPORT.
The schooner Mary A. Ky or ran upon
the rocks off Nor-walk Islan , last week ;
she was got ofi‘ and towed into Bridgeport
for repairs. ,
We learn from,Washington that General
Warren, U. S- Engineer-in-Chief of this
Department, has recommended the deepen-
ing of the channel in Bridgeport harbor to
fourteen feet at low water; also, that it be
made one hundred feet wide, and ' to carry
out this improvement, he recommends an-
appropriation of $140,000. Thus it well be
seen that the efforts of the special committee
have not been unavailing. -
The horse cars run on Sunday in Bridge-
port, as well as in Norwich.
The" strike at the Bridgeport iron works
is ended, the workmen being promised their
usual wages.
In addition to the regular semi-annual di-
vidend, declared by the Housatonic Rail-
road company iu January, another dividend
, of eight per cent. on the preferred stock is
announced, payable February 1st.
A young lad by the name of August Cook
had three fingers of his right hand taken
ofi‘ yesterday, by a drop press at "the brass
shop—Standamd.
DARIEN
The N. Y. Sun thus speaks of the death
of Nathaniel Weed ;—“0n Sunday, 22d inst,
Nathaniel Weed died at Darien,. Conn.
Forty years since, Mr. Weed occupied a
conspicuous position in the mercantile rank
of New York. Prominent among his asso-
ciates we recall the names of Hone, Costar,
Astor, Grinncll, Griswold, Barker, and a
host of other reputable men, whose memories
are held in high, esteem, as being the found-
ers of that credit which has raised our city
to its metropolitan greatness. As president
of the North River and subsequently of the
Ocean Bank, Mr. Weed became widely
known in financial circles as a successful
manager, and is still beloved for his many
kindly acts to the struggling tradesman who
sought his aid and counsel. An unostenta-
tious christian, a sincere friend, an honest
man, has in the fulness ofyears been gather-
ered to his fathers." . ‘

Deming’s sand paper manufactory has
been removed to Bridgeport. .
George Bradley made abad wound in his
foot with an axe last Thursday. Hewas
splitting a stick of wood, when' the tool
glanced,driving the blade into the side of
his foot, at the instep.
Joel Foster, of the firm of Foster Bros ,
builders, inflicted a wound in his knee,with
an axe, Monday morning. Fortunately it
is not a very severe cut. ‘
The borough authorities have voted to
open a street running from Deer Hill aven-
ue to Main street, intersecting the latter
street at a point between the residences of
George Meeker and Philander Comstock.
On Sunday last a touching and beautiful
scene was witnessed in the Methodist
church. Durin the meeting for prayer in
the afternoon, - ev. Mr. Easton, pastor of
the Second Congregational ,church, being
present, was cordially' invited by Rev. Mr.
Hatfield, pastor of the Methodist church, to
participate in the services. Mr. Easton
cheerfully accepted the invitation, and,
though in- feeble health, addressed the con-
gregation in Words most appropriate, and
when he was under, Methodist influence;
and to the fact that he had preached' more
frequently in Methodist pulpits than his
own, and rejoiced to see the good work that
was going forward in their church, and ad-
vised those of his own congregation who
were without hOpc to seek an interest in
Christ at the altar where so man had been
hopefully converted. At the c ose of Mr.
Easton’s remarks, Mr. Hatfield arose and
said that, though he,was not a Congrega-
tionalist, yet he had often preached in their
pulpits, and some Of his most cherished
friends were members of that order. He
was_h'appy to meet his brother. He loved
Christians of every name, and desired to
see greater union among all who loved the
Lord Jesus Christ. Mr. Hatfield then gave
the right hand of Christian fellowship to
Mr. Easton. He regretted that ill health
compelled him to relinquish his labors in
this place, but hoped that he would soon
return and long live to be a blessing to his
people. ”
We regret to learn that Mr. F. S. Wild-
man met with a serious accident on Friday
evening, by falling down a flight of stairs
in his own house. Mr. Wildman, in conse-
quence of an accident some two- or three
years ago, has been obliged to walk with a
crutch, and the fall will probably be the
means of confining him to the house for a
number of weeks.

TO GO TO FLORIDA IN YVINTER.
HAVING for the last thirty-five years devoted my whole
time and attention to the study of lung diseases and com
sumptlon, I feel that I understand fully tho course that
ought to be pursued to restore a tolerably bad case of
diseased lungs to healthy soundness. The first and most
imgortant step is. for the patient to avoid taking cold;
an the best of all places on this continent for this pur-
pose, in winter, is Florida, well down in the State, W cm
he temperature is regular, and not sub ect to such varia-
tions as in more northern latitudes. ’alatka Isa olnt
I can recommend. A good hotel is kept there by eter-
man. Last winter I saw several persons there whose
lungs had been badly diseased, but who. under the heal-
iéi‘g nfiuenee of the climate and my medicines, were get-
g well. .
- One hundred miles farther down the ,rlverls a polnt
which] would prefer to Palatka, as the temperature is
more even and the air dry and bracing. Mellonville and
Enterprise are locAted there. I should give a decided
reference to Mellouvllle: it is two miles from river or
fake, and it seems almost impossible to take cold there.
The tables in Florida might be better, and atlcnts oom-
plain at times; but that is a. good sign, as l indicates a
return of appetite: and, when this is the case, they on-
crally increase in fleshcand then the lungs must hea . -
J ac ville, Hibernia, Green Cove, and many other
placesin various parts of Florida can be safely recom-
mended to consumptives in winter. My reasons for say-
ing so are, that patients are less liable to take cold there
than where there is a less oven temperature: and it is
not necessary to say, that, where a consumptive person
exposes himself to frequent colds, he is certain to die
shortly: therefore mi}; advlco is, go well down into the
State, out of the rose of prevailing east winds and fogs.
Jacksonville, or almost any‘othcr of the loculltics I have
named,will benefit those who are troubled with a torpid
liver, a disordered stomach, deranged bowels, sore throat,
or cough; but for those whose lungs are diseased, a more
southern point is earnestly recommended. .
For fifteen years pglor to 1869, I was rofcsslonally in
New York, Boston, altlmorc. and l’ ladelphla every
week, where I saw and examined on an average five
hundred patients aweek. Apractice so extensive, cm-
braclng every possible base of lung disease, has cnalzlcd
me to understand the (1 sense fully; and hence my caution
in regard to taking cold. A person may take vast unmi-
ties of " Schenck's Pulmonic S p, Seaweed Ton c, and
Mandrake Pills,“ and yet die 1 he does not avoid taking
cold. _ -
In Florida, nearly everybody is using Schenck‘s Man-
drake Pllls; for the climate is more lkely to produce
- bllious habits than more northern latitudes. It is a well-
establlshed fact, that natives of Florida. rarely die of con-
sumption, especially those of the southern part. 0n the
other hand, in New England, one-third at least of tho
opulatlon dle of this terrible disease. In the Middle
States, it does not prevail so largely; stlll there are many
thousands of cases there. What a vast percentage of
life would be saved lfconsnmptivcs were as easily alarm-
\lct fever, small-pox, &c.l but they are not: the take
what they term a. little cold, whlc l the arc cre ulous
enough to believe will wear off in a few at '3. They pay
no attentionto it; and-hence it lays the oundation for
another and another still, until the lungs are diseased be-
yond all hope of cure.
I M advice to persons whose lungs are afi'cctod, even
slig tly, is to layinastock ofSchcnck's I'iilmonlc S 'rup,
Schcnck's Seaweed Tonic, and Schcnck's Mandrake 'llls,
and go to Florida. I recommend these particular Inf/ll-
clnes, because I am thoroughly acquainted with their
action. I know, that, where they are used in strict nc—
cordancc with my directions, they will do the work that
is required. This accomplished, nature will do the rest.
The physician who prescribes for cold, cough, or night
sweats and then advises the patient to walk or ride out
every day, will be sure to have a corpse on his hands
before long.
My plan is,

provided he avoids taking cold.
- Now, there are many consumptlves who have not the
means to go to Florida. The question may be asked, Is
there no hope for such ? Certainly there is. My advice
to such is, and ever has been, to stayin a warm room
during the winter, with a temperature of about seventy
degrees, which should be kc t regularly at. that. point b

down as much as his strength will crmlc in or or to
keep up a healthy circulation of the b cod. I have cured
thousands by this system and can do so again. Con-

sued. Tho fact stands undisputed on record that

who has been rescued from the very jaws of death by their

So far as the Mandrake Pills are concerned, everybody
should keep a suppl of them on hand. They act on the
liver better than ca omel, and leave none of its hurtful
effects behind. In fact, they are excellent in all cases
where o purgatlve medicine is required. If you have
partaken too freely of fruit,and diarrhoea ensues, a dose
of the Mandrakes will cure you. If you are subject to
sick headache, take a dose of the Maudrakes, and they
will rclicvc you in two hours. If you would obviate the
effect on; change of water, or the too frcc indulgence in
fruit, take one of the Mandrukcs every night, and you
may then drink water, and cat: water melons, pears, ap-
ples, plums, peaches, or corn, without thc risk of being
