lonely, level, woody country. I was certain

lieve our cavalry 'had passed this way.
I think I had proceeded, on a steady gul-
lop, for half an hour, when I approached a
clear, quiet stream, and I stopped my- horse
io let hiul drink; but I had no sooner
brought him to a stand than Twas startled
by the report of a rifle, and the singing of a
bullet past my-head. llooked up, and saw
a line Of earthworks, along the base Of a
slight elevation in the road in front. It was
a picket line, for behind it, on the brow' of
the bill, I could distinguish a well-built
breastwork, mounted with guns that com-
manded the road. I had no doubt it was a
Union camp, and I waved my handkerchief
in token of peace and goodfellowship. But
my friendly sentiments were not reciprocat-
ed; another shot, and still another being
fired, with an apparent evil intent. I liur-_
ried Jesse through the brook and urged him
forward, waving my handkerchief, and
shouting that Iwas a Union man and a
friend. How foolish my blind confidence in
that negro seems to me now i He had di-
rected me upon a road that my reason at
‘ any moment, would have told me was
wrong, and I was now rushing headlong in-
to the camp of the enemy. My- delusion
was dispelled, none too early, by a volley
from the picket line, followed by the imme-
diate retreat of a dozen graybacks up the
commenczda rapid retreat. Another volley
from the hilltop followed us, but we escaped
unharmed. '
I settled myself in the saddle and gave
J case his head. I expected to be pursued
but not overtaken. My only fear was in be-
ing intercepted by some roving band of reb-
’ el cavalry. These fears were soon realized.
We had scarcely gone a mile before Jesse’s
quick ear detected their approach. He
slackencd liis pace. I could hear nothing,
yet I knew the crisis had come. I searched
along the roadside for some place of escape
into the thick woods, but an impenetrable
morass lined the road on either side. Jes-
se’s tread was as noiseless as a pauthcr's and
his quick eyes pierced forward into the dusky
twilight. Turning a gentle curve we met
them, hardly filly paces from us. He did
not wait to feel the bridle, but turned, quick-
er than a weaver’s shuttle, and flew back
down the road. I knew it was a hopeless
race. No feat of speed could save us both.
My Only hope of escape was in abandoning
my most faithful friend. I leaned forward
and kissed his princely neck, and then loos-
ening my feet from the siirrups I prepared
to spring. We were descending toward the
stream, and the time had come to part. I
' looked back, the pursuers were not in sight,
I checked the gait Of my faithful steed and-
listened—ihey were just behind. I leaped
to the'grouild, and, waving my hand, spoke
the farewell wOrd—ihe one word “Go.” He
bounded forward, and I sprang into the
thick woods. A moment latter the rebel
troop came dashing by. '
All night long I wandered in the swamps,
working my way slowly eastward, guided
by the light of the moon. With the dawn
of day. I climbed a tree and looked out
toward the rising morning. A mile away
the trees looked larger anti the land seemed
higher. Weary, wet, and hungry, I crept
along, much of the. time to my waist in the
water, and never on dry land. I had no
guide but the opening day, all about me be-
ing an unbroken wilderness. In an hour I
reached a grassy knoll. I crawled to the
top, and lying down I fell asleep. I could
have slept but a few minutes when the'ris-
ing sun, shining full in'my face, awoke me.
I again climbed a tree and looked about.
Before me was a rolling, fertile country. I
could see no road, but a half mile lo the
southeast was a large house that must be
near some highway. I descended and
started with joyful steps towards the place.
A few rods brought me into a neglected
farm road, leading due'east. I walked rap-
idly down this path, my heart filled with
hope of deliverance.
A cheerihl stream crossed the way, and I
stopped to drink and to bathe. As I was
rising to resume my journey,a stifledgroan,
proceeding from behind a neighboring tree,
startled .me. I hastened to the spot, and
there, lying upon his side, his head resting
upon his knapsack, was John Redan. ' The
hand of death was already upon his heart.
He looked atme entreatingly, but could not
speak. I unbuttoned his coat, that he might
breathe more easily, and discovered a slip
of paper hearing this memorandum: “ John
Redan, 20ih Mass, died with cramp in the
bowels.” I ran to the house to try to get
some stimulant to revive the brave boy and
restore him, if possible, to life; but the in
males, if there were any, refused to admit

A. T. Smmr’s Gran—A. T. Stewart’s
enterprise on the Hempstead Plains is rap-
idly assuming defined proportions. Since
the commencement of the work in June
last, 30 miles of streets have been graded,
and 00 miles Of fences have been built. The
city runs from north to south 10 miles, and
is 2% miles in width. Twelve thousand
maple trees, from 12 to 14 feet in height, are
growing on the streets and avenues. The
city is now ready for building. The blocks
are 500 feet wide, and from 800 to 1,200 feet
long, the lots will be 250 feet square. - The
cost of each house will be from $3,000 to
$10,000. Twenty houses will be put up this
season, all placed in conformity with the
general rule, 70 feet from the street. A large
fire-proof hotel and a handsome railroad
station are to be immediately erected in the
center Ofibe city. The Flushing Railroad
will have another track completed. by the
first of July on the road which will pass
through the city. The extension to Farm-
on the first of October. In connection with
the railroad, there will be a line Of ferry-
boais from Hunter’s Point to New York. A,
trip to the new city will occupy about 50 ‘
