PAIRFIELD COUNTY ITEMS.

DARIEN.

That enterprising firm, Messrs. C. S. & W.
8. Whitney. have finished the cellar wall of
their new store, on the corner of Main st.
and Mansfield avenue. The second story is

. to be completed as a public hall; a conven-
ience so much needed in Darlen.’ The Da-
rien Division No. 82, S. of T., propose to
hire this hall for. one night in the week and
furnish it with suitable furniture, including
a piano, that'lhey may provide for their in-
creasing strength and ”usefulness; ,

At the special town meeting held Monday,
Dec. llth, four new streets were voted, and
also the widening of an old one. As nearly

 

 

 

all the land for-these improvements is do-_

listed by the owners, the town of Daricn
will reap immense advantages at it very
small cost comparatively.

The subscriptions towards the plank walk
extending from the end of the present walk

to the Darien Seminary, is progressing .fa.._
vorably, half the amount required being

of the friends of this valuable improvement
to complete the subscription and have the

, The ladies of Christ church are announced
to hold a fair and festival at National Hall,
on Thursday evening of .' this week. During
the early part of the evening the children of
the parish will be entertained with is Christ-
mas tree. Everybody is invited and a fine
time may be looked for. _ ~ '

The members of both Episcopal churches
are busily engaged in getting up evergreen
decorations for the approaching festival of
Christmas. A feature at Memorial church
‘wiil be a fine arch near the chance], of elab-
eorate ecclesiastical design and fini:h. '

space in your columns to set before the pub-
lic of N orwalk the sentiments of our people
who worship at the Town Hall. Many and
great have been the disadvantages and dis-
couragements with which, as a body, they
have had to contend for some time in the
past; and though their fears of the future
are many, yet. like " good men and true,"
they do all they can to promote-the cause of
Zion and to maintain her banner. They de-
sire that I should express their thanks to
the gentlemen, through whose influence
they, have had permission to worship in the
Ha for so many years, and beg a continua-
tion of that favor until their own “Vine and
Fig-tree” be planted. We cannot say when

this will be, for our numbers are few, bill
we are glad to say the are a willing few,
and the efforts that are eing put forth be-
speak success, though it be far in the future.
Indeed, we are rather pleased with their
earn. st resolutions, and have no occasion
to be ashamed of their endeavors, for none
of them are id'e, and “they do what they
can.” Our noble women are zealous and
untiring, working with their hands b night
and by day, and have, by their in uence,
drawn a goodly number of young persons
togetht r, who form our “serving circle,” and
these all, joining hearts and hands, “ work
together for good.” But the work is too
great," and'the burden too heavy ; their ener-
gies are overtaxed, and must soon lie £1.08.
Irate unless‘time'l aid be imparted. ‘ hey
therefore cry for elp, and appeal to the la-
dies and gentlemen of Norwalk, in whose
kindness and sympathy they seem to have
confidence; they solicit your sympathy;
they beg your aid. -Will you not strengthen
thcir hands 1’ And will not some gentleman
“lay up for himself treasure in heaven’.’ by
dedicating a piece of his land to the cause
of Christianity, and thus enable us to plant
our banner in the Spring'of the next year?
Will not the Christians of the various de-
nominations give liberally of their substance
and thus help us ‘to advance? We trust
they will, for the set time to favor Zion has
come.

roughs. Henry Hall, Jr., was garroted on
Monday evening of last week by two men

$200, and has not been apprehended.

Miss Lottie Fowler, the business medium,
who was so effectually ‘sold’ by her ‘agcnt’
Sunday evening, called at the Police Station
to see what could be done to capture her

deceiver, and while there, was informed
that the city authorities would be happy to
secure his apprehension. if the could only
ascertain his whereabouts; an she was re-
quested to resort to her clairvoyant powers
to put them on the track. She has not suc-
