There is a whole history in the following
“plain,"unvarnished ta " of the rise, pro-
gress and failure of a ewYork journal,
which we commend to the careful attention
of those who have an itching to become
newspaper publishers, in the full con-
sciousness that to them has been committed
the rest secret of success in joualism. This
simp e story is an epitome of the experience
of hundreds ofearnest and able men who
hive wastedtheir energies and their means
in newspaper enterprises—the most facinat-
ing and deceptive of ell the business “ well-

And now we have another failure of this
kind even more conclusive than the above.
The noted “Brie ” Pomeroy made about-
‘8200,000 in publishing the infamous “La
Crosse Democrat,” and then became ambi-
tious of printing a daily in Ndw York. ‘He
started the semiodecent “ Democrat,” and
expected to take the lead-immediately. He
did not meet with the success he expected,
butheld on like a good fellow until a week
or two since, when it was announced that
he had '_‘ sold ’3 the paper, and now common
report says that he “ sunk " about his entire
fortune in his effort to build it up. ‘

THIS is to certify that the undersigned, Christian
Swartz, of Norwalk, in Fairfield County, State
of Connecticut, and Reed Haviland, of Rid etleld, in
said county and State, have formed a Lim ted Part-
nershi for the purpose of carrying on at said Nor-
walk t e business of manufacturing and selling Ci-
gars, and dealing in Tobacco and Smokin Goods
generally, at wholesale and Retail, under t e part-
nership name of C. SWABTZ lb 00.
Said artnership is to commence the second day of
Novem r, 1870, and in to cease on the first day of
May A. D. 1873.
Said Christian Swartz is the general artner
authorized to sign the partnership name an trans-
act the business of the artnership.
Said Reed Haviland the special sinner, and has
furnished a capital of Three thousan Dollars.
