Avenersble divine of this place recently paid a visit
to friends in Delaware. , Since hislreturn he received
the-following lines, written by a young Quakeress
in Wilmington :—

How GEN. Bunsen): Gov m'ro Puts.
—The follovving interesting and graphic
account of the way in which General Burn-
side accomplished his now famous trip, in
the character of a pacificator, from the
Prussian headquarters, at Versailles, to Gen-
eral Trochu in Paris, is supplied by a young
American lady, lately a resident of the
French capital: '

“ I suppose you know that Mr. Paul 8.
Forbes went with General Burnside on his
mission to Paris, in the capacity of General
Buruside‘s aid. He has just sent us a very
interesting letter, giving us the particulars
of his trip. They were two weeks in get-
tingto the Prussian headquarters at Ver-

_ sailies from Boulogne, being obliged to
make many detou‘rs and _to travel most of
the way in post-chaises of the queerest char-
acter, dragged out of the dusty corners of
stables where they had been forgotten for
years. They were kindly received at Ver-
sailles, and, afier an infinite deal of pour
parleure, finally obtained permission to visit
Paris and see what could be done. They
were blindfolded when the. moment came
for leaving, and accompanied by an officer
waving a white flag, while on one side of
them rode artrumpeter, blowing lustily thorn
time to time. In this way they advanced as
far as Longchamps (about ,five miles from
Paris,) where they were stopped rather un-
pleasantly, eight shots being fired at them
in rapid succession! Their trumpeter
sounded his trumpet and their ofiicer waved
his flag. Mr. Forbes, who has seen all sorts
of things, ‘ thorn China to Peru,’ as the poet
says, declares that the next fifteen minutes
were very solemn as they waited in the
death-like stillness for the answering trum-
pet. At last it sounded, and then the French
came out of their entrenchments and escort-
ed them into Paris. No news had been re
ceived in the great ‘cityfrom without for a
whole fortnight. Everybody and, anybody
fiocked around them, and you can feincy
what lions they were. They were asked If
Bazaine was not marching to relieve'the
capital, and in fact, Mr. Forbes Says itwas
strange '10 find. how little they. knew of
what was going on or likely to happen.—
Atter staying in Paris two days, they were
permitted to leave again, and went ~bacl_r_'_'to
Versailles to the Prussian headquarters,
where they communicated such results as
there were of their negotiation, and had the
honor of dining with the Crown Prince of
Prussia." ‘ '

Planting ' Fruit Trees.

One of the great comforts of a home is
the fruit grown on every homestead. ,_We
. hear of persons almost everywhere mourn-
ing the want of fruit, particularly in this
section of country and many other places,
as if there was no remedy. But how came
the East and North so. supplied with it 1—
Did the trees grow of their own accord i
Verily, nay ;' but those who went before us
labored to secure fiuit for themselves and
their posterity. Our orchards are shame-

 

fully neglected. We have a fertile virgin ‘
soil; well adapted to the bardier kinds of _’
frnit, such as apples, pears, plums and cher— :

ries. But to have them speedily, we must
plant them speedily—reflect andgo to work.
We need nbt wait till we can plant out a
large orchard, but get a few trees, ifno‘ more,
and set them out with great care—for time
spent in planting a tree well is not lost; and
the next year get a few more; and so on
year after year, as each is able.

There are many reasons why we should
begin at once. Let not next spring pass
without a large addition to the fruit trees-—
everywhere possible, on every farm, yard
or lawn. Who plants an‘ apple tree makes
provision against life’s rainy days, against
loss of health, misfortune in business and

'old age: also, you will keep the doctor
away from your children and yourself. The
planted fruit tree will be a beantifirl minis
ter to the owner’s profit, improvement,
health and happiness. It will stand sentinel
over his dwelling through winters of adver-
sity, when summer friends have fled. While
its master is sleeping the tree will be grow-
ing. It will be industrious for him through
all seasons, ‘cOnverting air and earth and
water into shadow for his footsteps, perfume
for his parlor, food for. his table, fuel for his
hearth and timber for his use. It will serve
him contentedly through life, and minister
to his wants when life is ended. I

.Great care is needed in selecting. Many

kinds that flourish- Well‘in‘ other placesiper- -

ish here, exposed to our severe climate. Se-
lect the harder kind from nurseries located
as far North as you can get them. Get good

truit,,thoug'h you get but a few treesrset'
them with care, and use proper efforts to
have them protected fi-om‘ cattle, rats, mice, f
and rabbits; and y'Ou may spwdily have your '

man too frequently makes .it to lie in the

result. Let a man attain’ to a certain posi-‘

tion, the world does not much concern it-

self as to the how ;, it accepts the fact, and:

promotes him to “4 great honor ” in its es-
teem. There are' his houses,and lands, and
servants, and equipsge's; and in view of
these stubborn‘bnt 'fascinating'facts,—unless '
there has been something. very fiagrant,—we
are by no means critical as to the manner’
iuwhich they have come. But God is very

critical’as to the manner in which they have1

come. It is just there that all the Divine
criticism takes place. He does not look at
the result at all. It is on the process by.
which, this result has been reached that He
fixes His righteous and omnlcient eye. The
honor or the dishonor is all there ; and so it
may happen that a man is really sinking
every step he is rising-sinking in God’s es-
timatiom‘just as he is rising in man’s—and
by the time that the 'world' has promoted
. him to “ great honor " he may have so at-
terly'ruined himself as i moral being, so ut-
terly, destroy the sensibilities of his soul,and
made: himself so dead to everything but
wOrldly‘cOnsideraitions,'that he is a rotten
branch in moment of God, roady to be
broken ‘01! and cast .into the fire: Let us
take the lesson home to our, hearts; there
can‘be no true honor which does not come
in an honorable way. - “ Thou dcsirest truth
in the inward parts,” and the honor which
cornea at the expense of truth, of justice,
.of honesty, of sacred obligations of any
kind, is of the devil’s Coming, not of God's,
and they who follow such a course will see
the dark image and superscription upon it
by and by, when God reckons with them,
and they find the wages‘of sin is, not honor,
