[The emission, by the compositor, of an
entire page of manuscript in the following
Communication which was printed in our
last, made nonsense of the whole, and we
reprint it this week in a corrected form.
Having made a thorough change in the
working force of our ofilcc we hope to be
less annoyed with the blunders of compos-
itors in the future—Ens. GAZETTE]
The Concert on the new organ of the Con-
gregational Church, Darien, by Mr. Alex. S.
Gibson, who was assisted by the Norwalk
Choral Union under his direction, took pluCe
as'adverlised, on Wednesday evening last.
Although the weather did not prove deci-
dedly unpleasant, the evening was not pro-
pitious, and the audience not as large as an-
der other circumstances undoubtedly
would have been the case. There was, how-
ever.a very respectable number present to
enjoy the excellent music,"ahd flowers with
which the church was handsomely decora-
ted, and the entertainment passed off most
agreeably, " ' ' "
The very attractive programme arranged
by :Mr. 'Gibso’h,was received "with hearty ap-
plause. The selection from Mendelssohu’s
“Sonata 6," the “Overture William Tell," the
“Prelude lo-llie Fugue in G,op 37,no. 2" (Men-
delssohn),the beautiful “Reverie and Roman-
zc by Schumann," and the “Offertoire de St.
Cecile by Batiste," were the special favorites.
In the selections from Farmer's Mass in
B flat, the “El Incarnatus est"and “Et Resur-
rexit,’?..wcrc‘ given by the Choral Union,with
flue effect; _3 and in the sweet “Donna nobis
pacéih,” Miss Byxbee sang with excellent
tastethe "exquisite solo. '
, The Madrigals were rendered in spirited
-~ style, and were deservedly applauded.
Mr. Gibson and the Choral Union merit
the warmest thanks of every one in Da-
rien interested in a cultivation of a taste
for good music, in thus affording so unusual
an opportunity for its enjoyment. The un-
fortunate people who were so unhappy as
to be deprived of sharing the pleasure. of the
evening certainly deserve commisseration
and condolence. The organ, built one year
since, by Johnson, Wcstfield, Mass, is un-
surpassed in its peculiar excellence, and has
been pronounced by competent judges to
fully equal, in proportion to its num-
ber of stops, the large organs built
by the same house, which have gained
such celebrity all over the United States.
All who listened to its sweet harmonics in-
voked by the skill of the accomplished or-
ganist, on Wednesday evening, could not
fail to notice the purity and brilliancy of its
tones.
One pleasant feature of the entertainment
was the introduction of Miss H. L. D. Pot-
ter, the well-known elocutionisi, who at the
request of some ‘friends, repeated 9. little
poem called “ May Days, ” and on being
warmly encored responded with reciting
“Barbara Freitche,” to the manifest delight of
the audience. ‘ The real dramatic talent
possessed by Miss Potter, together with her
pleasing address, cannot fail to ensure her a
warm raception with any audience who
may be so fortunate as to enjoy one of her
“Evenings with the Poets."
Sunny Booms.
Every woman is wise enough and careful
enough to secure for her house-plants every
bit of availableshnshihe during the cold
winter months. Great care is taken to get
a southern exposure for them. Indeed, if
one can secure no other than a north win-
dow for her plants, she has too much love
for these unconscious, animate things to
keep theui’ at all. She would rather leave
them out in the cold to die outright, than to
linger out a martyr existence iii the shade.
Folks necd sunshine quite as much as
plants do. Men and women who have a
ib’lrdegree of strength and the use of their
legs,“ can” get out into the world and get a
glimpse of the sunshine now and then, and
if they choose to do so, let them live in
rooms with only a northern exposure; but
if it is possible, let us secure rooms into
whichievery raylof sunshine that falls in
winter may enter, for the little babies who
are shut up in the house, invalids who can-
not leave their rooms, and aged people who
are too infirm to get'out of doors. Let us
reflect for a moment that these classes of
persons, ifkept in rooms with only nortl.
windows, will suffer just as much from the
absence of sunshine as green, growing
plants would do in the same rooms, and
their suffering is of account in proportion
as a human being is better than a geranium
or a fuchsia. Everybody knows how a
' bright, sunny day in winter gladdens every
one who is situated so as to enjoy it. Let
us make some sacrifices, if need be, in order
to give the fecblerones their measure of
