The bronze statue of Abraham Lincoln
which has been erected in Union Square,
New York, opposite the equestrian siatueot
Washington, is ajust and appropriate trib-
utc to the departed preserver of the, Union,
whose name, like that of Washington, Will
be forever coupled with the very ex1stence
of the freedom and happiness which we en-
posterity. The base of the monument is
hewn from the largest stone ever quarried in
America. It we' hs over seventeen tons.
..Its diameter is fteen. feet, and iii circum-
fereuce forty-five. ,Two other stones are laid
one over the other upon its base, and these
complete the pedestal. The} height of the
pedestal is twenty-four feet. The statue is
nearly twice the average height of a man,
measures a little over eleven feet, and weighs
nearly three thousand pound. .Around the
upper. stone a wreath ofstars is cut, repre-
senting each State in the Union. The statue
is a faithful portraiture of the deceased
President. He is attired in citizen’s clothes,
over which a loose cloak is thrown in grace-
ful folds. The features of the familiar face
are accurately defined. In his left hand he
holds the proclamation of emancipation.

Eccentricity of Genius.
Vivier, the celebrated horn player, is one
of those men of whom anecdotes are told—-
an eccentric, insisting upon having his one
way, and his own way being whimSically
peculiar. '
In England he made a great sensation
with his first concert, and invitations to play
at rivate parties were a necessary sequent.
n the day after, accordinglyn a noble
lord called upon the artist, and givrng a pull
to his .cravat in theEnglish fashion Of salute,
he said, with his hat on, in bad French—
“You must come to-morrow evening, and

Uivier looked steadily at the nobleman
and said, with a significant gesture—“Take

it in the better way I have described to you,

The Englishman, evidently very angry,
repeated the invitation as directed.

treating a delicate subject, ”said Viyier; “I
should have made no bargain in advance,
and should have left it to the discretion of
