New Brunswick to Mollie.

In our last we wrote of the homogenous
peoplei-of the Provinces, and not» heteroge-
nous, as the ingeniuously stupid compositor
made us say. No one characteristic of the
peoplewithwhom you mix. more strongly
impresses itself upon the .Ytinkee’s mind
than the strong and all-pervading desire
these people have for annexation. There is
a business and. commercial reason for this,
with the'ad'ditiOn Bf a‘c'onstant social inter-
mixture, intermarriage and intermigration
and immigration. The people of Maine and
Boston, however, have long enjoyed the mo-
uopoly oi'thls social relationship. But the
“blue Itosu‘s” are sharp and Yankeeized
enough to‘sec their pecuniary advantage in
a gowrnuwntal union with our people.
There are abundant and good reasons, loo,
why this would be ot‘advantage to us, that
do not exist at all, in the case of the Cana-
das. The completion of the European and
North, American Railroad, which is relied
upon next season, will give us a continuous

- --line-ot' railway from Halifax to San Fran-

cisco, and bind us to these Provinces with
the commercial bands of iron rails. ,That
completed, we can take the cars at'our dc—
pot and land in St. Johns, Shediac, or Hali—
but by rail. Indeed, it is in contemplation
to continue the line to some point on Cape
Breton, from whence the steamship passage
may be made to Europe in five days.

From St. Johns to the eastward, a mag-
nificent. and tnost enjoyable route is the Eu-
ropean R. R. to Shediae. At Moncton, a lit-
tle this side of Shediac, is a narrow frith
where the tides rise and fall sirty feet, and
give the beholder a new, sensational idea of
the movements of old ocean “on his trav-
els.” From Shediac, therein a good ferry
steamer ready to transport you to Char-
lottetown the chief city of Prince Edward’s
Island; and here let us premise, thatnature
and climate and all surroundings have com-

,bined to make this one of the most delight—
ful spots for the summer tourist, on the
American continent. Gen. Eckert, Supt. of

7 the Western Union. 'l‘elegraph Co., and
whom we met. at St. Johns, remarked that
the United States ought. to purchase the
whole of Prince Edward’s Island, for a hos-
pital for Yankee invalids. The Gulf stream

_ :_ makes it's’elimatc uniform-and genial, While

there is enough of scat-breeze to render it
cool and bracing. It is filled with fresh wa-
ter streams and lakes abounding in trout
(which a re not all fished otIt)—and which
are soplen‘tiful that herring are substituted
for them as a rarity. If the tourist does not
wish to go down to Halifax, which may be
done by rail, water and stage, he can go on
up to Pictou and here again take a fine
oceanusteamer up the Baygand around into
them-oath ct‘lthc St Lawrence V and thence
home via, Quebec, Montreal, Lake Cham-
plain and North River. Our own course
was a direct return to Mt. Desert, that the
Izaak \Valton ribting in the youngsters
might have full scope. From St. J olms a

We had a most dclightfuLday’s sail of it, the
ocean being unusually smooth, and the bold,
ragged and rugged cohstin' full view, except
where the dense ril‘ts of fog blew across and
cut off Our view. We'reached St. Andrews

iciled‘ at the Kennedy House, a quiet, un-
pretentious ‘It‘ostelry. Our first visit here
was to the .British Post otlice, where the
firs‘t’éopy'ot' the old and ever dear GAZETTE

I ' responded to our call. Letters from “home,”

and information (if “all’s well," gave a zest
to our first visit to this venerable, pretty,

yetapparentlyjint'shed town. The place is
-:_ ’_.‘ regularly laid out in exact: squares, like our

new pararie villages and cities, and in form-
er years‘was a seaport of vast wealth and
shipping and ship-building importance. The

place possessed ‘a' “ collateral ” interest as

" having been the birth-place of our better-
half. Our arrival was soon heralded among
cousins, aunts, uncles and old “friends of

» the family," until we found ourselves the
head centre of quite a live company. The
placeglms n_o municipal government, altho’
'ndmbei'iiig eight or nine thousand inhabit-
ants, There is no police officer and no can-
stable; :ind yet all the people are law—abid—
ing, orderly and quiet. There is one engine,
manned by nvolnnteer company of citizens,
water . cisterns at’convenient 1 intervals,
which with repairs of side walks and roads
are .asses1sedj hpbn- all the :eitizens, townwise.

{I ~Thus their local taxation is marvelously

small, and the same as it was in our provin-
cial districts aquarter _of ‘a century ago. The
cars run to W oodstock and connect with the
Europédfi Land North American road at M’-
Adam J auction. We saw no town offering
so many attractions to any one of limited
means, who Inight desire to spend a summer
abroad with comfort, cheaper than they could
possibly remain and live at home. The v11-
--lagc is but two and a half - miles from the

Bay, from “hence, we are sorry to say, the
honest yeomcn of Maine, will sail overtheir
boats to buy the best Scotch and Irish whis-
ky at a quarter a bottle, and the purest and
best of ' brandies for a dollar. A comforta-
ble and even genteel residence may here be
bought'for five hundred . dollars, and the
best et‘hotcl board obtained for fifty cents
per. day. .Within a year . after annexation
shall have taken place all these prices will
have doubled. The waters of the bay abound

‘f lingg'tle'nng shell fish, and while the resi-

dcnts are mainly the remnants of old and
substantial families, there need be and is no
pinching poverty to be seen anywhere.
From St. Andrews we took a clipper over
to Robinstown, on the Maine shore. Our
clipper Capt. was a resolute Maine democrat
who had sealed his democracy by the loss of

borrowed from hitn. We could not discover

,__ 'that this‘destruction had confirmed his wa-

vering faith in potent democracy, though
his martyrdom was heroically, borne. At

Z f~amatter of astonishment. This mainly ag-
ricultural community is the home of Hon. J.
S. Pike, cx—minister to Switzerland, and la-
tcr known to'our readersas along able cor-
respondent of the N. Y. Tribune. At this
point ive' had an excellent opportunity to
appreciate the terrors of “ a fire in the
woods.” We had seen at least a dozen rag-
ing in different directions while passing
through the Arristook woods, but those
were far away, and gave as little idea of
their awful grandeur or destructivcness.

This one, which had kept as from sleep the
night before by its having lighted up the
western; horizon for a length of six miles and
rising upward in solid columns of flatnc till
lost in the clouds, presented a grander sight
during the night than Vesuvius or Hccla

We had not
ridden more than three miles, before the
smoke and cinders became quite annoying-

flames, though about a mile and a half out-
side of the raging, tearing, roaring flames,
Here we were in full view of two dwellings
in the flames, and a score of others along
thecleared line. where the terror-stricken

occtipantswerepouring water over their

roofsand removmg their furniture while the

,_ wild sheets of flame came sweeping towards

them like some awful tornado. Even the
villaggrs of Pembroke were halfcrazed with
the fear‘that the flying embers Would cause
a. general eonflagI-ation of their town. We
”rode for two hours more or less oppressed
by the dense body of Smoke, which the

-' wind bewcver had, fortunately for us, waft-
, ed'above our heads, else we must have been

compelled to change our course. The terrif-

' ficxelocity..with which these fires have

 

spread through the Maine woods this sum-
mer is thus explained by the natives: Many

andindeedpiost of the pine mill, logs, out
last Winter, still lay drying on the ground

and I oozing out a resmous sap. All the
smaller limbs are left about and are now as
dry as tinder, while the larger litnbs are
split and piled into cord wood. Then there
was a terifiic and unprecedented tornado,
Iast'Septe‘mber, which swept the coast dist—
rict of Maine, and tore up and felled mil-
lions oi trees. These now being dead and
dry and covered with pitch, supply ready
combustion. With the‘ intense heat thus
supplied, the standing pines become an easy
prey to the devouring flames, inasmuch as
they are filled with turpentine gum. it has
since been estimated that, 2,000,000 ft. of
wood and lutnber were destroyed by this
single fire. We used plainly 'to see it at
night at Mt. Desert, a week afterwards,
at a distance of sixty miles. \Ve ,had a de-
lightful farmer‘s-wagon ride from Robins-
town down to Machias, passing through
Pembroke, a thriving town and headquar—
ters of the celebrated Pembroke Iron Works,
also Dennyville, where we dined on a forty
pound salmon caught the evening previous
not ten rods from the hotel. At Machias
We took the steamer Lewiston for Mt. De-
sert, the “jumping 011‘ place" of all Maine_
Her . islands, mountains, rocks, cold fresh
water streams and lakes do most abound in
wildest and most picturesque confusion,
and fish, fish, fish do more abound, we veri-
ly believe, than in any other quarter of the
globe. A full chapter must be devoted to
Mt. Desert, and so we bid you again adieu.
