The Water Works.

John Osborn, Esq., practical water engin-

eer, of New Haven, examined our sources
of supply 011 Thursday last, on invitation of
our local, board of commissioners.
accompanied by the President of the Fair
Haven Company, whose many years expe-
riences and contests in New Haven, have
certainly resulted in the acquirement of
much practical information. The Gibbs’
Bottom and Allan Betts’ Pond were first ex-
amined. Water in sutiicient quantity can
easily be secured at either of these points,
but the Bells water is impregnated with
swampy deposit, to such an extent that it
was at once rejected. The Gibbs water is
pure as well as abundant, but requires steam
pumps. But this constantly expensive mode
of supplying the town can be obviated by
boring an Artesian well, which is entirely
feasibl - and cheaper than the steam pump-
ing, while furnishing far more force. But
Silver Mine stream. furnishes every desira-
ble quality, except that its great distance
renders it a grave question as to cost. The
piping alone will use 11p more than half of
the Bonds now voted by the Borough.
if a fair and equitable arrangement can be
made with property owners along the line,
this stream will undoubtedly be taken; but
the distance, (six lniles,) and cost of bring-
lug down the mains, leave no margin for ex-
travagant settlements along the line, and
this exceedingly desirable stream must be
abandoned, if excessive and unjust indem-
nities he demanded. There is nearly a nat-
ural reservoirconstructed by nature on the
Osborn Farm, and the waters are cold spring
cmenalions of abundant quantity and unu-
sually pure quality tVCll now despite the
unprecedented drouth. The stream at this
point having its origin in a monster spring
011 the southwest margin of Ridgefield where
it bounds New York State, known as “ Sil-
ver Spring," and one other large and pure
spring originating among the southeasterly
hills of Poundridge, and both a little distant
from Vista, N. Y. As all the water experts
who have yet visited this source, affirm,
there is not probably in the entire State, a
supply to be found anywhere, so cold, pure
and abundant.

Firth—The alarm of fire was very quiet-
ly sounded on Thursday night, at about a
quarter past twelve o’clock. It was discov-
ered by Messrs. Sullivan and Cotter of the
night watch, who gave the alarm as best
they could in the absence of a proper alarm
bell, and also aroused Engineer Cotter and
Chici of Police Bartram. It proceeded from
the Fancy Goods store of D. D. Lockwood,
next to lIubbcll’s building, Main St.
volumes of smoke were seen issuing from
every crevxee, but the police very wisely
kept the store closed until the steamer was
got in readiness to play upon the confined

The Bridgeport Farmer this week makes
a full retraction of a scandalous local slan-
der, which appeared in its columns last
week. The story was as absurd as it was
wicked and untrue and the Farmer but does
itself credit in making a full retraction.

a popular Summer resort near New Haven,
was entirely destroyed by fire early on
Tuesday moming last. Loss $30000; in-
sured $18,000. Supposed to have been
incendiary.

Express office in this place, has returned to
his old love again after an absence of eleven

New STEAMBOAT.—L£tw1_‘cn9c & Eoulks
have laid the keel of a new steamboat,
about 180 feet long and 500 tons burthen,
intended for the Greenwich and Stamford
route, and owned by R. Cornell While. The
casters and boilers will be furnished by
Hubbard d: Whittaker, of Brooklyn. The
cylinder will be 48 inches in diameter, and
the length of strokc9 feet. The model is
designed somewhat after that of the Nelly
White—great speed and light draft being
the object sought afier. ‘i‘llc boat will be
completed in time for the opening of navi-
gation in the spring.
