A ten per cent. installment on the capital
stock, of the Railroad was due on Saturday
last.

EffMtn Abijah Betts, Wilton, was assault-
ed by two men on Saturday night, about 10
O’clock, as he was leaving his store, one of
whom struck him in the head with a stone.
Fortunately be was able to give the alarm,
and as neighbors came to his help the rogues
left for parts unknown. Their object was
und oub lcdl y robbery.
STAMFORD.
The Census Inan has not yet finished
Stamford, but the Advocate thinks the popu-
lation will be about 10,000, a gain Of nearly
3000 over 1860. Good for Stamford I
The contract for the mason work of the
Town House has been given to P. H. Brown,
Esq. The amottnt is $61,000. The carpen-
ter work has been coutractcd for by George
W. DeCunhe, of New York, for 31,000.
There will, of course, be various other mi-
nor. xpcnses connected with the building
Which will add several thousand dollars to
the total amount, but the cotnmittee confi-
(lcutly anticipate to be able to keep the fig-
ures within $100,000.
The trot Saturday afternoon was very
largely attended. Messrs. Allen Of Nor-
walk, and Ed. Jones of New Canaan, were
the owners of the competing hotses. Eight
seconds was allowed to Jones’s horse, who
won the race by that allowance. Mr. Al-
len’s horse made 2.43.
The Shippau Point hotel was lately in the
hands of the sheriff in consequence of some
misunderstanding between the owner and
the tenant.
On Tuesday morning, Mr. John C. Dow,
a cutter in the ctnpioy of Cook d: Lottns-
bury, was taken with the lockjaw, and died
on Wednesday. .
Stamford is to have a Skating Association.
Scely‘s Hall will be opened for this purpose
afternoon and evenings, commencing Mon-
day, Aug. 28. Circular roller skates will
be used.
As fully three-fourths of the manufactures
prepared at the Cove Mills were disposed
of in Germany, it may readily be seen that
the European war has very seriously affected
the business of this important establishment.
The works have been kept running so far
in hopes of some change in the position of
the belligerents which might open one Of
the German ports, but it appears useless to
expect the resumption of export business to
Germany, for months to come, at least. The
company anticipate with much regret the
closing of the works at an early date, and
this means not only a serious loss to them,
but a great misfortune to the four hundred
mechanics and laborers who have for years
received constant employment at the Cove
factory, and at the other mills owned by the
Stamford Manufhcturing Company.

GREENWICII.
About two O’clock a. m., on W'ednesday
morning, a tire broke out; in Shepard’s oil
mills on the Mianus River, below the lower
landing. The tire originated in the south-
east corner of the building, and before it
could be subdued, the whole southern por-
tion of the works, comprising sheds, store—
rooms, etc., were destroyed with most of
their contents.
The Second Congregational Church So-
ciety ltold their Sabbath ooi pic-nic on
Tuesday, Attgust 30. There will be a fair
and festival in this church on Wednesday.

madcby the Standard last week, it was
found that there was one hundred and thirty-
five new buildings in progress of erection

NEW CANAAN.
About fifty Good Templars, with their
feminine friends and relations, went down
to Rotou Point on Friday, and had a grand
good time.
On Thursday evening about 8 O’clock, a
lady in the New Canaan Hotel while en-
gaged at: a sewing machine, was startled by
a rifle or pistol ball crashing through 1hr
window right over her head. On inquiry it
was discovered that some boys‘ftring at a
cat had missed their mark, and seriously en—
dangered the life of an estimable lady.
Capt. Hoyt has lost ten sheep by dogs.
We hear of two gallant New Canaan gents
who amuse themselves on the beach at Nau-
tucket by helping lady bathers across the
surf. The young and good looking ladies
are carried in a very old fashioned arm chair
made by two masculine hands clasped un—
derneath and two across the back, while she
asau additional support, throws her arms
around the necks of the gentlemen, who de-
clare “it is a labor of love.” [Where is

ing Doctor whose lines are cast in such a

Rev. J. S. Hoyt started for his home in

School district No.1 have voted to engage
the services of Mr. Albert Seymour, for the

Roton Point is a favorite seaside resort for
our people from the “rural districts.”
A few days ago a Norwalk gent appeared
in the Registrar’s otlice, with a blooming
young widow of fifty—two ttpon his arm, de—
manding a license for their nuptial ceremo-
nies. The permit; being granted in due form
the loving and impatient cottplc marched
across the street to the cigar store of F. M.
Bliss, who with his business as a cigar deal-
er also enjoys the honors and emoluments of
the Office of Justice. Mr. Bliss, as soon as
he became aware of the Wishes of the couple
made them one according to law. The
bridegroom and his expectant partner, after
spending a few hours in the house Of a rela-
tive, departed for Norwaik in an open-wag-
on, and in the midst of a violent rain storm.
It is to be hoped that the realization of their
happy anticipations proved a suflicient re-
ward for their pluck and eudurance.—Era.,

give one of his Dramatic and Comic Read-
ings in the Towu Hall on Wednesday Eve-
ning 24th inst, under the auspices of Friend-

people detest, and are generally only evi-

Two “young ladies” in Randall county,
Ind., recently waylaid and soundly thrashed
a young man whO4—as they accidentally dis-
covered—was engaged to be married to both

Susan A. King, a memberof a New York
woman firm which has a capital of $1,000,-
000, in the wholesale tea trade, sailed from
San Francisco the other day on her way to
China. and Japan. .

at North Adams has worked so well that

more. The Springfieldgblican mentions
as a commentary on th Ignorant Crispin
cry about “taking the bread from our chil-
dren’s mouths to feed aliens,” that there are
now more laborers employed in the shoe
business in North Adams, exclusive of the
Chinese, than before the strike.

Masses. Ens—The injunction lately is-
sued by Judge Minor restraining the “Goose
Island bone boiling” Company from further
prosecution of their operations, seems to
have had nocti‘cct further titan to open their
eyes to the fact that the people on shore
were annoyed by it, and to stimulate them
ill renewed efforts to make themselves and
everybody else feel disagreeable. ,Perceiv-
iug no indication to heed the warning legal-
ly and timely given to shut up shop, the au-
thorities with apossc of “stalwarts” made
a desctnl, the other day, took possession of
the island—(this shows they are “sound on
the Goose,” or “Goose” on the “Sounc ,” as
you please,) and will continue to hold it, if
men enough can be raised in Saugatuck and
Norwalk to aid in the matter, until the
next session of the court, when their right
to proceed with the most “stinking" busi-
ness ever engaged in by man, ,will be inves-
tigated and determined. Meantime sull‘et-
tug humanity holds its nose in anxious ex-
pectation.
The store of E. A. Williams & Son was
forcibly entered on Monday night, 16th, and
goods to a small amount carried off. The
thieves entered by a rear window which
they succeeded in prying open, making
their movements in so stealthy a manner as
not to awaken persons sleeping near. Sus-
picion rests on a party whose dwelling
place is not a thousand miles off. Could
that party bttt be caught in the act, what a
satisfaction to tar and feather, cutand quar—
ter, or flay him alive. Be cautious, “experts,”
you may yet play your game one time too
many.
Very extensive, and we learn, quite ex-
pensive operations are'goingon at the Rail-
road Bridge at Saugatuck the pay of divers,
two in number, being $16.00 per day each.
The pier at, which they are at work was
built on piles in 1848. These piles have de-
cayed, allowing the bridge to settle, and for
two years it has been stayed up by means of
additional piles. The old masonry work
has now been entirely removed, and the di-
vers are excavating beneath the water‘s ‘sur—
face tor a firm foundation on the solid earth.
To see the modern appliances brought into
requisition to carry on this work, is well
worth a long journey.
NO signs of life having been exhibited by
the Saugaluck Valley fo.ks, for some time
past, it is reasonable to suppose their scheme
is dead, and “gone to that bourne from
whence no return by railroad can be vouch-
safed." Poor road, unable to “bear the
whips and seems of time,” the “pangs of de-
spised love,” the “insolvence of—ofllccrs,”
and “spurns that patient merit from the un-
worthy takes ;” unable to endure the ills lu-
liictcd, it has “flown to others that it knew
of," never “dreading that something alter
death,” it has, in a measure, “made its own
quictus,” and its originators have been tnadc
cowards by their Own consciences, and their
enterprise, which was thought to be of great
“pith and moment,” has been turned awry
and lost the name of action. “After life's
short and tittul fever, may it sleep well,"
and may “none of its sins be rememberet ."
The funeral of Mrs. J. Chapman Taylor,
whose death brought sorrow to many hearts
took place at the Conregational Church, the
Rev. llr. Ileitrich presiding, on Wednesday
last. ‘ .
During the past week nine young chil-
dren have died from various causes, and a
large number are now ill.
The weather has changed to an agreeable
coolness.
Last week we reported the Catholic Pic-
nic as having taken place at Mrs. Winslow’s
Grove, on the previous Friday. We were
mistaken. By reason of the dampness oc-
casioned by previous rains, it was deferred
until li’cdttesday, Aug. 17. at which time
the festivities were fully enjoyed.
News from the theatre of war is not en-
tirely satisfactory, although the New York
dailies essay to give startling accounts of
successes and defeats. It is evident, howev-
er, that engagements lately taking place,
have crippled both sides badly, and that the
French have had the worst of it. Since
King William came out with a proclamation
announcing that'thc war would not bcpros-
ccutcd for the acquisition of territory, the
sympathies of this country have leaned

Diet at New Haven, Monday the 15th inst.
Able speeches were made by Rev. Dr. Car-
mody, of New Haven; Rev. Father Mellon,
of Waterbury ; Rev. Father Mullholland, of
Fair Haven, and C. T. Driscoll, of New Ila-
ven. They all agreed in announcing to the
public that the meeting was called for no
other purpose than the cause of temperance.
Delegates were present from 28 local socie-
ties. A Constitution and By-Laws were
read, amended and adopted, for' the estab-
lishment ofa Catholic State Temperance
Union. The following persons were elected
permanent officers:
