The return game will come off in about three weeks at Red- ding. WEST Nonwamr.—The Ladies’ Christian Union announces a Fair and Supper for August 9th and 10th. On that occasion they will extenda warm welcome to all their friends from abroad. DANBURY. Rev. A. L. Frisbie, of the First Congrega- tional Church, preached his fifth annual ser- mon Sunday morning, and has now entered upon the sixth year of an acceptable pastor- ate. There is now but one clergyman in Danbury who was settled here five years ago, and he has resigned his charge. After five years’ delay, work has been re- sumed on the Northern Housatonic Rail- road between White Plains and Danbury, Ct. The contractors are Messrs. Stearns &. Clark. The line when completed will be 36 miles long, and its cost $3,300,000. It is to be completed before October, ’71. Two parties went to Roton this, Wednes- day morning, and another will go to-mor- row mornin g. Nathan Bulkley is to establish a city ex- press in this place next week, for the trans- imssxon about town of various packages. RIDGEFIELD. A horrible accident happened in this vil-~ lage on Tuesday morning. A blast had been set off in a piece of hard pan earth, on a portion of the new railroad near Harvey K. Smith’s residence. A part exploded, and it was thought the rest had failed, when the men started toward it. One of the party, John Kiting, reached it just as it exploded. A mass of dirt and powder struck him in the face and breast, inflicting terrible inju- ries, and, it is feared, depriving him of sight. Another man was struck in the side, and painfully wounded. Niram Dikeman, the well known hotel man, has contracted to feed 150 laborers on the White Plains Railroad, on the section near Bed-ford, N. Y., and is having shanlies put up for their accommodation. The introduction of the railroad has large- 1 increased the number of summer visitors. very available place is filled, and applica- tions have been refused. During this hot - spell'the great altitude of Ridgefield gives a bracing air. STAMFORD. The Water Company is out in an earnest and able appeal to the citizens of Stamford to come forward and subscribe to the capi- tal stock of the company. The capital stock is limited to $150,000, of which $50,- 000 is already subscribed ; they now want $30,000 more in subscription. The esti— mated cost to meet present demands is $110,000. The water they propose to ob- tain from Cox’s Pond, on Mill River, and has an elevation of 160 feet, giving a pres- sure of about 70 pounds to the square inch. It becomes our painfulduty as local jourc nalists to report the death of one of Stam- ford’s best known and lnost honored citizens, Captain William Skiddy, which took place on Monday last,‘al his late residence on At- lantic street. Now what is one of the most frightful characteristics of our present mode of doing business ? Is it not the building up of great fortunes out of colossal robberies? And the thing is done by a series of sensational ad- dresses to the cupidity of the cheated. Hi h interest notoriously goes with low se- curity; but we have, sit, in this country, a class of rogues who may be called the aris- tocracy of rascaldom, and who get rich by dazzling and astonishin others into the hope of getting rich. hey are the con- trivers of enterprises which propose to de- velop the wealth of the country, but which commonly turn out to be a little more than schemes to transfer wealth already realized from the pockets of the honest into those of the knavish. They are the financial foot. pads who lure Simple people into stock “ corners,” and then proceed to plunder them. They make money so rapidl , so easily, and in such a splendid sensational way, that they corrupt more persons by their example than they ruin by their knaveries. As compared with common rogues, they appear like Alexander or Caesar as compared with common thieves and cut- throats. As their wealth increases, our moral indignation at their method of ac- quiring it diminishes, and at last they steal so much that we come to look upon their fortunes as conquests rather than burglaries. Indeed, their operations on ’Change vie with those of milita commanders in the field, and are recorde with similar admiring mi nuteness of detail. They are the great sen- sations of the world of trade, and have, there- fore, more influence on the imagination of young men just starting inbusiness than the dull chronicles of the great movements of le itimate commerce. ow, sir, take the universal American desire to get rich, and combine it with the rapid; rascally way of getting rich now in vogue, and you will find you are breeding 'up a race of trading sharks and wolves, which will eventually devour us all. Brown’s Patent Wind Mills. We were mistaken, it was E. W. Mills’ patent. Mr. Cockroft has also been putting up one of the same class. The heated term commenced on June 11 and continued with but little interruption, for forty-six days, culminating on Tuesday morning last at' about 9 1-2 o’clock. Since, we have had some very comfortable weath- er. ‘ We learn that raspberries pay almost as well as strawberries, from the fact that the fruit yield continues longer. Owing to the drought, cats will be short and of much lighter weight than last year. It may not be generally known but there are over three hundred distinct varieties of birds flying among the forests and about trees near our houses. One day last week Mr. J. S. Jones, (Ed. Advertiser,) was overcome with heat, and for a time was in a critical condition. Ev- ery' effort to resuscitate him proved fruitless until we stopped in and prescribed some of his own medicine, by repeated trials in such cases proved to be a never failing remedy, viz : Soda water and Ice Cream in liberal quantities. Three glassesof the former, and four plates of the latter put him right on his feet again. Try it, ye afflicted. Day after to-morrow is the date set apart by the “heavy weights” to meet in council at Gregory’s Point. We shall be there, of course, and hope to see others who have suf- fered from empty stomachs with no pow- er to fill them. The thing can be gracefully done at that time between the hours of 12 and 4. “Clams,” “Clams,” “Clams I” Gold having advanced 8 per cent, it is laughable to hear some of the arguments ad- vanced by our merchantsin defence of their determination to secure a higher price for the very goods that were bought when gold was down. We will be satisfied if, at the next fall of gold, they fall proportionately with it. Every trade must live of course. Early Friday morning a fire broke out in the-barn oer. Henry McDonough, nearly opposite the Methodist Church, and before the engine could be brought to bear upon it it was, with its contents, entirely consumed. A large quantity of strawberry crates, tools, 850., were destroyed with the building. Loss estimated at $700—partially insured. Mr. M. is an enterprising, hard working young man, and the loss will fall heavily upon him. The fire was probably the work of an incen- diary. On Friday morning a portion of the stone work at the east end of the bridge, near the draw, caved in with a mighty crash. For- tunately no person or vehicle was passing at the time, and nobody was hurt. Travel will not be impeded, and the wall will so'on be repaired. _ ~ ~ The planking on the upper bridge has been repaired and is now all right. Haying and harvEst being over hundreds of people are daily going to the beach. As a system of recreation and enjoyment this cannot be beat—for it is sensible and cheap. The Third National Bank is nicely on- sconced in its new quarters for the transac- tion of business. The Cashier is made hap- py in apartments that contain the virtue of plenty of elbow room, with apppointments and furniture chastely designed and wrought in the latest style of the art. The new safe is one‘ot Valentine & Butler’s make, and burglars will have a sweet time in making an impression on it. “PAUL." Frees, of Ithaca, last week, solda two-year-old Hambletonian colt to Freder- sum of $1,500. We understand that Mr. John Keppy, the tailor, at 109 Water street. died Monday night from the effects of the heat. There are reports of several other deaths from the same cause. The Sedgwick Guard excursion to Dan- bury on Tuesday next promises to be a grand affair. Arrangements have been com- ~ pleted that will make this one of the pleas- antcst and most delight trips of the sea- son. The programme ludcs a dress pa- rade in the afternoon, at Danbury, an exhi- bit-ion drill and promenade concert, at Con- cert Hall, in the evening, and a stop for the night at the \Vooster House. The officers and members of the Guard, and the Wheeler & Wilson Band, which will accompany then on this occasion. have received an invitation to take breakfast at the Norwalk Hotel, where they will - stop one hour while on their way to Danbury. The steamer Bridgeport brought to this city, Tuesday, one of the smallest specimens of humanity, considering his age, we have ever seen. The young man alluded to goes by the name of Admiral Dot. ’He was born in San Francisco, is twelve years of age, twenty~five inches in hight, and weighs about fifteen pounds. Wilson Band are making arrangements for their second annual excur- sion to Central Park, New York, on or about the mm of August. About one hundred chickens were stolen from the premises of James Rogers, South avenue, Bridgeport, Friday night. Friday, a man entered one of the saloons on Water street, Bridgeport, and soon after fell asleep. When he awoke, his pocket book, containing some $15 in- cash, ,was missing. A female named Kate Carr was subsequently arrested on suspicion of ab- stracting it from his pocket, and a small portion of the money was recovered ‘ A fire occurred on Sunday afternoon about three o’clock, in the billiard saloon on Wall street, now kept by W. H. Connor, lately by C. C. Spooner. The fire origina- ted in the gas metre in the northwest corner of the room, and" burned the wood work and paper, considerably, before it was extin- guished. ‘ Mr. W. E. There are no sen- sational six-indland teams, and there is lack of hops and dress parties that form the at- tractions at Newport, but there seems to be no lack of enjoyment here, and the time passes very agreeably. Croquet, of course is fashionable, and I notice that the young people who all of evenings on the benches that line the Blufi's appear to be engaged in what at the mountains would be called flirt- ing, but which is here denominated blufiing.
