FAIRFIELD COUNTY ITEMS.
NEw CANAAN.—Dr. Monroe contemplates
spending a week or so with a friend in the
quiet little village of Siasconsettc, a pleas-
ant summer resort on the south coast of
Nantucket, where he can enjoy deep sea
fishing, bathing, cool sea breeze, 6.10., to his
heart's content.

DARIEN.
As we predicted in our last, the Fair at
the Darien Seminary, last week, was the lo-
cal “event of the season.” The ladies of the
Congregational Society, under whose auspi-
ces it was given, exerted themselves to ren-
der the entertainment pleasant to their
guests and creditable to themselves, and
they succeeded admirably. The assortment
of fancy articles displayed was large, attrac-
tive and really elegant; rare and beautiful
flowers graced the tables; the refreshments
were such as the ladies of this Society
know so well how to prepare, and Frank
Mead furnished the ice cream.
We have not time to particularizc in re-
gard to the Tableaux and other matters of
interest, which passed off so pleasantly, but
desire to mention the Readings of Miss Pot-
ter, one of the teachers connected with the
Seminary, which were received by the audi-
ence with many expressions of delight. We
hope to have an opportunisy of listening to
her in Norwalk.

STAMFORD.
Both the village hotels are doing s rush-
ing business this summer.
The work of excavating for the new iown
house seems to be pushed forward rapidly,
and about twenty-five laborers are busily
employed.

DANB URY.
The new Court of Common Pleas for
Fairfield county, Judge Brewster, will hold
its January, February, May and October
sessions at Danbury. All other months, ex-
cept July and August, when there are no
sessions, the court will be held at Bridge-
port.
The fares have been reduced on the Dan-
bury do Norwalk R. R., so that the fare bo~
tween Danbury and New York is now $3
for the round trip. .
A few days since a painter named An-
drew J. Post, at work painting Miss Dolly
Peter’s house on East Liberty street, broke
into a trunk during her absence, and rob-
bed it of $120 in greenbacks. Complaint
was made but too late to catch the rascal,
who, having secured a new suit of clothes
throughout, took leave for York Stae where
he married a girl and deserted her the next
day, since which time he has not been heard
rom.

BRIDGEPORT.
The body of the wife of Patrick Dolan of
East Bridgeport was found in the water at
Bridgeport, Monday. There was a slight
wound over the right eye, but it is not known
whether it was given before death or‘ after.
The woman left her home between eight or
nine o’clock Sunday night. A coroner’s
jury called it a case of accidental drowning.
At a meeting of the corporators of the
People’s Saving Bank, the following officers

The yachts Clarence and Fanchon left our
harbor Monday morning week with a party
of Bridgeport gentlemen on board, bound
on a cruise “down East” and a good time
generallv. The expedition is under com-
mand of Commodore Archibald McNeil,
and is divided as follows: yacht Clarence,
Commodore McNeil,,Frank M. Wilson, F.
Nickerson, T. L. Wahon, and F. 0. Lyon.
Yacht Fanchon, Capt. Henry Lambert, B.

The old land-marks are coming'down one
by one. The wood buildin on Beaver
street, next west of the Atlantic House, that
has stood for many years, and which was
called“ modern” in its architectural design
and- finish, when it was erected, is being de~
molished to make room for one more stately
in appearance.
At the annual meeting of the City Sav-
ings Bank of Bridgeport July 15th, the fol-
lowing persons were re-elected: President,

We learn that Rev. Y. Hincks, son of J.
W. Hincks, Bridgeport, has received a call
from the State street Congregational Church,
Portland, Me.
Mr. Adolphus Stirn, painter, fell from Mr.
R. McCoy’s new stable buildings this after-
noon, and was severely, if not fatally in-
jured. He was engaged in letterin when
the rope which supported the scafi‘o d, part-
ed, preclpltatin him to the‘ ground.
The Sedgwic Guard have voted to go on
an excursion to Danbury the first week in
August. The Guard will be accompanied
by the Wheeler & Wilson Band, which will
punish music for an evening concert.

Boston, Hartford and Erie Railroad, in
Boston, Friday, for the purpose of accept-
ing the amendment of the Charter recently
passed by our legislature authorizing the
issue of second mortgage bonds,a tempo-
rary injunction was served upon the compa-
ny restraining it from accepting the amend-
ment.

. to bring a fortune, who taxed the patience of
WESTPORT.
Mr. F. W. Fellows is about to put one of
A. P. Brown’s patent windmills on his place
for the purpose of supplying barn and house
with water. This invention, of which but
little is known about here, has achieved a
reputation which places it far beyond any
other windmill. It is so constructed that it
will head itself to the wind, is self-regula-
ting, presenting a s'urface according to the
force of the wind, and while it will do its
work with a very gentle 'brceze, it will
withstand the severest gales. It can be left
to work day and night without attention for
any length of time, its motion is steady, and
the mill may be started or stopped in a min-
ute. It is s. wonder that farmers and others
requiring a little motive power in their line
of business, have not thought of this admi-
rable plan of supplying it.
Since the current season commenced, we
have heard many complaints of the depre-
dations of that pest among small fruits, the
“slug,” a little animal or insect that bores
into the small shoots and destroys their
growth. Many remedies have been sugges-
ted, but none, in our opinion, is more effect-
ual than the following: Make a solution of
whale oil soap in the proportion of one
pound to five gallons of water; sprinkle it
over the leaves of the current bushes from
a. watering-pot with a fine rose. It carries
certain death to all vermin that it touches.
Try it.
The following will effectually prevent
flies from troubling horses : Take a few hand
fuls of walnut leaves and put them into a
small quantity of cold water. , Let thcm‘i
soaka few hours, and then boil fifteen min-
utes. Apply with a sponge. Wherever the
solution touches flies will never come. .
Those from Westport 'who attended Mr.
Gibson’s concert express themselves as
highly pleased.
Capt. John Perry, a native of Westport,
who went to the war with an Illinois regi-
ment, has returned, and is pursuing the
trade of mason. He is prepared to'do any-
thing in the line of cqncrete for buildings.
A late specimen of his handiwork is Chap-
man & Jellifi‘e’s mill dam.
Robert Snagg, Esq., is about to put up a
fine house on River street. One or two oth-
er parties are to follow.
That unfortunate son of Esculapius, who
has resided and practiced “physic” among
us for some time past, he whose horse
was sold at the town pump lately,—-who
owed everybody in town, owed bills amount-
ing in the aggregate to $800., and fearing to
meet his creditors, kept himself housed day
and night, you, had in his “chamber—lain”
for over three months—who claimed to be
in possession of a secret that was destined
his patients beyond endurance—suddenly
and without warning, abscouded bag and
baggage during the small hours of a recent
night. As a consequence interested parties
are squirming and many have asked the
question “where is he ?” but as yet have.
been unable to find out.
Several instances of reckless driving are
reported as taking place on Sunday last—
that hottest day of the year. Any man who
will abuse to horse in that way deserves
hanging.
An article on currants and virtue appear-
ed in the Southport Chronicle last week,
and somebody was hit by the remarks
made.‘ As usual, in such cases, the author
ship was charged to “Paul.”
John Taylor, Esq., of San Francisco, for-
merly of this place, was in town one day
last week.
D. A. Salmon & Co. have improved their
store front by removing those unsightly pil--
larsand adding bay windows.
Burglars attempted to enter B. W. Ma-
ple‘s residence on Thursday night last.
They were frightened away by a person
who happened to be about the house. What
a pity some of those scoundrels cannot be
caught. .
Nearly every time the draw is opened for
the passage of vessels, it is allowed to re-
main unclosed, sometimes half an hour,
greatly to the inconvenience ofthe public.
Can the Operation be stopped?
The planking on the upper bridge is in a
rapid state of decay. We noticed quite a
large and dangerous hole in it the other day.
If not repaired some horse or man may
break his leg.
As dog days approach flies increase. The
heat seems to increase also.
Josh Billings says he would rather be a
cowcumber thrown upon a pile of wood to
dry than to be an o.d bachelor.
Let dogs be muzzled after thc 20th.
The bank building is progressing slowly
and—, Congress has adjourned and every-
boby over here is glad of it.
A curiosity supposed to be Over 3000
years old was round on the rocks near
Christ Church one day last week.
The apathy exhibited in the matter of the
Saugatuck Valley R. R. but proves the truth
of our recent assertion that it was dead. '
The census man has been around. He
has thus far made a thorough canvass of the
town. We expect the oflicial statement of
population wil place us at about 4,500.
When the wind is northwest we don’t
care a cent for Goose Island, 'but when it
blows from the southeast, Oh my goodness,
what a—stink comes “thereup.” It has
been quiet in that direction for a. time, but
on Thursday last somebody again applied
the corkscrew to the assafoetada jug making
everybody sick at the stomach ever since.
Can’t we iclub together and “hound” on
those felsows down there ?
Saugatuck is a growing place, and the N.
Y. & N. H. R. R. runs near. Clams and
fish in the river. '
Tho “Gentlemen’s Library Associatioh,
(185 volumes) meet at Gregory’s Point for
the discussion of round clams and fish chow-
der, on August 4th. Like Gen. Grant, these
fat men never make speeches; but when
they are assembled, the beholder cannot but
say there is a good deal of inside material to
them. At the close of the day mentioned,
many of the “volumes” will no doubt re-
quire rc-binding. PAUL.

port, Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Spicer
were thrown from a carriage, in the ceme-
tery, and Mrs. Spicer was considerably in-
jured.
