, Uncle Sam’s Solvency.
It is no new thing for Uncle Sam to pa
his ,debts. He has always been in the habit
of doing it. The debt left by the Revolu-
tion was provided for in the Funding Act
of 1790. The aggregate amount, counting
in the foreign debt, the continental and
State loans, and the redemption of the cou-
tinental currency, was about $75,000,000
The young country throve so rapidly that
by 1812 the debt had been reduced to $45,-
000,000. In that year the war with Great
Britain broke 'out, and the debt in 1816
amounted to $127,000,000. In the next
eighteen years it was reduced to $6,000,000,
and the last penny of it was paid in 1835.
If we take into account the wealth of the
country, or, in other words, its ability to
pay, the debt which Mr. Boutwell is going
to fund is no heavier than the one which
Alexander Hamilton funded. It took twenty-
two years to reduce the latter debt by the
sum of $30,000,000. This Republican Ad-
ministration has reduced the. National in-
debtedness by between nineteen and one
hundred millions of dollars in thirteen

an indisputable physiological truth that if

spring, and were cherished in their desire to
take less food as the weathergrows warmer,
as they are yielded to in the autumn in
taking more, a very. large amount of the
diseases of spring and summer would be

llon of health and disease, yes, in multitudes
of cases a question of life and death, is
simply-this: as the winter passes, and the
balmy spring timecomes on, do nothing to
increase the appetite; -eat no more than is

less and. less every day. The very best way
lo increase your pleasure of eating is to

lated rooms, let your windows be raised
higher at night, and your inner doors be left
