Four Hundred Miles Up Stairs.
Reading about electricity, lightning and
the telegraph Ellie other day, said'Unc e Pe--
fer, “ reminde me of a curious story .I once
heard, when I was in England.” '
It seems there was a newspaper. in the
' city of Glasgow, in Scotland, which em-
ployed a London correspondent. The cor-
' . respondent madcit his duty .to gather the
news every day and send it to Glasgow
every night by telegraph. .
' He had made an a recment With an op-
erator at a certain 0 cc, by which his news
was sent to Glasgow at a reduction by the
ear. ‘ ~
y One night he arrived at the lower door, at
the foot of the stairs leading up into the tel-
egraph office; The door was locked, and he
could not open it.
The telegraph office was. way up to the
top of the building, in the Sixth story. The
operator had a bed there, to which he. re-
tired promptly at three o’clock, and it was
now halfipast two. _ ~
. The operator up stairs yawned and looked
at 'his watch. “Jenkins .. won’t come to-
' night, said he; I. may as‘well go to bed.
And there was poor Jenkins all. the time
pounding away oaths door at the foot of
the long stairsunpb'le 'to get-in. _
“ Hillo! up there! he cried, looking at
the window ,of'the .tele 'ph office that
glowed with light. “ Hi] 0 i'Jonesl Some-
body has-locked the outside door, and I“
can’t get in.”
“ What’s the
ing'along. _ _. .
“ I’m lockedgput,” said Jenkins. “ Here
I’ve got a batch of the most important news
for a paper, a murder, three fires and a
riot-sand the door locked in my. face, and I
can’t get in. What will I do i” . ~
So the policeman began banging the door,
but Jones, the operator, .up in his office was
as unconcious of the tumult as if it had been
in the moon. He was whistling to himself
and awning prodigiously.
“ hy don’t you go to some other office!
asked the policeman. _
“ NO authority to use any other line,” said
the correspondent. “ Ah 1 I’ve got it I" he
added, and before the policeman could . ask
him what it was, the excited Jenkins had
dashed off down the street as, if a mad dog
was after him. ,
Jenkins rushed'breathlessly into another
tele raph office, six blocks off.
“ say,” said he to the operator, “ I’m in
a fix I” Got news to go off inside of _ an
hour, and the stupid operator at my ofllce
has gone to sleep, and I can’t get iu—and—
and’ — .
“ Well, that is a fix.
“ Tell you what I want," said Jenkins, en-
deavoring to catch his breath, “ I want you
to telegraph down to_Glasgow, and wk the
operator there to telegraph up here tclloncs,
and bid him come down stairs and let me'
in i” ,
The operator roared with laughter at
this, but went to his instrument and began
rattling away at a great rate.
This is the message he sent— ~
“ Glasgow. Wake up Jones, Station X;
tell him Jenkins at the foot of the stairs
can’t get in}! . '
, Jones was looking 7 at his watch again,
and concluded that he had better put out the
lights and go to his little bedroom across the
hallway, when clatter went his instrument.
“ There’s Glasgow calling me,” said Jones,
agd hurried to his instrument and ticked

“ What’s wanting 1’"
Back came the answer.
“ Jenkins down stairs—door fast—go let
him in.” ~
Off went Jones with avrush down stairs——
threw open the door—and at last the anx-
row ?1’ said a policeman com-
ious Jenkins got up and sent off his 'news.’
So‘ you see how a man sent.a message
through a solid door, and up four pair of p
stairs, four hundred miles around, and by
way of Glasgow, and all within twenty
minutes. .

The followin is given .by an old staff
officer of Gen‘. homas’s exact language on
the subject of the Presidency, when ap-
proached with reference to anomination:
“No, gentlemen; I desire that you should
do nothing‘ in that direction, for I should
‘ not accept a'nomination for the Presidency
if offered me, and I wish my friends to un-
derstand it, and not think of me in connec-
tion with that office. My mind is fully
made up on that point. I have learned the
trade ofa soldier, and whatever success 'I
have had has come from my sticking to my
trade, and I am now too old to learn anoth-
er. Besides I have too much regard for
my country to be willing that it should run
that risk.”
The following anecdote is told by Dr.
Ray Palmer: A Western mother, who, by
the way; is‘well known as an autlioress,
told him that her son 'whom she had ad-
ised to join the church, had. a difficulty.
‘I don’t see, mother, the merit of Christ’s
dying for us. If I could save a dozen men
by dying for them, I think I would ; much
more if there were million ofthem." “But,
my son, would you die for a dozen grass-
hoppers ?“ That set him thinking. After
a few days he came to her with his doubts
cleared. “1 don’t know about grasshop-
pers; they are a pretty clever kind of bug.
But if it was millions‘of mosquitoes, I think
I should let them die I”

editing the Indogéndent, and from $6,000 to
$8,000 for the intcr’s lectures. This is
nearly as much as Mr. Rum gets for edit-
ing the daily Tribune.

emy, is the most‘absent-minded man in
France. The other da , on his way to lec-
ture, he fancied he ha ‘lost his watch, and
took the very watch out of his pocket to
see if he had time to step back and get it. .
