A MOONLIT RIVER.

I lacked, when the moon was shining bright,
From my own sweotbower, on the river;
I watched, in the soft and silvery light,
The glittering birch leaves quiver.
Above me, far in the heavenly plain,
The stars were faintly shining,
Like the golden links of the endless chain
That my fancy has been twining.
The river glided into sight,
Forth from the tangled wildwood.
As indistinct in the dusky night,
As the memories of my childhood.
And the present time seemed imaged there
Where the moon's Soft light was brightest:
Where the ripples lit with the beam so fair,
Aild the shadows fell the lightest.
Then darkly the current hastened on,—
For the waters linger never,—
Till the last bright gleam in the shade was gone,
And the forest hid the river.
'Twas like the future, all undefined.
All dlln and vague, uncertain,
Till the light of the present bath on it shined,
When time both removed the curtain.
We cannot tell by what path the stream
May seek the ocean billow,
Whether it flows through a peaceful scene,
O'erhung by the elm and willow,
Whence the shepherd comes to water his flock,
Through summer blossoms roaming,
Or whether it dashes against the rock,
All white with its angry foaming.

But we know at last to the surging sch
Flows on that moonlit river,
As time flows into eternity «
And leses itself forever.
We know that each day is hearing as on
More near to that boundless ocean,
And oh,lnay we, when our time is gone,

A Party of Clnclnnatlans Call on Mrs.
Stowe at her Florida Plantation.
About twelve o’clock a party‘ of about
thirty ladies and gentlemen took an excur-
sion on a small steamboat twelve or fifteen
. miles up the St. John’s. After we had been
some time out the captain informed us that
Mrs. Harriet Beecher Stowe’s plantation lay
immediately on the bank of the river, and
that the old lady .had arrived there but a
few days previous for her usual winter so-
journ. It was then determined that the ex-
cursionists would call on her, and when the
boat arrived opposite her residences. com-
miiiec of Cincinnati gentlemen called at the.
house to learn whether it would he agrees-
ble for us to pay our respects to, her. She
informed the committee that she would be
pleased to receive the ladies and gentlemen
of the excursion. Accordingly all marched
up to the house and were presented to Mrs. .
Stowe. We were very much disappointed
in her appearance. She is scarcely up to
the medium hight, and has strong, masculine
features, but greatly lacking in the intelliJ
gencé she has dis layed in her contributions
to the literature of the day. ‘
Were she placed in a room with a number
of ladies selected promiscuonsly, there is
scarcely one in a hundred who would select
her as a woman of genius. She appeared
diflident and ill at ease in the company of
our ladies. Wheihcr she was embarrassed
and forgot, or whether it is characteristic of
her, she certainly exhibited none of the bes-
pitality with which a lady in the South re-
ceives visitors. She left the ladies of our
party to get seats as best they could, did not
introduce them to her daughters, who were
present, nor did she offer them a cup of
water nor an orange, which hung in. profu-
sion on the trees around her door. Her
daughters, twin sisters, had nothing to say;
indeed, we believe they did not speak to one
of the visitors. One of them was engagefi
on a piece of crochet work, and she plied
herself to the work before her, as though
she were a hired seamstress who had no
right to speak. This conduct attracted the
, attention of both ladies and gentlemen of
the party, and it was suggested in extenua-
tion of their want of hospitality, that, being
the family of a distinguished authoress, they
were perhaps subj ectcd to visits from a great
many curious and impertinent people, and
that they had adopted this method to rid
themselves of both beers and bores.
One of our party, a mischievous, fun-
loving disciple of Blackstone,from Atlanta,
states that while one portion of the party
were interviewing “ the old woman” on
the veranda fronting the river, and others
were viewing the oranges as they hung
temptingly on the trees on either side of the
house, he made his way to the kitchen to
interview the servants. He encountered a
rather pretty and witty Irish girl, from
whom he learned a good deal in regard to
the domestic habits of the Stowe family.
In response to an inquiry, she stated that
Mrs. Stowe’s twin daughters were thirty
years old, and that they did not want to
marry. Our Atlanta friend said he thought
as much, from their behavior.
Mrs. Stowe looks to be sixty-five years
old, though under fifty-eight, having been
born lune 15, .1812. She wears her hair,
which is quite gray, in curls, and was dressed
in very plain, unpretending style. She was
married in 1836 to the Rev. Professor Calvin
Ellis Stowe. ,
It was learned from the gentleman who
has charge of the place that Mrs. Stowe
owns about ninety acres of land, on which
there is a small orange grove. He stated
that the trees yield from two thousand to
three thousand oranges each, and that they
sell for five to eight dollars pcr‘barrel, aver-
aging two hnndred and fifty to three hun-
dred oranges per barrel. The demand for
oranges is not so» good as formerly, and
prices are lower. It was noticed that Mrs.
Stowe’s oranges were not so large as those
on an adjoining place; but perhaps the
larger ones had been gathered and marketed.
A few minutes before the party returned
to the boat, Professor Stowe made. his ap-
pearance, and was introduced to a few who
still lingered at the house- He is a venera-
ble, patriarchial looking man, and made
rather a favorable impression upon those
who conversed with him. Mrs. Stowe stated
that she would return to her New England
'home in May. Her residence on the St.
John’s is an unpretending, but neat cottage,
and it is claimed to have been built upon
the spot where the first dwelling was erected
in Florida. It may be historic ground, as
the French attempted to make settlements
in Florida as early as 1539, but were subse-
quently driven out by the Spaniards, who
founded the first permanent colony at St.
Augustine about 1560.
CR'ows AND MEN—Aside from the special
question of profit and loss, we have a warm
side toward the crow. He is much like our-
selves. _He.is lazy, and that is human. He
takes advantage of those weaker than him-
self, and that is manlike. He is sly, and
hides for to morrow what he cannot eat to-
day, showing a real human providence. He
learns tricks much faster than he does useful
things, showing a true boy nature. He
thinks his own color the best, and loves to
hear his own voice, which are eminent traits
of humanity. He will never work when
he can get another to work for him—a gen-
uine human trait. He eats whatever he can
get his claws upon, and is less mischievous
With a belly full than when hungry, and
that is like man. He is at war with all liv-
Ing things except his own kind, and with
them when he has nothing else to do. No
wonder men despise crows, They are too
much like men. Take off his wings and put
him in brooches, and crows make fair, aver-
age men. Give men wings, and reduce their
smartness a little, and many of them would
be almost good enough to be crows.

he knew that such currency would not pass
even in hell without good endorsem.

presses the opinion in Blackwood that in Eng-

Cure for small-Pox and Scarlet
Fever.
We have been requested to publishth
following receipt for preventing or cum}
small-pox and scarlet fever, which is 5m
to constitute a remedy or cure for these
“as unfailing as fate.” It is perfectly harm-
less when taken by a well person: The
most scientific School of nicdlcme in the
world—that of Paris—published fills. re-
ceipt at. panacea for smell-pox, but it is
equally effective in curin scarlet fever.
Our authority says : “Here Is the receipt as
Ihave used it, and cured my children oi
scarlet fever; here it is 'as I have used it to
cure the small—pox. When the learned
physicians said the patient must die, it
cured: ‘Sulphate of zinc, one gram: fox~
glove (digitalis) ,one grain ; half a teaspoon-
ful sugar, mix. with two iablespoonfuls of
water. When thoroughly mixed, add four
ounces 'of water. Take a spoonful every
hour. Either disease will disappear in
twelve hours. For a child smaller doses,
according to agc.’—If counties would com-
pel their physicians to use this, there would
be no need of peslhouses. - If you value ad-
vice and experience, use this receipt for
these terrible diseases.”
AMERICAN vs. FOREIGN CARPnTs.—The
, United States commissioners at the Paris
exposition in 1867 report: “American car-
Eets are fully equal, if not superior, to the
nglish carpets of similar grades. .The
American retail purchaser is invariably
compelled to pay a higher price for a for-
eign carpet of the same grade. The Amer-
ican ingrain carpet, which is much more
largely consumed, is. unquestionably .su-
perior to the English.” Of carpets we Im-
ported last year to the value of $3,004,691
ufactnrer of carpets told us that, very often,
when purchasers came for carpets, he
wdnld place in his sales-room English and
American carpets side by side, and the
dealers would frequently select the domes-
tic for the foreign, because they were the
better carpets. Consumers are not aware
of the large quantity of goods made at
home, which are sold as foreign manufac-
ture—N. Y. Tribune.
