WESTPORT.
On Tuesday evening last, Miss E. Annie
Ilinniaa, a “Trance Speaker,” so called, on-
tertained an audience in Betts’ Hall 011 the
subject of Spiritualism. Being the first lec-
ture Of the kind publicly delivered since the
days of nicsuierisni, many attended, and the
fair orator was listened to with attention.
Unlike mediums of the past, this individual
w as able, unaided, to place herself into the
nicsmcrie or trance state. With closed eyes:
her lesson, committed to memory of course,
for the oceasion,.was delivered in a style
that'wouldhave done credit to ti. Webster.
lIcr r'cniarks‘werc pregnant with brilliant
ideas relative to the poWer which she and
other mediums possessed to communicate
with spirits of the departed, were 'clothed
in elegant language, and at their close,
several questions pertinent to the subject
wereaskcd and answered,but in no case was
the power of communication demonstrated
to any satisfactory degree.
Just before “ comz'ng_to herself,” the bear-
crt were informed that they had been list-
(ning to the celebrated Dr. Charming. Many
intelligent citizens attended this lecture, but
we are happy to say, did so more'for the
sake of being amused than from belief in
the foolish doctrines of this, one of the
grandest humbugs of the 19th century.
The 7th Annual Soiree of the Misses
Downes took place on Wednesday eve last,
per announcement. at the “Church of the
Final Restoration,” which was packed with
a large and enthusiastic audience. The- ex-
ercises were interesting and occupied some
four hours. Space will not admit of going
into details, but among those making spe-
cially creditable performances,may be men-
tioned Miss S. V. Downes who executed one
of Beethoven’s Sonatas in C sharp, minor;
Mrs. Lizzie Wilkins, Warren’s DonQuixote;
Miss J. Marvin, Vincent Wallace’s Vesper
Hymn; Miss Julie Hill, Pattison’s Twilight
Mazourka, and Miss J. S. Downs‘Oesten's
Agathefi-all Piano Solos.
During the evening, the principal Miss E.
Downes, who, by the way, has a better
knowledge of the theory and art of vocal-
izing with the least ostentation iu‘the dis-
play of it, than any one about here, sung,
by request, a charming Italian Song which
was encored. From those present we learn
that all the .scholars acquitted themselves
well, and showed evidences of thorough
training. The Misses Downes are entitled
to credit for these results. '
DARIEN.
Mr. Vincent Colyer is to deliver a lecture
descriptive of his experiences among the
Indians of Alaska. and the Great West, in
the Congregational Church, on Wednesday
evening, April 6th, at 7% o’clock. Mr. Col-‘
ycris a very agreeable speaker, and his lec-
.turc isbrim full of. information. Go and
hear him. -

DANBURY. '
The large dry goods establishment of N.
‘:P. Gillette & Co., was burglariously entered
Monday night. The thieves effected an en-
trance at the front of the store, having
pressed open the store door, which alone
was fastened, the inner door unlocked. The
silks, about $1,000 worth, were kept under
a counter in the rear Of the store,- and "the
entire lot was taken. Nothing else is missed
from the place, although it is evident the
burglars continued their search beyond this
counter.
On the same night, an attempt was made
to rob Scofleld, Starr & Co’s., dry goods
store. That they entered the store was in-
dic tied the next morning, by the marks of .
their feet on a counter and a pile of cloth,
'but why they should have withdrawn with-
-out taking any goods is difficult to explain.

friends, at the residence of her son, on ed-
iicsday evening of last week. There were
Sixteen ladies present, whose united ages

Thursday April 7th at 1 o’clock. _
_ A valuable horse belonging to E. S. Davis,
.Esq., died on Tuesday night, from the effects,
.as is supposed of severe driving and expo-
sure, on Sunday.
Eli Weed, an elderly man residing in the
Boggs district, met with an accident, Sunday.
He was endeavoring to make a shelter for
ins cows from the storm, when he was
knocked down by them, and in' the fall
he broke one of his arms. ‘
Danbury has twice as much 'ice as it had
last year. . ‘
Postmaster Brown of Danbury isrrecov-
ering from a severe affliction in his eyes,
which threatened at one time to destroy
his sight. .
Thomas Hcfl'i'on of Danbury assaulted
his wife with a hatchet last Wednesday,
and inflicted several ugly wounds in her
head. The wife refused to appear against
liim_and he was allowed to go free.
It orkmen have nearly completed the re-
modeling of the shirt facto building, and
work will be resumed this hursday, a very
acceptable move to the employees—Mm.

The Town House committee have accept-
-ed a plan from which to build the new
Hull, and intend to hurry the work.

__On Saturday evening, the Grand Army
Of the Republic closed one of the most suc-
cessful engagements ever held in this city,
at Franklin Hall. The play presented was
entitled "The Drummer Boy ;” or the Bat-
tle field of Shiloh. The Hall was crowded
to overflowing,- each of the six evenings,
and at the matinee on Saturday afternoon ;
and many regretted that the engagement
could not be continued another week.
As Mr. Robert E. Sproul of 79 State
street, was coming home from Providence,
in the Owl train,’ on the New 'York and
New Haven Railroad, about half past three
o’clock, this morning, he smelled smoke,
and upon turning around, discovered that
the wood box near the stove was on fire.
There were from twenty five to thirty pas-
:sengcrs in the car, all Of whom were asleep.
He immediately gave an alarm, the train'
was stopped the fire was extinguished.—
Except for Mr. Spronl’s presence Of mind,
it might have been a very serious affair.
The twonew bridges over the street, con-
necting the new portion of the Howe Ma-
chine Co’s factory with the older buildings,
are completed, and present a fine appear-
.ance.

under sail. Capt. Kennedy of the Brussels,

'full set of sails, but needed no assistance.

The remaining forty miles yet unfinished
of the‘ Midland railroad has been let to
V. Simpson do Co.,contractors, who have
arranged with the Chinese government for
1,000 laborers. The are .to be sent over
immediately via. the uez canal. Each man
is to receive $10 a month and rations,
which at present prices will cost about $9
a month. The contractors have given bonds
to furnish them employment for five years
at the same rate, 26 days will constitute a
month and twelve hours a day.

that when a man pawns his wife’s wedding
ring for whisky, he’s getting so he cant be
trusted.
