ICE.—In an article on the “ Ice Crop
Hcreab‘outs,” the Troy flmshas the fellow-
mg:—
“ The crop
gathered last car was about
the average. ’ round num crs it amount-
cd to thirty thousand tons, which were
gathered at a cost Of about twenty—five cents
per ton. Of this thirty thousand tons at
least one-half was lost y melting, leavin
fifteen thousand tons harvested at an actua
cost of $7,500 to supply the city. This year
the regular dealers are, of the opinion that
the , will not secure more than twenty tho u-
sa tons which will be of poOrer quality
than usual—the blocks being smaller -aud
thinner. The cost of gathering this amount
will be from seventy cents to one dollar per
ton; and.tho_dealers generally assert that
they will havevto double last season’s prices
in order to save themselves fi'om loss. The
of their ice-houses has yielded but a ve
little ice. This has obliged them to haul It
from other points, at considerable distances
from. their store-houses, putting them to tile
expense of double help. To counterbalance
this condition of affair-gs great deal of ice
has been cut and stacked Inthis vicinity on
speculation. Many persons who arc usual]
.idlefdt this season have gone ,into the busi-
fiéflwnd, are cutting ice on the Mohawk,
the cana],,an_d on nearly every other run-
ning stream in the neighborhood. At least
twenty thousand tons will be gathered b
these speculators, who went into the bus -
' ness with: the idea that the supp] would be
short, and thathigh prices woul rule. The
amount harvestedby them added to that
obtained b the regular dealers makes the
total lar e y in in excess of the usual quan~
tity, an consequently the idea of extreme-
ly high prices is to ,a certain extent falla-
cious, though doubtless the irregular dealers
will be we] repaid for their labor during
the Winter. In Cohoes the dealers have
onlyabout halfth‘eir‘usua] supp] , and un-
der no‘circum'staIlCes'will they 'be able to
harvest a full crop.
Our down theriver neighbors ' ro'miso' to
have a~full supply of ice, althoug the Hud-
son has not turn shed its usual amount. A
fair and close estimate of the quantity of '
ice taken at‘all .points from the Hudson
river is 200,000 tons, which is 1,200,000 tons
short of the amount of last year. Houses
built to hold fi'om 20,000 to 100,000 tons
have stored this season, so far, but from
5,000 to 115,000 tons, and some of them are
empty But what the Hudson did not do
for these housesthis season is now remedied
from other, sources. Two companies at
Barrytown are employing a train often ears
ing ice at the rate of three hundred tons a
day from Barrytown cove. This is clear-
water ice twelve or thirteen inches thick.
The Livia ton and West Camp ice-houses
arefi ling 'y men who now work at night
as by day. Ten thousand tons have been
stored at Catskill. The knickerbocker Coin-
.pany, Bra'n'dO‘w’s‘Reach, near Catskill, are
storing about 2,000 tons of seven inch ice
everyday. ~, At Athens, men ‘1 horses are
bringing ice from, Green’s lake, five miles
distant. The cooperative Company at- Stock-
port have stored 3,000 tons , and will get
2,000 tons more. A New York company
opposite Stu esant have secured about
80,000 tons, an _
getting out’s‘even-inch‘ ice now. The Knick
erboeker. Company at Castleton have housed
.800 tons of eight and nine inch ice, and have
sent men, machineryaudhorses to a lake
on the line’ of the Albanyand Boston road,
between Richmond and Shaker stations,
where they expect to stack 250,000 tons of
iota-around whichflheywil] build a house.
This company also em loy six men in ice
cuttin at Coxsackie. . he Man attan Com-
pany, as contracted with afirm in Sarato-
gafor $50,000 worth of ice, which is now
form; on at the rate of one hundred car
oads daily, twelve tons to the car. The
Marlborough Ice Company has a large gun
atwork,‘ and-rcceivcs between three an
four hundred tons per day. A New York
firm made an offer for Senator Morgan's ice,
on his lake attPoughkee ie, failed ,to com-
plete the contract, and a oughkecpsie'com-
pany has offered fifty cents a load for the ice,
at'the lake. The quantity is estimated at
00,000 tons, and is represented to be “splen-
did ice, six inches thick.” There is an ice
fever, now epidemic, all along- the Hudson;
laborers are getting $1.75 a day for cutting.

mond to the celebrated White Sulphur Springs of

miles above Cincinnati, and 350 miles below Plt'ts-_

The details of' the Loan have been arranged with
special reference to the wants of all classes of invest-
ors, and combine the various features of convenience,
safety, and protection against loss or fraud.
The Bonds are In denominations of

The Bonds may be registered in the name of aha

pondents in specifying the class of Bonds desired.
They have thirty years to run from January 15,
1870, with Interest at six per cent; per annum from

Line of Road from Richmond to the Ohio River, with

A Sinking Fund of $100,000 per annum is provided
for the redemption of the Bonds, to take effect one
year after the completion of the Road.
The mortgage is for 815,000,000, of which 82,009,000
will be reserved and held in trust for the redemption
of outstanding Boudapf the Virginia Cnntral Raft;
road Company, now merged in thaChcsapesk: and
Ohio. .
