Dwight Stocking, Esq., sailed from New
York on Wednesday morning, for Mexico

safe return.
An intelligent and moral Wiltonite ad-
vises his acquaintances not to attend the sur-
prises, as he thinks them made up of Intidels
and unbelievers, “Where ignorance is bliss

Three interesting young men of Wilton
attended a Donation last Wednesday night
at Silver Mine. There was a goodly num-
ber present and the pastor, the Rev. Mr.
Stevens, was made the recipient of a re-
spectable amount of “Wherewithal.” A
. bountiful repast was spread, which the three
hungry youths attacked with their custom;
ary vigor and success.~ They desire to re-
turn thanks to the married ladies present
for courtesies and attention shown them.

Rev. E. P. Roe, of West Point, gave a
very entertaining lecture to an apprecia-
tive audience, in the Congregational Church
on Wednesday evening last. His subject
was “The Romance of Cavalry Life," the
style in which entertainments are usu-
ally given at the place mentioned, feel safe
in saying that everybody had a good time.
A lecture on Missionary travels, observa-
tions and experiences in China, will be de-
livered in the Saugatuck M. E. church, on
Wednesday evening, 23d inst, by Rev. W.
D. Thompson. PAUL.

David Olmstcad of New Cangan recently
gave his little girl bed bug person by mis-

GREENWICH.
The new bridge at Cos Cob, is finally
completed, ahd the steel rails laid. The
foot—bridge will not be put up just yet.
Mr. S. Clark has sold to Mr. Chas. H. Mil-
ler, a small house and_lot at North Cos Cob
on the Stanwich road, for about $300.
It is said that Mr. William Voorhis has
sold the lot on Greenwich avenue, near
Held’s market, 55 feet front by 100 feet deep
for over $2,000, Messrs. G. and J. Ray being
the purchasers. This is at the rate of $15,-
000 to $20,000 per acre. Mrs. Robert Tal-
take instead of worm medicine, and she diet!
bott paid Mr. J. D. Elliott $3,000 for his
Main street house and lot, and Mr. H. W. R.
Hoyt from $4,000 to $4,500 for his Green-
wich a'venue dwelling house.
The selectmen advertise for scaled pro-
posals for the blasting and grading of the

gatnck Vally R. R. Stock have been very

Mr. George Beckwith met with a serious
accident on Saturday evening. He was de-
cending second flight of stairs in the Sturde-
vant Building about half-past six o’clock,
when he fill to the bottom of the stairs, and
was taken up in a partially insensible con-

nights previous, assured us of fine sport in
the line of skating. But alas! the fallacy
of human hopes. Scarcely had we uttered
the words of cheer, than things went back
to the old notch, and since, we have endured
a repetition of the warm and muggy tem-
' perature witnessed through the entire win-
ter. Early last week, when the ice as we
thought, had attained proper thickness, we
resolved, while there was a :chance, to try
our “hand”'or rather our “ feet” at skating.
It was towards the close of day when we
ventured “forth,” or rather “first” on the
ice. The sun had been shining brightly,
causing the ice to show indications of re-
turning to its “ parent” state, inasmuch as it
had already become “ pappy” in many
places. The fine day had attracted a large
number of people of both sexes. The wo~
men assembled were very ff Men”-y.
Not exactly a beginner, still, we were un-
used to the operation of skating, and as a
consequence'experieuced quite a number of
tumbles before we got to “understand”
our skates, or rather, before we got them to
“ understand” its. ' If we undertookjto “over-
come” the difllculty, we were sure to “come
over" in payment for our trouble. Discour-
aged in attempts at cutting pigeon-wings
making “ pirouettes,” we were juSt on the
point of putting a “ stop” to our “goings-
on,” when, we went a little too far, ventured
upon a thin place in the ice, and—“ got
in” for it. Considering the frigidity of the
water, we took the matter extremely “ cool,”
and take credit to ourselves for “ undergo-
ing” our “ going under" heroically, with no
inconvenience save that of a good wetting.
The lecture on “ Self-made Men,” by the
great H. G. on Thursday evening last, was
greeted by a full house, and listened to
with marked attention. An improvement
in the personal appearance of the speaker
was noted. Contrary to expectation, we
did not discover the inevitable “ pantaloon
in boot,” and “knot' of cravat under ear,”
usually seen when Horace presents himself
before the people; but instead, a well-dressed
gentleman of the “ Old School,” whose use
of classic language, and nice method of put-
ting things, would scarcely indicatc that he
himself was a “ Self-made Man,” but rather
one who had graduated with all the honors
at some institution.
