Having had, from the 10th of December,
1800, to about the last fl January, 1870, a
“ spoil ” of weather more like the first of
April than the heart of winter, we are
tempted to produce sOme old records, to
show if this singular winter has any prece-
dent—and also to indicate the character of
all the winters from 1789-90 down to 1831
-32. It will interest One rather numerous
class of our readers. Apparently the pres-
out winter is unsurpassed. The first table
was furnished on the 8th of January to . the
New York Herald bya Newburg corres-I
pondent, and refers chiefly to the closing of
.10 Hudson river—for they did not keep
thermometers in those days.‘ It will be ob-

for Mr. Stanton’s seat on the Supreme Court
bench. is a native of this state. He was
born in 1808, in Somers, Tolland county.
His father, the Rev. William L. Strong, was
pastor of the Congregational church in that
place for twenty-five years. William grad-
noted at Yale College in 1828, taught an
academy in East Windsor and in Tolland a
year to caeh, pursuing meanwhile the study
of his profession. He was admitted to the
bar in this state but afterwards removed to
Reading, Pennsylvania. ‘»
