We are inclined to regard these as to a
great extentauthorilative statements. of the
sentiments of the Catholic leaders on the
school question. Whether the great masses
of Catholics in this country, whose children
enjoy an education at the public schools bet-
terthan they can hope to receive in any
sectarian or private institutions, will take
exactly the same views of it that the leaders
do, we somewhat doubt. But be that as it
.mayuthepubhc- school system, essentially
as it is, free to all children, poor and rich,
the great hope of the i'cpublic,.must be sds-
rained. The deference to any well founded
‘mligious’ .scruples, we are ready, for our
part, tomakc our schools simply secular,
but havrug done that, having come to that
common standing ground, we have nothing
more to yield. It seems, as 'we' feared, that
it is not enough. Well, there We stand, not
as Protesta‘ntswotas-seclariaus at any sort,
but as‘unbigoted friends of the education of

No class of diseases to which the human flesh is
heir, so secretly and surely areal sway the life blood
of the victim and hurry as many poor mortals to an
untimely grave as do these afi‘ectlons of the kidneys
and uriiiaiy organs—none so stealthily undermine
nealth—uone render existence such a burden.
yet. unhappily, so greatly does our mode of life, our
manners and our customs predispose these delicate
organs of our body to disease, that no class or condi-
tion of people ate exempt from their destructive in-
fluence. Indeed so prevalent are they among people
of 1118 present thy. that scarcely a man or woman
can be found whose kidneys and attendant organs
are in a perfectly sound and healthy condition. By
recent statistics it is found that nearly two-thirds ol
all the deaths occurring in the United States can he
clearly traced to some one or other of the diseases
of this class, and to swell this ratio there are bun-
dreds dying everyday, who, thro h a lamentable
feeling of raise modesty, fail to me e known.—eveu
unto a physician—the nature of the complaint which
sooner or later ends in their death. Unfortunately
these diseases begin so slowly and imperceptibly that
the unconscious victim rarely detects their presence
until they attain such an aggravated degree as to be
utterly beyond relief by the ordinary modes of treat-
ment. They often exist for years without the least
knowledge oftheir presence. The patientls at length
awakened to the fact. that his strength Is radually
falling, and that he is becoming pale and so low, and
teels weak and disinclined to make the least exertion. ,
Perhaps his suspicions are aroused by slittle putlhtsss ,
under the eyes—a slight swelling of the ankles 'st
night—unusally frequent calls to void urine—short-
ness of breath—or heat over the kidneys. In other '
cases these premonltory symptoms are altogether
wanting, or, as is often the case, they pass by unheed-
ed. The fatal disorganization of the ldneys silently
proceeds, and suddenly, amid apparent health, there’s
comes convulsions, delerium, unconsciousness and
violent inflammation, which seldom fail to carry off
the patient. Sometimes the disease lles concealed
for an unknown period and then reveals themselves
after ex cause to cold and wet or a tit of Intonation,
and ago it, it steels on stealthily in the wake ofsoms
pre-exlstlng chronic disorders, such as consumption,
scroiula, constitutional syphilis, etc. The manner or
death from their effects are various. “ Sometimes
after the acute symptoms have subsided the disease
takes on a lingering form and the sufferer passes
peaceably awagccxhausted from anemia, burdensome
drops and dc tive digestion of food. More fre-
