l , Nantucket “Now and Then.”
The Nantucket Inquirer and Mirror of
llth ult., has an interesting article entitled
Now and then,” which- contains many
anions and interesting statements in regard
b the history of this famous town and its
lihabitants. Probably iio town in this
lommonweaith has had such a varied ex-
terience. as the one just mentioned.
‘ At the close of the revolutionary we",
a 1783, the number of its' inhabitants was
nduallv increased until in 1840, when
hey numbered some 9,900 souls. At that
line the town stood third in commercial iiii-
vortauce in the Commonwealth, having
bout 103 ships engaged in ' the who? fish-
ry, and some 70 vessels engaged in the
casting trade.
The partial failure of the whale fishery,
ad the discovery of gold in California,
aused alargc emigration from the Island,
ad in 1855 there were but but few able-

reeks at home after absccnces from three
[five years. _ _ .
At the present tune the population of the
island is onlv 4,300 or about the some num-
ber asui the close. of the revolution. Of
this number, 013 are over sixty years of age,
422 are over seventy, 101 are OVCl‘ eighty,
and 6 are over ninety. .
Previous to the revolutionary war Nan-
tucket had seven ships and lungs sailing
regularly to London._ The Bomb family
were among the principal merchants of the
town—and Joseph Rotch, the founder of
the family in this country, settled at Nan.

ships to England, France. Spain, etc.
Francis Rotch, a son of Joseph, went to
En land in one of his own ships in 17:73,

Captain Timothy Folgcr, who commanded
one of the London packets from Nantucket,
was associated with John Hancock in sever-

tance from business connections seems to
have ripened into strong friendship. 'A
grand-daughter has in her possession a pic-
ture of Governor Hancock, painted by
Copley, which was presented by the Gov-
ernor to Captain Folgcr as a mark of cs-
teem. Thefirst sperm whale taken in the
Pacific Ocean, so far as known, was killed
by Captain Archclus Hammond, of. Nan—
tucket, in 1786;01f the coast of Chili, m a
ship sailing from London. In 1820 the
coast of Japan was first visited by whale-
men .

The goose that laid the. golden egg has
perhaps been discovered in California; at
least it is recorded in 0. Sacramento paper
that among the contents of the gizzard of a
oosc, killed for the purpose of furnishing a
hanksgiving dinner to a family in Folsom,
were found several specimens of virgin
gold of the aggregate value of eight dollars.
A thirteen year old boy attempted to
steal it ride on a car at Portclicster, but fell
off and liadliotlilegs so badly crushed that
he died.
It is proposed to cut to cut‘ihrough Hull-
ct’s Point, oil'- Hcll Gate, about the head of
Long Island Sound, so as to make a sort of
ship canal there. The Secretary of War is
directed by a resolution in the House to
make estimates of the expenses, SEC.
The fact that Jenny Lind can no longer
sing as she could once, is reasonably ac-
counted for by the statement that her little
daughter has “inherited her mother,s voice."
They call the State Entomoligist in Illi-
nois, “Bugmaster-Geneml.” He has collect-
ed more than thirty thousand bugs and it is
feared, as well as surmised, that he intends
toopen a hotel in Chicago. ‘
