Death of Rev. 8. G. 00c.
Rev. Samuel G. Coc, for thirteen years
pastor of a Congregational Church In Dan-
bury, Conn., and for 'the seven years pre-
ceding in Middlebury, Vt, died after 's. lin-
gering illness, in this city, at the residence
of his sister, Mrs. Chauncey Goodrich, on
the 7th of the present month. He was born
in New Hartford, Oneida county, New 1 ork,
Oct. 22nd, 1819, the third son of Rev. Noah
and Elizabeth Goodrich Coe. His vener-
able father is still among us, one Of our old-
est citizens. Mr. Coe graduated at Yale 1n
1888, studied law in the Yale law School,
and commenced practice in Berlin, Conn,
but soon having entered upon a religious
life, decided to exchange the legal profess-
ion for the ministry, and after two years in
the Yale Theological Seminary, settled as
pastor, first in Middlebury, Vt, and then in
Danbury, Conu., leaving the latter place 1a
1864, in consequence of impaired health.
He subsequently supplied the pulpit 1n
Ridgefield, Conn, down to the last year
when he came to this city for rest and med-
ical advice. After spending the winter here,
he preached, with great acceptance, during
the past summer, at Cleveland, Ohio, but
while returning East, was stricken, at
Yonkers, N. Y., with pralysis, and after be-
ing brought to this city, gradually sunk un-
der the disease with which he had so long
suffered—Bright’s disease.
Mr. Coe leaves a widow, a married daugh-
ter and two sons, the eldest a recent grad-
uate of Yale. He was married in 1844 to
Miss Grace J. Hawley, of Ridgefield.
As a preacher he was able and earnest, as
a pastor eminently judicious, faifthful and
sympathiziug, and in all relations greatly
respected and beloved by his people. llis
ministry in his several fields was abundant-
ly successful. He was a conscietious work-
er, and never spared himself in his Master’s
service. Many warm friends will deeply
sympathize with the afflicted mourners.
