' COLLEGE.
The truth is soon likely to be discovered
with regard to the stone image recently dug
up in Onondaga c‘ounty. ‘P'rof. O. C. Marsh
the distinguished paleontologist of Yale
College, gives the first direct blow to the
alleged antiquity ofthe imige'lin the follow-
ing letter, which appears in the Buffalo
Courier: ' .
“ROCHESTER, November 24, 186?.
“ I saw the “Cardiff Giant” last evening,
and in accordance with your request I Will
tell you what I think of it, although I can
now only give you my conclusrons. The
reasons for them would make a longer let-
ter than at present I have time to write. _
“ By especial permission of the proprie-
tors I was allowed to make a more careful
ex ination of the statue than is permitted
to t visitors, and a few minutes sufficed
to satisfy me that my first suspicions iii re-
gard to it were correct, namel :.that it is
of recent origin, and a most ccided hum-
bug.
“ The figure is cut from a block of gyp.
sum, similar to that found in Onondaga
county and at other localities of the Salina
formation in the state further west.
“ The peculiar position of the body and
limbs, which has occasioned so much re-
mark, was apparent]. determined in a
. great measure by the cm of the block of
stone, which was water-worn on at least
three sides of the head and on the
limbs and feet, and have erroneously been
regarded as indicating for the work a high
antiquity.

are nearly as distinct and fresh as when
first cut. ' In several places they are very
near or immediately surrounded by the

“ Now, gypsum is soluble in about four
hundred parts water, a very.short exposure
of the statue in that locality at Cardifi‘
would suffice to obliterate all traces of
tool-marks, and also roughen the polished
surfaces, but these are both quite perfect,
and hence the giant naust havedbeen very

any scientific observers should not have at
once detected the unmistakable evidences
against its antiquity.”

interesting particulars in the Bristol News in
regard to the Siamese Twrns, who are new
on exhibition at the Virginia State Agricul-
tural Society : . . ,
Their sirname is Bunker, and then: given
names Chang and Eng. They reside a1-
ternatcly at two residences, one at Mount
Airy, N. C. and the other three miles dis-
taut in the country, one of the'wives taking
charge or each establishment. They mar:
ried twin sisters near here not many years
since, and each has a family of beautiful
black-eyed children of brunette complex-
ion. They are aged fifty-seven, are quite
grayohaired, and while they are in independ-
ent ci-cuuistances, they are not wealthy;
Their wives are large, healthy-looking wo-
men, aud their country house, the only one
we have seen, is built of logs with puncheon
floor and without finish or decoration.
They use at Windsor chair of double Widt ,
and a bed not less than eight feet wide. A
rustic flight of steps of double width leads
to the attic, and they pass up and down
them without difficulty. 0n the occasion of
our visit there wasa four inch snow on the
round, and as they were out gunning, we
ed to await theirreturn. When they made
their appearance they were walking very
briskly, and soon they were engaged in a
spirited run. On oneof their inside shoul-
ders they carried a double-barreled shot gun,
and were in fine humor. They were ex-
ceedingly pleasant and hospitable in their
manner, and insisted upon a second visit
from us.
