A correspondent,,who has sufi‘ered from frequent
literary thefts, asks us to print the following, writ.

. A Noble Worker.
A correspondent of the Christian Intellr‘gsw
csr writes of a man who was led into a Sun-
day School by his little daughter, and there
learned to read:
Stephen Parson, the Sunday-school veto-
ran of Illinois, is now resting somewhat from ‘
his labors, in charge of the depository of the
American-Sunday-School Union in St. Lou-
is; but we found him with force unabated,
ready to speak and work for the Master.
Many incidents of striking interest, drawn
from his accounts of pioneer work, which
crowd upon the memory, must be passed
over. But we cannot withhold this repro-
duction of a recent occurrence:
“ A gentleman came to my office not long
since, and said: ‘ Mr. Paxson, I wish to ask
you a question, and hope you will take no ,
odence at it.’ ‘ NO offence at all,‘sir; ask
whatever you please, and I will do as I
choose about answering it.’ ‘ Well, Mr.
Paxson, some of the people in the East are
a little suspicious of the report that‘you have
organized thirteen hundred new Sabbath-
Schools, with misty-thousand scholars, and re-
quested me to examine into the matter.
Have you any proof of it, that you will per-
mit me to examine ?' ‘ Yes, sir; here are
my books containing the name of each
school, with its superintendent, post-oflice
address, number ' of scholars, ctc., set down
on the very day in which it was organized,
for I never left such things over night. Ex-
amine them to your heart’s content; and
you will find duplicates of these records sent
from time to time, as they were filled up, at
Godfrey, 111., and the Sunday-School Union
Rooms, in Philadelphia.’ ‘Ah, yes, sir; I
see there can be no mistake in the matter;
the records are complete, and shall take
pleasure in acquainting my friends with the
facts. Good-by, sir.’ ”
W The following story will be read-just
now with general interest :——“ During the
memorable battle near Atlanta, on the 23d
Of July, in which our troops fought first
from one side of their fortifications and then
on the other, a rebel officer at the head of
his men, more daring than his followers,
succeeded in getting close up against the
Union works, when a certain stalwart colo-
nel of Iowa volunteers, begrimed with the
smoke of battle, leaped from the narrow
parapet, and extending his powerful arms,
grasped the gallant rebel by the collar,
hoisted him bodily into the Union lines, and
sent him to the rear a prisoner of war. The
rebel, who turned out to be Colonel Lam-
pley, of the Forty-flab Alabama, died a few
weeks afterward of chagrin at the ingiorious
way in which he was captured. The captor
was Colonel Belknap, of the Fifteenth Iowa,
_ now Secretary of War."
WHAT Fowns To KER—The choice of
breeds is so much a matter of fancy, that
one can hardly advise another about them
without a long dissertation. Brahmas are
good layers, setters, and mothers, and are
great favorites; heavy fowls, active, but will
not fly; flesh good; Light Brahmas are not
very expensive; dark, are quite 50. White
Leghorns are persistent layers, do not set,
fly like pigeons; very pretty, nice, economi-
cal fowls. Of French fowls, select Houdans,
which are good sized, speckled, homely
fowls, persistent layers, and hardy; excel-
lent for the table. If you must beeconomio
cal, buy two trios of the breed you prefer,
and a lot of common fowls, selecting light-
colored, largo bodied, feather-legged pullets;
next spring save the eggs from your pure
pullets, and you will stock your yard with
forty or fifty fowls with little expense.
Should you wish a breed of more fancy
fowls, you have your choice amohg Polands .

great layers; Cochins, which are not supe-
rim to Brahmas; Black Spanish which lay ;
