On Thursday night Bailey’s store was en-
tered by burglars and robbed of some $40 in
pennies, the. An attempt was also made to
enter E. II. Smith’s store, by boring holes
through the pannels, but did not prove sue
useful. I
WESTPORT.
The Annual Town Meeting and election
of oflicers, took place on Monday last, but
owing to a severe storm, was not as large]!
attended as it otherwise would have been
and resulted in the polling of a ligt vote.
.By the union of a portion of the Democrats
with the Republicans, coming before the
people in the shape of a “Citizens Ticket”
the regular Democratic candidates were de-
feated. We regret to state, however, that
two Democratic Registrars of Voters were
elected, thus securing the entire control of
certain matters, which heretofore have been
managed by a representative from each par-
~.t_y. At the business meeting, several impor-
tant measures were adopted. Among which
may be mentioned, the Distinctions to con-
stables to act as police oflicers, and arrest .
all peace-breakers, drunkards and disorder-
ly persons, without warrant; and the in-
structions to Selectmen to provide a suitable
look—up for said vagants. Let these be faith- _
- litilly carried out, and our peace and quiet-
:ness on Saturday nights and Sundays will
lie less frequently disturbed.
'W’c congratulate the town on listening to a
concise and-most able report of the condi-
tion of our public Schools, delivered by the
Rev. J. K. Williams, acting School visitor.
{700 copies of this report are to be published
and. furnished to the legal voters. A union
of the various school districts is hopefully
looked for within the next two years.
In making a choice of Town officers this
year, it was gratifying to notice a marked
abatement in the .bitter political hostility
and strife heretofore witnessed. This is as
it should be. In matters of this kind the
best man fer the place, without regard to pol-
ities, should be the rule.
The rate of tax laid upon the property of
the town for the ensuing year, is 8-10ths of
one per cent, and will raise about $18,000.
Wednesday the 13th is a day looked for-
ward to with pleasure by all lovers of Round
Clams, or any kind of shell fish. On that
day if pleasant, the “ Great Green’s Farms
Clam Bake” in kes place, and we know of
more than a. thousand who have signified
their‘ intention of being present. It is
strange, but we do declare that the smell of
roasting clams tends to draw a bigger crowd
tthan anything else. - _
With well filled stomachs, and everybody
in good humor, gentlemen will remember
the important Railroad meeting to take place
at Reading Ridge on Thursday, 14th. Citi-
zens ? it is desirable that the Saugatuck Val—
ley R. R. be built. lVe are already well on
with the subscription list, but we want $20,-
000 more before we can organize a company.
A company will positively be formed when

«commenced at an early date. Be counselled
therefore—give this matter serious atten-
tiou, do not allow the horse race at Bridge-
port on Tuesday, or the Clam Baking at the

But once in our memory, extending over
a period of thirty years can we refer to a

the horse discovered his dange r, and, while
in the act of turning round to regain the
shore, was caught in the frightful current
became entangled in the wheels or harness,
and the whole establishment was carried
down stream with great velocity. The ve-
hicle was entirely annihilated, the horse
drowned, and the driver subjected to a well
deserved wetting.
On Saturday last, while Nathaniel Kirk
was engaged at a circular saw, some portion
of the machinery needed adjusting. This
he attempted to do without: first putting the
saw out of gear. 'While beneath the frame,
lie-inadvertently raised himsef, bringing his
back in contact with the sharp teeth of the
saw, which made horrid havoc with his
flesh and bones, making gushes that baffle
all description. He received-proper surgical
attention, but his condition at present is a
.Critical one.

STAMFORD.
We learn from the Advocate that at the
annual town meeting on Monday 4th inst, '
it was nianimousiy voted to appropriate a
sum not exceeding$10,000 for the purpose of
building a new poor house, which is order-
ed to be built under the direction of the
sclectmeu.
A tax of eight mills on the dollar was laid
for the ensuing year. This is two mills less
than that of last year, and is thought to be
sufficient to pay all ordinary expenses be-
sides building the ncw poor house.
A burglar entered the house of Chas. De
Forrest, on Henry street, Monday night, but
was frightened off by the screams of a young
lady whom he had awakened.
Geo. L. Edwards, a graduate of the Wes—
leyanUniversity,has received and accepted a
call to become the pastor of a church near
J amesport, Long Island.
W. W'. Studwell is preparing a frame for
the new Methodist meeting house at Ban-
all.
g 266 orders have been drawn on the Town
Treasurer, the past year by the selectmen,
the total amount of which were $50,313.04.
The Board of School Visitors estimated the
cost of the schools of the town for ordinary
incidental expenses during the coming year,
at $11,800.—Ad-vocate. '
BRIDCEPORT.
Two ladies called at the police headquar-
ters this forenoon and reported that they
had their pockets picked at the depot. They
came down on the morning train from Wa-
terbury, and while waiting for the New York
train they were relieved of their money
purses, one containing $16, and the other
$11. The purses contained their tickets
from Bridgeoort to New York, and all the
money they had with them.
The damage to the Housatonic railroad
by the late storm is being rapidly repaired.
Trains run from Bridgeport to Sheffield,
Mass, and from that place passengers are
conveyed by teams to Great Barrington to
take the train north. From Sheffield to
Barrington, a distance of six miles, the road
is almost a complete wreck, two bridges be—
ing gone and about tliree’hundrcd feet of the
embankment washed away. _
- A steam sugar refinery has been establish-
ed in Commercial street, East Bridgeport.
A man named David Davis was seriously
hurt on the head last week by the fallin ofa
heav piece of plaster. He belongs in al~
ton, ova Scotia, and was employed in dis-
charging a cargo of plaster from the schoon-
er “Mort‘ord & Trubee,” of that place. '

Mr. George Richardson has been elected
Superintendent of the Bridgeport Hydraulic
company to fill the vacancy caused by the
resignation of Mr. H. Edwards.
The wife of John Banks of Bridgeport
was seriously if not fatally injured on Wed-
nesday by a tree fallinar upon her which was
blown down by the ga e.
John Farrell started from Kent the other
day to go to New York to meet some friends
from his mother country, but unfortunately
he stopped in Bridgeport where he got drunk
pitched into a man named O’Donnell and
got thrashed, and was taken before the po-
lice court and fined $7 and costs. After this
experience he concluded to return to Kent
and stay there.
On Saturday afternoon at the auction sale
of real estate the double house on Broa'd st.,
next north of the stone building on the cor-
nc'r of Liberty, was sold to Mr. Frod’k Sailer
for $7,176. The frame house next west of
the stone house sold for $3,875, to Mr. J. H.
Nelson, and the stone house ,on the corner
of Broad and Liberty, was bid ofi‘tor $6,750
by Mr. Nichols Northrop. The brick build-
iilg corner of State and Water streets, in-
cluding three stores, fronting on W ater
street, was disposed of for $10,100 Mr. P.
Lesser being the purchaser.

What is . Catarrh ?
[As described by Dr. Rowe]
In its first stages Catarrh resembles a severe cold,
so much so that many imagine that they are suffering
from a constant cold. The general feeling is some-
times that of uneasiness, heat and stiffness of the
nostrils, which are often closed on one or both Sides;
a dischar c from the head of white, green, yellow, or
green an yellow, and at times tinged with blood,
which falls into the throat. and has to be hawked up,
producing a constant desire to swallow and clear the
thrdat; dull, heavy pain over the forehead and be-
tween thc shoulders, top of the head hot, falling out
of the hair, fullness of the temples, dizziness. sore
throat, offensive breath, impaired memory, defective
smell, sometimes entirely lost, bad taste in the morn-
ing, coated tongue, nervousness, constipation of the
bowels difficulty of breathing, pain in the lungs,
noises 11 the ears, drowsiness.
These are the principal symptoms of Catarrb.
Some have all and others part of them. When the
throat becomes afi'ected it should not be neglected any
longer, as it is on its way to the lungs. Dr. Rowe’s
treatment thoroughly eradicatcs it.

A daughter of Mr. Benjamin F. Arcularius, who
resides in Portland Avenue, sixth door from Fulton
Avenue, Brooklyn, has been cured of cutari-h by Dr.
Rowe, of No. 42 East 20th Street, this city, after all
others had failed. '
Deafness and Discharge of the Ear
cured.
A son of Mr. J. P. Cake, of Portchublic. Atlantic
00.. New Jersey. who has been deaf for sixteen years
with discharges from the ear and cotarrh, causcd~by
scarlet fever, has been entirely restored to his health
by Dr. Rowe. The case is an extraordinary one, inas-
much as the young man was fourteen months old
when attacked with scarlet fever, and before com-
mencing to use Dr. Rowe’s remedies was as deaf as
not to be able to hear, unless spoken to in avcryloud
tone of voice. Latterly the cataer had affected his
head so as to prevent him from studying. N ow he
can hour as well as only one, and has commenced his
