FAIRFIELD COUNTY ITEMS.
GREENWICH.
At a meeting of Co. E. Sth Reg’t C. N. G.,
Lieut. Edwin Lyon was unanimously elected
Captain ez‘ce Rundle. The present Lieut-
Col., and a former Major were once Captains
of this Company which has always held a
high position in the regiment for drill and
discipline.
‘ WESTPORT.
Massns. EDITons,—For pbout two weeks
we have been ill, confined a portion of the
time to our room, unable to attend to our
own interests, or the interests of the Gazette.
Our recovery proceeds slowly.
A meeting of persons favorable to the in-
terests of the Saugatuck Valley Rail Road,
will be held at Redding Ridge, on Thursday,
Oct. 14th,at 2 o’clock P. M., and will be ad-
dressed by the Hon. Wm. D. Bishop. The
people of Westport, accompanied by a band
of music, are expected to turn out strong on
the occasion, demonstrating to the residents
“.uoay‘ up there," that we are moving in ear-
nest “way down here.” Other meetings will
follow in rapid succession. Stock subscripfi
tions to this road exceed $80,000.
Everybody knows we hada terrible wind
and rain storm on Sunday, 26th, and a tre-
nlendous rain on the 2d,'but can anybody
tell whether the well~springs Were effected
thereby? Our Newtown Pippins were
blown off by the bushel, and other light
damage done. The 'fine drenching which
the earth received more than compensated
for all.
We learn that the Rector of the Memo-
rial church of the Holy Trinity has com-
menced an action against Charles J. Ketch-
um for the assault made on him, while sitting
in his carriage, one day last week, laying
the damages at $100,000; and, that Morris
Ketchum,-Esq., is bondsman for that sum.
On Tuesday last,'as a son of PatrickGartl
, land was playing on the Baiiroad draw-
bridge, at Saugatuck, he fell through on to a
pile of rocks. beneath, sustaining a Serious
fracture of the left arm, a scalp wound and
some severe bruises. Mr. Chas. J. Ketchum
who was near by, fishing for suckers, heard
the boy scream, and hastened to his assis-
tance.
That “Great Clam Bake” to be given un-
der the auspices .of the Congregational So-
ciety of Greensfarms, on. Wednesday, Oct.
13111, is expected to be the grandest affair of
its kind ever enjoyed in this vicinity. We
. learn that tables will be spread, under the
t:nt of the Fairfield Co. Agricultural Socie—
t_;-', for the accommodation of 1,500 persons,
and that Round Clams, Long Clams, 0y-
sters,Fish and Sweet Potatoes will be dis-
pensed in quantity to suit all. The f-ct that
Mr. Sanford Sholes, of Gregory’s Point, will
superintend the “Bake'f, is ample guarantee
of its success. The public generally are in-
vital. I
On investigation it is shown that 'the man
McElroy who was found in a dying condi-
tion, lying on the highway between Nor-
walk and Westport a? few days ago, and who
has since died, did not meet with the mishap
through drunkenness, but by an attack of
dizziness of the head to which he was sub-
ject. It-is gratifyinglto know that over $300
has been subscribed for the family of deceas-
ed, who were left in indigent circumstances.
In a recent communication, we inadvert-
ently referred to Mr. Charles Gorham's horse
(Lady Refton) as being 14 years of age. We
have since learned our mistake and hasten to
correct it by putting her down at 17% years
old—sound and kind.
On Friday evening last, as Bradley Hull,
Esq., was crossing the Westport drawbridge
the rear wheel of his carriage caught one of
the rods attached to the draw frame, upset-
ting the vehicle, and throwingIo'ut and injur-
ing severely two of the occupants—.Mrs. A.
Wheeler and a Mrs. Gray, The injured par-
ties were conveyed to Gray's hotel and were
. properly attended to by Drs. Bonton and
Robert. -
Summer has passed and gone, and. al-
though a few of her beauties linger, we can-
not but feel thatwe are now witnessing the
decay of the year. A few days more," and
we must exelaim \ -

The saddest of the year,
Of weeping winds and wailinc woods,
And meadows brown and sore."

BRIDGEPORT.
They have had a lively time with eels
again, in Bridgeport. They are as numer-
ous in the City Water Works reservoir as
life insurance agents in the streets, and as
determined to bore their way where they
are not wanted. The main water pipe burst
in one otthe streets recently, and over one
hundred eels came out at the break. _They
have stepped up the pipes, preventing the
water from running, and thus have. stopped.
whole manufactories for hours, and even de-
layed a-railroad train an hour and a half
and the Steamboat, for want of water. On
Tuesday morning over two hundred, some
ver lar c, were caught. ‘ ,
'lhe tandard says :—We kept count of
the number of eels which were caught Tues-
day, as the reports came in, until the sum of
about 800 was reached, when we shut down.
The bare mention of the same was too much
for our stomach. - .
The Sedgwick Guards have elected St.

Rev. Dr, Chopin and several temperance
friends from New York, had a cold water
jollification‘ at Mr. Barnum’s seaside resi-
dence Tuesda . On of the guests says that
jolly wine-bib ers would have been aston-
ished had they heard the mats of laughter
which went up from the festive board for two
hours, where the strongest liquid imbibed
was coffee and “Adams Ale."
Gen. Dwight Morris, late Consul of Havre,
has purchased g,“ Lindencroft,” Bamum’s
recent residence on Fairfield Avenue.
The Crossley Carpet Company received a
new engine last week from the foundry of
Messrs. Woodrufi‘ &. Beach, Hartford. The
engine is eighty horse power, with flywheel
twenty-two inch face, and fourteen feet in
' diameter.‘
A patent has been granted to Martin V.
Hill of Bridgeport, for a cartridge loading
machine—Standard. ,
STAMFORD.
Sunday Evening services have been re-
sumed at the Universalist church.
The work of opening the lower canal for
the passage of steamboats and vessels is be-
ing pushed forward rapidl . A large force
of men are constantly emp oyed, and though
the work is more formidable than the gene-
ral public has. any idea of, it is surely up
preaching a successful conclusion. The
, dredging machine is daily and hourly lifting
.hugc masses of mud from the bottom and.
sides of the canal. This is received b im-
mense iron buckets which restlupon a schw ’
which is hoisted by steam into. railroad
tracks, and carried thence to'be distributed-
over the low grounds in the vicinity Of the
canal. A substantial stone dock is already
built. In the finished portions of the canal
there is six feet of water at low tide Unusual
. difficulty has been experienced in the chan-
nel near Pine Island, where the bottom was
found so rocky that an expensive apparatus
had to be em loyed to drill and blast the
‘ rocks out. W en this is done, the heaviest
part of the work will be over. A railroad
has been laid from the new dock to the New
' York and New Haven and New Canaan
Railroad de ots. .
Robert airchild is completing two iof
Hall’s patent electric signal stations, one to
be placed at the railroad crossing at the
‘foot of Noroton Hill, ' and the other at the
crossing on the Shippan road. ~ - ~ ‘

Town Election;
A heavy storm has prevailed nearly all
day, and the vote will probably be very
light. In N orwalk a citizens ticket was
run in place of the democratic, composed
of popular republican names, mixed up with
democrats. Scratching was so largely in-
dulged in, that the result could not be ascer-
tained until 9 o’clock, p. m., when it was
found that the Republican ticket was elect-
ed by a majority of some 80. At South
Norwalk the. mixed ticket, strange to say,
